Jiro Dreams Of Sushi chronicles the life of Tokyo’s most famous sushi
The Dandenong Market
With a local population comprising more than 150
nationalities, it seems only fitting that Dandenong hosts a
world fair. This weekend, as part of the Melbourne Food
and Wine Festival, the Dandenong World Fair celebrates
the culture and cuisine of its many migrant communities –
among them Greeks, Italians, Latvians, Dutch and Polish,
and more recent arrivals from Africa and the Middle East.
Accommodating the hawker style stalls, food tastings
and cultural entertainment is the recently redeveloped
Dandenong Market. In the last few years, at a cost of
$26 million, this bustling community hub has acquired a
new general merchandise building (2009), fresh produce
section (2010) and meat, fish and deli hall (2011). It is
one of several key urban renewal projects constituting the
‘Revitalising Central Dandenong’ initiative, which builds
upon the region’s history to deliver positive urban change.
Dandenong’s potential as a market town was first identified
during a settlement survey in the 1850s. But it wasn’t until
1864 that the Colonial Government granted approval for
the development of Dandenong Market at the behest of
petitioning ratepayers. In October 1866, the Market was
officially opened on the intersection of Lonsdale and
McCrae Streets. Relocation to the current site came 60
years later and its form and function reconfigured several
times since.
A vibrant extension to the Market’s history is the injection of
multicultural influences. Today, Dandenong is recognised
as the heart of Melbourne’s growing southeast corridor
and the Market the melting pot of its many cultures.
Diverse tastes and treasures come from as far afield as
Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Brazil, China and Malaysia. It’s a
veritable feast for all in attendance, reflecting the colourful
community that is Dandenong.
Sebastian’s Food & Wine
Inspired by memories of spontaneous meals shared with
friends, Bek Malherbe (ex City Wine Shop, St Jude’s,
Boire and Cavallero) has rolled out the welcome mat
at Sebastian’s Food & Wine. It’s a lively local boasting
unhurried style, but underpinned by thoughtful precision.
Sebastian’s represents a passion that has been
percolating for 10 years. It started with a blackout in a
charming trattoria on the Italian coast – a makeshift meal
of mussels and white wine reminded Malherbe that simple
pleasures are often the best. What followed were seasons
spent working in European and Victorian vineyards, then
hospitality stripes earned at Melbourne’s more prestigious
bars. Finally, supported by mum Kathy (a local interior
designer) and dad Michael (a builder), Malherbe found and
fashioned the perfect premises. Not entirely coincidental
is the Bayside location, the nostalgic stomping ground of
her childhood.
Sebastian’s storm blue palette, softened with blonde-wood
furnishings, recalls Hampton Beach under tempestuous
skies. It’s a unique space, which wraps around the
street front and hugs the pathway running next to the
train line. With assorted seating, under dappled light and
surrounded by sea-inspired foliage, its spacious courtyard
is the perfect place to enjoy a half dozen rock oysters with
a cheeky glass of Prosecco.
Picking produce from local and specialist suppliers, chef
Jake Scannell (ex Cavallero) grows, bakes and cures
much of the menu in-house. ‘Big Salads’ and kids’ plates
attract plenty of attention, as do the Lazy Day Breakfast
Plate of boiled egg, tomato, cucumber, prosciutto, olives
and marinated fetta ($16) and grilled catch of the day
with Mexican-inspired charred sweet corn and coriander
chermoula ($25). A careful selection of wines and aperitifs,
sourced direct from the producers, provides the perfect
accompaniment to what effortlessly slips into a long and
memorable lunch.
