Welcome From Student Government!
Welcome to Concordia! This is a time of transition, and Orientation will surely help provide resources to make
it a smooth one . At Concordia, you can expect to be challenged . Some of the best advice I have ever received
from a professor at Concordia is to “develop a tolerance for uncertainty .” Don’t be afraid to step out of your
comfort zone! Everything may not go exactly as you planned, but that’s OK! Allow yourself to be flexible .
Whether you’re tackling challenging academics, or forming new friendships, these are exciting, landmark years
that will shape your life . One thing is for certain; you will not leave Concordia the same .
Throughout your college career, we urge you to become involved in something that interests you! Pursue your
passions, as they will guide you to exactly where you need to go . The opportunities at Concordia are endless!
There are more than 100 clubs and organizations on campus, and if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking
for – you can start your own club!
We want to let you know that Student Government Association is here to serve you . If you have a question or
would like to see our campus do something differently, please stop by our office or email us!
Happy BREWing!
Colin Sullivan, SGA Vice President
Goal 1 – Instill a love of learning.
“To love learning is to delight in being ‘thoughtful and informed’ and to delight in searching, discovering,
in questioning and dialogue, and in excellence of effort and achievement .”
Faculty members are passionate about helping students become intentional, lifelong learners. Orientation sessions,
discussions and activities will provide students with an opportunity to begin to discover how Concordia will foster your
love of learning.
Goal 2 – Develop foundational skills and transferable intellectual capacities.
“Foundational skills allow a person to do something; intellectual capacities enable a person to know when
to do something, how to adapt it, and when to do it in a new way .”
Students will continue to develop communication skills, as well as critical thinking and problem solving, beginning
with the discussion of the book “Tears of the Desert.” Faculty Mentors and Orientation Leaders will also address
adapting to the new academic environment at Concordia.
Goal 3 – Develop an understanding of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and
intercultural perspectives and their connections.
“A liberal education provides students with opportunities to evaluate assumptions in their own lives, to
investigate the impact of these assumptions on the lives of others, and possibly to forge a new assumptive
base as a result .”
The club-class connections established during Orientation and the fall semester will give students an opportunity to
work with individuals in other disciplines and from other cultures. Events such as Hands for Change and discussions
about “Tears of the Desert” will allow students to gain new perspectives and develop a deeper understanding of our world.
Goal 4 – Cultivate an examined cultural, ethical, physical and spiritual
self-understanding.
“Liberal learning, in its conversation with various traditions of conviction, practice, and analysis, helps
students to know themselves and to be reflective about their identities .”
Through various Orientation sessions and activities, new students are encouraged to consider their goals, place at
Concordia and responsible decision making as young adults. Specifically, students will explore self and leadership during
the BREW Café and “What’s It All About.”
Goal 5 — Encourage responsible participation in the world.
“Liberal learning cultivates understanding, ability and sensitivity for thoughtful, informed and active
participation in the world .”
Concordia is committed to connecting with the larger community and developing meaningful relationships. Hands for
Change is an event for students to participate in and experience the importance of service-learning and connection with
the community. The book discussion will also highlight our responsibilities as global citizens.
Concordia College’s
Goals for Liberal
Learning
A college degree is a beginning, not an end . Four
years is not enough time to learn all you’ll need to
know to face the challenges of a rapidly changing
world . Concordia will prepare you for a lifetime
of learning by challenging you to ask questions,
seek answers, communicate your knowledge
to others and act as a responsible citizen of a
global community . This is the modern picture
of a liberally educated person . The Goals for
Liberal Learning were written to create a specific
vision for liberal arts education at Concordia .
These goals will form the foundation for your
entire Concordia experience, from Orientation to
graduation .
A message about assessment
Throughout your Concordia experience, we will
be asking you to tell us about your experience
at various times and in various ways . In
order to determine what and how you are
learning, you will be asked to complete periodic
assessments that measure your knowledge and
skills relative to established student learning
outcomes (SLOs) . The information we collect from
these assessments helps us to better meet your
learning needs and improve the teaching and
learning process at Concordia . It is crucial that
we measure the effectiveness of the Goals for
Liberal Learning (listed to the left) because they
directly reflect the mission of Concordia . Thank
you in advance for your enthusiastic participation
in these assessments .
GOALS FOR LIBERAL LEARNING 3
Concordia means
“our hearts together”
in Latin.
The word “Cobber” is an Australian
expression for pal or buddy,
but Concordia Cobbers received
the name because the school
was first built on a corn field.
4 BEANIE TRADITION
The Beanie Tradition
A Symbol
The beanie is not just attractive headgear! It is a symbol of community and of a new beginning at Concordia .
Your beanie symbolizes that you are now a Cobber . Wear it with pride, as so many before you have!
History of the Beanie (From the “Cobber Chronicle”)
The Wearing of the Green
“‘Freshman boys must wear green caps and freshmen girls beanies of the same verdant hue!’ This was
the dictum first enforced by the class of 1925 in the fall of 1922 — and with a large freshman class, those
sophomores had their green headgear another two weeks . After this, such annual competitions between the
two classes became traditional at Homecoming .”
The green caps were abandoned in 1942 when green dye (produced in Germany) could not be obtained . In
1955, maroon and gold beanies were introduced . Ten years later, wearing of the beanies was discontinued for
one year, but in 1966 the beanies returned . Today the tradition of beanies (gold for first-year students, maroon
for transfer students) is still going strong!
Be on the lookout for Cobber Beanie Patrol!
Throughout Orientation, volunteers will be on the lookout for new students taking part in the beanie tradition . If
they catch YOU wearing your beanie, your name will be placed in a drawing for prizes . Look for prize-winners’ names
on the digital display screens in the Knuston Campus Center Atrium .
The Beanie Toss
The beanie toss occurs immediately after Convocation . This tradition marks the first day of your Concordia
College academic career!
Beanie Rules
All new students have been issued a Concordia beanie — gold to first-year students and maroon to transfer
students . First-year and transfer students are encouraged to wear their beanies from Sunday, Aug . 26, until the
Beanie Toss following Convocation on Thursday, Aug . 30 .
• Beanies should not be worn off campus.
• Replacements for lost or stolen beanies may be purchased for $7 at the Parke Student Leadership Center,
located on the second floor of the Knutson Campus Center .
• Hazing activities involving the beanie are not permitted. Hazing is a violation of college policy. Hazing is defined
as any willful act done by one or more individuals whether physical, mental, emotional or psychological, which
subjects another person, voluntarily or involuntarily, to anything that may abuse, mistreat, degrade, humiliate,
harass, ridicule, intimidate or endanger him or her, or which may in any fashion compromise his or her inherent
dignity as a person . Violations of this policy should be reported to Residence Hall staff, Orientation Leaders or the
Student Affairs Office .

Instrumental Music Auditions
• Membership into any of the Concordia College concert bands, orchestras and jazz ensembles is open to
any interested student who completes an audition . The annual audition process takes place during the
week in which classes begin each fall . Auditions are designed to be an encouraging experience for all
students .
• Regardless of previous experience and/or skill level, there is a place for interested wind and percussion
instrumentalists to make music at Concordia College!
• The audition process, especially for new students, primarily allows music department faculty to
appropriately place musicians into the many instrumental ensembles offered at Concordia College .
Borrowing Instruments
Concordia College maintains an inventory of more specialized wind instruments (e .g ., oboe, bassoon, bass
clarinet, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, horn, euphonium and tuba) . Students interested in using a
college-owned instrument for auditions should contact:
• Bassoon, Saxophone: Russ Peterson; rpeters@cord.edu
• Bass Clarinet: Dr. Leigh Wakefield; wakefiel@cord.edu
• Horn: Karin Wakefield; kwakefie@cord.edu
AUDITIONS 15
Music Lessons
Lessons are available from music department
faculty to any interested student . The cost for
lessons is $410 per semester for a 30-minute
weekly lesson . Lessons are scheduled individually
with faculty so that a lesson time that does not
conflict with scheduled classes can be identified .
Students who are selected for membership
into The Concordia Band or The Concordia
Orchestra are required to study privately, as are
students who have received a Concordia Music
Performance Scholarship .
