PROJECT DETAILS
Microstrain Ltd has just recently completed another stormwater management project utilising
the StormTech attenuation system. The project was based in Telford, Shropshire; the client
Doubrava had appointed Gary Gabriel Associates as the structural and civil design engineers
and Balfour Beatty was the main civil contractor.
The original specified attenuation system was changed in favour of the StormTech stormwater
management system. The client realised the need to have a stormwater management system
which met certain criteria, namely a system which has a design life in excess of 70 years, meets
long term live and dead loading standards recommended by the British Board of Agrement (BS
8006) and has a sustainable approach in its manufacture and the treatment of the stormwater
before final discharge.
The client was also looking for a system which could be easily maintained. The final use of the
project was a dry mortar plant so the accumulation of silts in the attenuation system from construction
traffic was deemed a future problem. StormTech’s unique isolator row solves this
problem, removing the silts from the stormwater, protecting both the downstream catchment
and the integrity of the structure’s holding volume. The ease of maintenance also insured significant
future cost savings for the client.
The civil engineer contractor Balfour Beatty quickly realised that the StormTech system was the
most cost effective approach to meeting the attenuation requirements for the project. The original
design required a storage volume of almost 550m 3 split into two tanks with an excavation
dig of almost 3m from cover level to tank base. The Balfour Beatty team understood the Storm-
Tech system’s ability to take HGV loading at 300mm cover and asked Microstrain to put together
a design and costing proposal. The Microstrain design team guarantee a design and costing
proposal within 3 working days of receipt of construction drawings.
The proposed StormTech design gave instant savings on groundwork’s by raising the designed
tanks by almost 1m depth. The contractor was satisfied due to the quick and easy installation of
the product, competitive pricing and attentive on-site supervision by a Microstrain engineer.
The Balfour Beatty team was also pleased with Microstrain’s ability to accommodate the fluidity
of the construction program they were required to keep. A delivery of all the attenuation
tanks components was made within two weeks of the order been placed which greatly helped
the contractor’s program.
