On behalf of the Orientation Team, welcome to Concordia! We are so excited that you chose Concordia College . As we are a liberal arts college, you can expect to grow as a student, leader, and person . We invite you to take advantage of the unique experiences Concordia has to offer . What you decide to do in your time here is up to you, but use that time wisely . Orientation, and your years at Concordia, will fly by . Many students, faculty, and staff have been working diligently to plan an Orientation experience designed for you . Throughout your Orientation experience, you will have many opportunities to gain knowledge of campus resources, meet your fellow Cobbers, and build relationships with student leaders . The Orientation Leaders and Assistants are well trained and more than willing to help with any questions or concerns . Ask away, and put their knowledge and experience to the test! Additionally, you will have your Faculty Mentor, Resident Assistant, and Faculty Advisor, who are excellent resources for your time at Concordia . Developing these relationships will help ensure a successful experience . Have fun these next few days, as well as the entire year! This is a time of transition, and Orientation will surely help provide resources to make it a smooth one . At Concordia, you can expect to be challenged . Some of the best advice I have ever received from a professor at Concordia is to “develop a tolerance for uncertainty .” Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! Everything may not go exactly as you planned, but that’s OK! Allow yourself to be flexible . Whether you’re tackling challenging academics, or forming new friendships, these are exciting, landmark years that will shape your life . One thing is for certain; you will not leave Concordia the same . Throughout your college career, we urge you to become involved in something that interests you! Pursue your passions, as they will guide you to exactly where you need to go . The opportunities at Concordia are endless! There are more than 100 clubs and organizations on campus, and if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for – you can start your own club! We want to let you know that Student Government Association is here to serve you . Goal 1 – Instill a love of learning. “To love learning is to delight in being ‘thoughtful and informed’ and to delight in searching, discovering, in questioning and dialogue, and in excellence of effort and achievement .” Faculty members are passionate about helping students become intentional, lifelong learners. Orientation sessions, discussions and activities will provide students with an opportunity to begin to discover how Concordia will foster your love of learning. Goal 2 – Develop foundational skills and transferable intellectual capacities. “Foundational skills allow a person to do something; intellectual capacities enable a person to know when to do something, how to adapt it, and when to do it in a new way .” Students will continue to develop communication skills, as well as critical thinking and problem solving, beginning with the discussion of the book “Tears of the Desert.” Faculty Mentors and Orientation Leaders will also address adapting to the new academic environment at Concordia. Goal 3 – Develop an understanding of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and intercultural perspectives and their connections. “A liberal education provides students with opportunities to evaluate assumptions in their own lives, to investigate the impact of these assumptions on the lives of others, and possibly to forge a new assumptive base as a result .” The club-class connections established during Orientation and the fall semester will give students an opportunity to work with individuals in other disciplines and from other cultures. Events such as Hands for Change and discussions about “Tears of the Desert” will allow students to gain new perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of our world. Goal 4 – Cultivate an examined cultural, ethical, physical and spiritual self-understanding. “Liberal learning, in its conversation with various traditions of conviction, practice, and analysis, helps students to know themselves and to be reflective about their identities .” Through various Orientation sessions and activities, new students are encouraged to consider their goals, place at Concordia and responsible decision making as young adults. Specifically, students will explore self and leadership during the BREW Café and “What’s It All About.” Goal 5 — Encourage responsible participation in the world. “Liberal learning cultivates understanding, ability and sensitivity for thoughtful, informed and active participation in the world .” Concordia is committed to connecting with the larger community and developing meaningful relationships. Hands for Change is an event for students to participate in and experience the importance of service-learning and connection with the community. The book discussion will also highlight our responsibilities as global citizens. Concordia College’s Goals for Liberal Learning A college degree is a beginning, not an end . Four years is not enough time to learn all you’ll need to know to face the challenges of a rapidly changing world . Concordia will prepare you for a lifetime of learning by challenging you to ask questions, seek answers, communicate your knowledge to others and act as a responsible citizen of a global community . This is the modern picture of a liberally educated person . The Goals for Liberal Learning were written to create a specific vision for liberal arts education at Concordia . These goals will form the foundation for your entire Concordia experience, from Orientation to graduation . A message about assessment Throughout your Concordia experience, we will be asking you to tell us about your experience at various times and in various ways . In order to determine what and how you are learning, you will be asked to complete periodic assessments that measure your knowledge and skills relative to established student learning outcomes (SLOs) . The information we collect from these assessments helps us to better meet your learning needs and improve the teaching and learning process at Concordia . It is crucial that we measure the effectiveness of the Goals for Liberal Learning (listed to the left) because they directly reflect the mission of Concordia .
