Despite kicking and screaming, despite throwing one
tantrum after the other, even despite lamenting with
sad, tear-fi lled eyes and droopy shoulders, the advent of
the years will not crumble or slip one rung of the ladder;
slip, tumble, or fade away into eternal darkness. The
advent of the years will not STOP! No matter what you do,
it will be to no avail … until the cows come home…
Some months ago the umpteenth birthday in my life came
looming over my shoulders while I was not watching. I
had just turned my back to pay attention to the one or
other precious, almost extinct miniscule plant venturing
out into the alien and not-so friendly habitat of ours,
when the awareness of this imminent birthday hit me like
a ton of bricks - unannounced, unavoidable, unwelcome
indeed. However, one has to be on your best behaviour
at all times as far as the sneaking nature of time per se is
concerned.
And taking life seriously, I can assure you that at this very
moment I am asking myself: Is 83+ a blessing or is ageing
for the birds? But let’s get a bit analytical: Is 83+ a blessing
in disguise or is it something that should send me helterskelter
into hiding? No use, I can’t run away. I may just as
well throw in the towel, tackle the bull by the horns and
challenge it head on.
Another aspect about getting older is the irrevocable and
mischievous nature of time to intertwine itself into the
permanence thereof second by second, minute by minute,
year by year - never ever deviating from its function and
responsibility as the ticker of time that reminds me of the
”moving fi nger” of Kahlil Gibran which he described as
follows:
Getting half a word obliterated, let alone having someone
dab away the tears trickling down my cheeks... ladies, I
can’t bear being under the weather. I am going to bite
the bullet and since I am fairly au fait as far as ageing and
health are concerned, I’m going to be bold in giving you a
bird’s eye view of a phenomenon of aging, just for the fun
of it . You will love it, so, I will keep you posted…
“The moving fi nger writes
and having written, moves on;
Not all the piety or wit shall
Nor all they tears;
wipe out a word of it.”
