To the Honorable Select Board: COUNCIL ON AGING Founded in 1970s, the Longmeadow Adult Center has been serving Longmeadow residents for almost 30 years. During this time, the Longmeadow Adult Center has created opportunities for mature adults to live healthy, active lives. This experience enables the lives Longmeadow adults and their caregivers to be enriched. We provide a place for people to come and enjoy life-long learning with their peers or access to supportive services and programs for mature adults, their families and caregivers. PROMOTING LIFELONG LEARNING – WELLNESS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT – PERSONAL GROWTH FY 06 was filled with opportunities to exercise the body, intellect and spirit. Classes and programs have a tradition of quality and success at The Center and fiscal year 2006 proved no exception. The Adult Center sponsored programs attracted 32,588 visits during the year, a 30% increase from the previous year. With over 40 classes and programs offered each month, covering everything from wellness, educational & humanities, lunch, in-home services, volunteer opportunities and family support, there was something offered for every interest. Education, fitness and wellness programs were offered on an ongoing basis to support and respond to the interests and needs of our communities’ mature adults. One highlight in FY 06 was the town-wide celebration of Wellness/Fitness Month in May 2006. Residents were invited to participate in all of our wellness and fitness programs at the Center. During the month, The Center was bubbling with activity with many residents who had never participated at The Center while others were encouraged to try something new! Residents witnessed first hand that our wellness programs make a significant contribution to a person’s overall health and independent lifestyle. During the year, received an Automatic External Defibrillator; the Health Coordinator worked on the Town’s Emergency Preparedness Plan; Volunteerism hours increased with 862 additional volunteer hours contributed; the Social Service Coordinator saw an increased need for assistance with federal and state assistance program applications; finally, the Program Coordinator’s monthly programs continued to thrive with increased attendance in our Fitness and Exercise Programs; Computer Classes; Language Classes and Ongoing classes such as Art, Bridge, Discussion Groups and other programs. The Center has been and continues play a major role in assuring that Longmeadow’s residents maintain their independent lifestyles for as long as they choose to remain in their homes. The Adult Center’s Annual Statistical Report indicated growth for another year in units of service and residents served by The Center. Our Wellness, Supportive Services and Programs showed the greatest growth. A sampling of this year’s growth is outlined below. Programs like “Maintain Your Brain”, “Heart Health”, Blood Sugar Meter Tune-Up and the implementation of “RxWise” – Medication Safety Assessment Program were just a few examples of Wellness programs held during the year. Tennis Lessons, Water Aerobics, Pilates, Dancercise, Veteran’s Group were program highlights this year. Overall, the focus our programs and services were on Keeping the Mind Active, because research shows that adults need to stimulate the brain to remain healthy. Here are the statistical highlights for FY 2006: Adult Center Visits: Programs - 900 Activities – 9,638 Fitness – 2,719 Travel – 252 Health Services – 2,831 Nutrition – 14,312 Supportive Services - 494 Total - 32,588 Visits FY 2006 Breakdown by Age: 35% Over 75 65% Under 75 Breakdown by Sex: Male – 27 % Female – 73% The Friends of Longmeadow Seniors were also quite active in FY 06, members shared their time, talent and financial support to enhance the programs and services offered by The Adult Center. Through donations, fundraisers, and gift shop revenues, the “Friends” continued to support the efforts of the Adult Center. Postage, equipment, supplies, programs and other support services were made possible by this organization. The Friends Group, Adult Center Staff and especially our dedicated group of over 200 volunteers have provided support over the past 30 years that has enabled us to provide programs and services to better serve our residents. In 20
addition, the Longmeadow Adult Center wishes to thank the Select Board, Town Manager Robin Crosbie and our residents for their continued support. The Longmeadow Adult Center remains one of the Commonwealth’s exceptional Adult Centers because of this high level of community support, cooperation and belief in the value of the programs offered.
