About Jay Gee Melwani Group
A privately-held company, Jay Gee Melwani
Group represents and markets some of the
leading international names in lifestyle and
apparel. Through joint-venture partners
and associates, we are headquartered in
Singapore, with representations in Dubai,
India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
All of which didn’t happen overnight
either. You have to be ever ready to seize
opportunities in a sea of continuing change.
And you have to keep at it for more than a
century. So what’s the big secret behind our
success? Simply this: a dash of innovation
and commitment to quality, mixed with
dedicated service and integrity, in a caring
highly motivating and rewarding corporate
culture.
ES TA BLISHED 1883
It all began in 1883 when a young man named
Jhamatmall Gurbamall (J.G.) Melwani left Penang,
Malaysia, in search of a better life. With only a case
of leather slippers, he set sail for Medan, Sumatra.
Not hard cash, but slippers, for his plan was to start
immediately.
Ambition and youth served him well. The money
made from the slippers was quickly invested on a
bicycle and acquiring more goods. Just after two
years of peddling the streets, he saved enough for
his own shop in Medan – Jhamatmall Gurbamall &
Co. Not bad, considering Jhamatmall had only just
turned 27.
By 1890, offices were established in Singapore,
Yokohama, Calcutta and Padang.
The helm was passed over to Chandiram Melwani
in 1938 who took the business one step further
Our History
to include trade in European textiles. However,
turbulent times from the ‘30s to the early ‘50s, which
included the Great Depression, affected several
businesses, and J.G.’s business was no exception.
Almost all of its offices were forced to close.
Well-tempered by the hard times, the company met
with yet another turning point as leadership was
handed over to a young Moti Melwani in 1956, who
embarked on a new strategy – obtain new agency
contracts and franchises. In 1964, the landmark
distribution deal with Levis Strauss & Co., for South-
East Asia was signed.
Given the rights to market and distribute Levi’s jeans
in the region, the company, through aggressive
marketing and positioning, successfully translated
the jean’s iconic image over to the Asian market.
Back on the retail front, B.H. Melwani, Moti’s cousin
started an exclusive menswear store in 1971. Situated
at Singapore’s High Street, Melwani’s Men’s Shop
was an instant hit. Then in 1975, Moti and B.H.
consolidated their businesses and efforts together to
create MB Melwani Pte Ltd., an associate company of
Jay Gee Enterprises, which went on to acquire coveted
exclusive franchises for high fashion brands, many of
which are still held today.
It has been over a century since J.G. Melwani braved
Medan alone, his business assets all on a bicycle. With
over a hundred outlets spanning the region, the group
has come a long way.
But some things remain the same. You can still be
assured of quality; you can still expect great service;
and yes, you can still buy leather slippers from Jay
Gee Melwani Group’s designer boutiques.
ES TA BLISHED 1883
At Jay Gee Melwani Group, we are
recognized as one of the region’s
leaders in the representation and
development of branded lifestyle
products.
For our customers, it means providing
an unparalled selection of products
respected and recognized for its
quality, service, creativity and
presentation within its industry. All
this with no compromise on value to
the customer.
Our Mission
& Vision
For our business partners, it means
maintaining, but more importantly,
building long-term, mutually-rewarding
relationships with principals, suppliers,
customers and communities. As a
survivor of many global and national
economic storms, we have grown
to witness the value of relationships
beyond financial statements. The
solidarity of commitment over making
a quick buck.
And for our employees, it’s no less
than the understanding that they
are the most valuable assets we
have. It’s a dedication to rewarding
and recognizing their efforts, their
contribution to growth and success,
both theirs and ours. Simply put, a
company cannot grow if it doesn’t start
on a personal level.
Our Vision:
“We aspire to be the leading
branded lifestyle company that
cares for people while remaining
competitive in the market place”
Our Late Co-Chairman
work” that turned the then-textile business
The Straits Times, dub him as “Retailing’s
Mr Nice Guy”. He was also nominated
Established 110 years ago, T.M.Lewin, Jermyn Street London, a
favourite of city workers since 1898, is credited with being the first
to create the ‘coat shirt’. Whilst a shirt with buttons up the front
(which allowed men to get dressed without spoiling their shirt with
macassar hair oil!) is now the business uniform for all men, it was
quite revolutionary at that time.
As well as offering over 50 shirt fabrics at any one time, it offers
different cuts for different body shapes and fashion preferences as well
as a wide range of collar sizes and sleeve lengths to ensure a perfect
fit. And with over 100 new fabric designs released each month, many
in limited quantities, it can still offer the sort of individuality usually
only attributed to personal tailors.
It has not relied solely on its reputation for men shirts. It has turned
its somewhat obsessive attention to detail to beautifully made suits,
ties and accessories offering a business wardrobe to both men and
women who need to be city sharp for work but want to be distinctive.

SETTING STANDARDS IN BRAND MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING
CUSTOMISED MARKETING If you know a sure-fire method to marketing a product successfully, we don’t want to hear about it. There’s no
such thing. But neither is it a mysterious undeterminable process. Each partner brand is managed and marketed by a team solely dedicated
to the success of the brand. There are no handed-down frameworks to follow. Each brand dictates its own plan, its own set of strategies and
tactics. Full autonomy is given to the teams, keeping the ideas fresh, creative, forthcoming and just one step ahead of the competition.
SUPPORT SYSTEMS Any team, no matter how capable, will be
crippled without competent support. We have two: a central
administrative team, and a senior management team. We also
have highly integrated office and retail systems, constantly
upgraded with the newest software: from point-of-sale right up to
regional management levels.
OPERATIONS + DISTRIBUTION The heart of our business is
our distribution and warehousing teams. Retail and distribution
operations are continually refined to better serve the consumer
with the full recognition that how and when the product is
delivered is an integral part of brand building.
RETAIL + WHOLESALE Perhaps the pet strength of the company
is the regional network we have with leading departmental stores
and select independent retailers. Add that to our stragically
placed single-brand boutiques and retail outlets, and you have
a combination that’s best able to project the intended brand
image, ensuring optimum traffic from the target audience.
STORE PLANNING + VISUAL MERCHANDISING You could
say that we have learned a few things after over a hundred
years of experience. After all, our stores have won the American
Express Awards for “Best Stores - Retail” in the three successive
years it was held. Each of our boutique stores, departmental
store concept corners and retailer outlets is designed with the
target customer’s total experience in mind. We fully understand
that everything adds to the brand image from the choice in
wood panels to the manner in which one answers the phone.
SETTING
STANDARDS
IN BRAND
MANAGEMENT AND
MARKETING
ADVERTISING + PROMOTIONS It’s no secret that we’re brand builders.
For that reason, it should also be no surprise that we boast a higherthan
industry-average advertising spend. It’s essentially what makes
Brand A better than Brand B, and we’re banking it all on A. Relentlessly!
Otherwise, how are we to maintain our much-higher-than-industryaverage
advertising return?
RESEARCH + STRATEGY This is when our company sits and thinks on
how to stay ahead of the competition by, of course, first researching the
competition. And then ourselves, our consumers, their perception of us,
changing buying patterns, emerging trends, so on and so forth. It’s a hefty
task but one that’s done every year. Then we’ll refine, fine-tune, or totally
throw out the old and create new strategies. And then after the year’s
over, we’ll do it all over again.
TRAINING + DEVELOPMENT Our employees are our most valuable
assets. You could say that they are the group in the Jay Gee Melwani
Group. And lest you think this a chest-beating company statement,
here’s what they receive: regular management training (with in-house
management trainer), language skills, sales and service skills, supervisory
skills, personal grooming skills and even weekly, company-wide yoga
sessions. We understand that all good relationships start with listening to
what the other has to say and that’s what we do at the Jay Gee Melwani
Group, a company with an unusually low staff turnover. The employee’s
personal development is our development. Their growth, our growth.
COMMUNITY
GIVING BACK TO OUR COMMUNITY
At Jay Gee Melwani Group, we believe we have a responsibility of looking after our community.
The founders, BH Melwani and the late Moti Melwani were fortunate to have survived the trauma of the India-Pakistan partition in 1947.
It is, for these Sindha children, the M.B. Melwani Trust was formed in 1990 to provide primary and secondary education to approximately
1,200 disadvantaged Sindha refugee children living in the slum areas in 13 cities in India.
The trust also assists in providing wedding dowries, financial assistance to widows, medical treatment to the disabled as well as those
suffering hardships due to natural disasters.
The group together with Levi Strauss & Co Asia Pacific division, has sponsored the Action for Aids Group’s Annual AIDS Awareness Walk
in Singapore.
It is with pride that the group has regularly supported events and organizations such as the Jesuit Refugee Service, Boys’ Town Singapore, the
Interact Club, National Arts Council, National Cancer Society of Malaysia, the National Kidney Foundation, the Asian Welfare Association
and the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society. During the Indonesian crisis of 1999, clothing was provided to Indonesian children and Burmese
refugees who had been severely affected.
