High School Attendance Procedures
A parent or guardian must call the High School (356-2050) BEFORE 9:00 am on the day a student is absent. If the high school does
not receive a phone call, we will call to inform you that your son or daughter is not in school. We will call your home number first.
If there is no answer, we will call your work or cell number. This procedure gives you immediate information if your son or daughter
is not in school. Please help us with attendance by calling the high school on the day your son or daughter is absent. The high
school has voice mail capability so you may leave attendance messages before or after office hours.
Tardies
If students are tardy for school in the morning,
they must check in to the office. They will receive
a half hour detention every other time
they are late unexcused. We understand that
there are times when being tardy is unavoidable;
therefore, detention is given only for every
second tardy. However, punctuality and good
attendance are key to a successful school
year.
Family Vacations
If families are planning a vacation, please notify
the school. Students will be issued a green
sheet where they are required to make up all
their work before leaving. All green sheets
must be signed by all teachers before the student
leaves and the form MUST be turned in to
the office prior to leaving. These days will not
be counted against their days of attendance.
Remember that each day missed is two
days in a block class.
Telephone Calls
Our office receives many telephone calls from parents
who want to leave messages for students.
Unless it is an emergency, we do not call students
out of class to get these messages. If possible, we
would like to limit these messages to emergencies
only. Many times when students are called to the
office for messages to call home, it causes them to
be late for the next class. We would like to eliminate
these tardies if possible.
Please be advised that if you see “West Fargo High
School” on your caller ID, we have no way of knowing
who called you if that person did not leave you a
message. All outgoing calls from our school show
up on your caller ID with the same number of 499-
1800. Please be aware that if staff is calling, they
will leave a message or call again.
Assignment Requests
Students who are absent at least two days
may request assignments by calling the high
school counseling office at 356-2055. Please
call as soon as you can by 9:00 am to allow
teachers time to complete the request
form. Assignments may be picked up in the
counseling office before 4:00 pm. Parents or
a designated person will need to get any books
or materials from the student's locker.
Progress Reports
Progress reports will be available to
parents during conferences December
13, March 1 and April 28. December 8,
February 15 and May 1. Any progress
reports not picked up during conferences
will be sent to parents. Please
feel free to access your son/
daughter’s grades thru
the Parent Portal. The
end of first quarter is
Monday, October 31st.
In connection with the federal
legislation No Child Left Behind,
juniors at WFHS will take the state
assessment on the mornings of
October 26, 27 and November 2, 3.
Attendance is extremely important
as all of these tests must be completed
by all of our juniors. This will
result in an abbreviated schedule
for all students at on these days,
which will allow all classes to
meet. PLEASE PAY CAREFUL AT-
TENTION TO THE ADJUSTED
SCHEDULE!
Based on the results of each student’s
reading assessments, students
who are not proficient will be
REQUIRED to take either the
course SECONDARY READ-
ING. Students may also be required
to take a math intervention
course if their scores fall below
the state required level.
State law requires every junior to
take either the ACT or Work-
Keys. Students will need to choose
to take either the ACT or WorkKeys
based on what they plan to do after
they graduate. Students who plan to
attend a four year college or university
will want to take the ACT for
admission purposes. Those students
who plan to go directly to work after
high school or those who plan to
attend a technical school that
doesn’t require the ACT for admission
should take WorkKeys.
Catch the Spirit
From the Counselors
The philosophy of the WFHS Counseling Department is to offer guidance and support to help each student toward a successful high school experience. Services
are offered to students in the areas of personal, educational, social, and career counseling through individual, small group, and classroom contact, as well as
limited family consultation. The counseling office is a safe place to explore questions and issues concerning you. Confidentiality will be maintained within all legal
limits.
How is My Child Doing in School?
Counselors are often asked this question by
parents. We would ask that you visit first and
foremost with your son or daughter and also
check the Parent Portal on a regular basis. If
you have a need to visit directly with a teacher
about grades or an assignment you may
contact them by way of a direct call,
voicemail, or email. You may call the school to
be transferred to voicemail or obtain an
email address.
ASSESSMENT SCHEDULE 2011
10th Grade - PLAN Test
Sophomores will take the PLAN test on the
mornings of November 2 and 3, 2011. PLAN
includes an academic assessment, a career
interest inventory and a predicted ACT score.
There is no fee charged to the student.
The academic assessment and ACT prediction
helps students determine if they are on track
for success in college. The interest inventory
section of the PLAN gives students a head
start on career and educational planning.
Parents and students will be offered the opportunity
in a group evening session to review
the results through sessions offered
during Parent/Teacher Conferences December
8, 2011. WFPS believe the PLAN test and
the interpretation with parents and students
is one of the most important education and
career planning tools available to students.
11th Grade - NDSA
The state of North Dakota mandates all high
school juniors take the North Dakota State
Assessment (NDSA). WFHS is administering the
tests on Oct 26, 27 and November 2, 3, 8, 9.
ASVAB Testing
This year the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude
Battery (ASVAB) will be taken by all seniors on
November 3, 2011. The ASVAB identifies a student’s
skills, abilities and interests to help them
make realistic and satisfying educational and
career choices. MEP personnel will return to
interpret results with the seniors on November
15 or 16.
PSAT/NMSQT Exam
The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic
Achievement Test/National Merit Scholarship
Qualifying Test) was administered to interested
students on Saturday, October 15. Especially high
achieving, college bound students who are taking
college-core courses were encouraged to take this
examination.
Juniors who take this test may be eligible to compete
for National Merit Scholarships. Sophomores
also had an opportunity to test on this date. Visit
www.collegeboard.com/psat to learn more.
WFHS Financial Aid Workshop
The counseling department will sponsor a financial
aid workshop on Thursday, December 8, 2011, at
6:30 pm at the high school during parent/teacher
conferences for seniors and their parents. The
workshop, conducted by Carolyn Zehren, Financial
Aid Director from Minnesota State University-
Moorhead, is designed to provide important information
regarding the status of this year's financial
aid, and procedures in completion of the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students
and parents are encouraged to apply online. To
apply on line “FAFSA on the Web Worksheets” will be
available in the counseling office and at the workshop.
All students who are considering postsecondary
training are strongly encouraged to
apply for financial aid. You may apply on-line at
www.fafsa.ed.gov. any time after January 1, 2012.
March 15, 2012 is the date to have the FAFSA completed
if you are interested in ND financial aid dollars.
Campus Visits
One of the best ways to help students select a
college is to visit the campus. Parents are
encouraged to visit the campus along with their
son/daughter. Any student planning a college
visit should stop by the counseling office and
pick up a brown Visitation Approval Form and an
informational handout. This form must be completed
and returned to the student’s counselor
at least 48 hours prior to the student’s absence.
A brown sheet will be issued to the student
and all assignments must be completed
before the visit takes place.
College Entrance Exam - ACT Registration
Some institutions and scholarship applications require an entrance exam
for admission or consideration. If seniors are required to take an exam,
there are two tests that will usually satisfy this requirement. Most four
year colleges in our area use the ACT but will accept the SAT as well. The
ACT Exam can predict how well a student will do in college. The ACT
Exam measures skills in English, mathematics, reading, and science
reasoning. These areas are tested because they include the major
areas of instruction in most high schools and college programs.
In order to receive the results in time to meet application deadlines, we
encourage seniors to retake the test early in the school year. Seniors
should test no later than February in order to have test scores available
for consideration for most scholarships and some applications.
Students planning to test need to apply on-line at www.actstudent.org
or stop by the counseling office to pick up a registration packet. Registration
must be completed approximately one month before each
test (mailed or completed on-line). Counselors will be able to help
students determine whether or not they need to take or re-take the
test.
Listed below are the test dates and registration deadlines for the
ACT. The registration fee is $34.00 or $49.00 with the Writing Test.
Some colleges and universities require the written portion of the ACT
that measures a student’s ability to express ideas effectively. It is best to
check at www.actstudent.org to see if the college you plan to attend
requires the written portion of the exam.
“Rodgers & Hammerstien’s CINDERELLA”
The timeless enchantment of a magical fairy
tale is reborn with the Rodgers & Hammerstein
hallmarks of originality, charm and elegance.
Originally presented on television in
1957 starring Julie Andrews, Rodgers & Hammerstein's
CINDERELLA was the most widely
viewed program in the history of the medium.
Its recreations in 1965 (starring Lesley Ann
Warren) and 1997 (starring Brandy as Cinderella
and Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother)
were no less successful in transporting
a new generation to the miraculous kingdom
of dreams-come-true. As adapted for
the stage, with great warmth and more than a
touch of hilarity, the hearts of children and
adults alike still soar when the slipper fits.
Performances are November 11 & 12 at 7:00
pm and November 13 at 2:30pm.
The West Fargo Dollars for Scholars invites you to become a member of our organization. Our goal is to provide financial assistance to students in the
West Fargo School district who continue their education after high school. Costs to attend college or technical school continue to escalate, placing the
dream of advanced education out of reach for many students. Scholarships awarded from West Fargo Area Dollars for Scholars can help make that
dream a reality.
The West Fargo chapter is led by a volunteer
board of directors consisting of business
leaders, educators, parents and professionals
from throughout the community. The
chapter operates in accordance with the bylaws,
legal status, policies and procedures of
Scholarship America and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
organization.
We encourage you to support this worthy
organization by becoming a Dollars for
Scholars member for the coming year. Memberships
are only $10 per family per year
form and sending it to the address given.
West Fargo Packer Backer Association
Information Sheet
This informational sheet is intended to answer some frequently asked questions about the West Fargo Packer
Backer Association. After reading this, we hope you will join our organization.
1. What is the purpose of the Packer Backer Association? The purpose of Packer Backers is to support,
encourage and generally assist athletic, speech, drama and (at the discretion of the Board) other programs and
events in the high school. It consists of a group of volunteers made up of parents and fans that are
dedicated to support events, athletic programs, the arts, and West Fargo High School in general.
2. How does the organization raise money? We currently have 5 major sources of revenue: 1) Selling
concessions at various events; 2) Marketing advertisements from area businesses, which appear in our fall,
winter, and spring activities programs. The programs are available at all home games and activities; 3) Selling
"photo buttons" of our students participating in their extra curricular activities; 4) Selling Packer Backer
memberships each year; and 5) The sale of advertising rights on the High School sign/electronic message
board center located in the northwest corner of the school property.
3. How are requests for assistance made? Advisors or coaches of the extra curricular activities submit their
requests through Curt Jones, Activities Director. These requests are then brought to the Packer Backer Board
of Directors for their consideration.
4. Is it true Packer Backers only help athletic programs? No. Packer Backers assist groups including
speech, debate, drama and the Technology Student Organization, publications, Science Olympiad, Close-up,
Packer Pride awards, Jr. ROTC, and Student Congress just to name a few. Contributions are also made to Post
Prom and Post Graduation parties.
5. What have Packer Backers done in the past? Packer Backers use the funds generated to help defray
expenses students would incur where there is insufficient funding available through the school. This includes,
but is not limited to, helping students pay portions of some entry fees or the cost difference between the
expenses of using a school bus versus a charter bus for lengthy trips out of town. Equipment not budgeted
through the school has also been purchased. Packer Backers also provides meal money for those students
attending a state tournament as well as purchasing EDC and State champion patches. During this school year,
Packer Backers has donated over $51,000 to many of the organizations and activities mentioned above.
We are on the web! Check us out.
Attention Junior and Senior Parents!!!
Planning has begun for the 24 th Annual Post Prom and Post Grad parties. We need your help to continue
these traditions! West Fargo HS Parents host the alcohol and drug free celebrations. Planned activities
include: free food and prizes, pool, bingo, climbing wall, video games, karaoke, Game Events, card games
and lots more! We are always looking for new ideas so please come and share yours. Committee
meetings are held the 2 nd Monday of each month at WFHS in Room 112C from 7-8:30pm. Upcoming
meeting Dates are:
Monday, Nov 14 th Monday, March 12 th
Monday, Dec 12 th Monday, April 16 th
Monday, Jan 9 th Monday, May 14 th
Monday, Feb 13 th
The Post Prom party will be held at the Schlossman Family YMCA on May 5 th , 2012 from midnight until
3:00am. This party is open to all juniors and seniors and their guest, even if they do not attend the prom.
The Post Grad party will be held on graduation night, June 3 rd , 2012 from 10:30pm until 4:00am at the
West Fargo High School. The party is open to all seniors and their guest.
These parties are not school sponsored activities so no funding comes from the district. All funds needed
to create special memories for your student are raised through parent and community contributions. A
small contribution from each family ensures a great time for all students who attend. We are suggesting
$25 per family or any amount you are able to give. Your investment of time to help plan or chaperone
either of these activities would also be appreciated. Please let us know how we can count on your
assistance for one or both of the parties by using the participation slip below.
*****If you own or are an employee of a business that would have a prize to donate for either or both of
these events, please contact Susan Birrenkott 701-238-8433 or stressedoutsusan@yahoo.com.
We appreciate your support of these two important events!
