From the President Dear Alumni and Friends, One of the most satisfying and rewarding aspects of being a member of the DePaul University community is the commitment of our students, faculty, staff and alumni to enriching the community—through service, outreach or an individual’s own personal passion. Few institutions have done so much for so long or as well as DePaul. The dedication of the DePaul community to this singular purpose can be seen every day. DePaul is unique among institutions of higher education in its resolute commitment to fostering a deep respect for the dignity of all persons and to instilling in our students a dedication to service. I am impressed by how this critical element of our Vincentian, Catholic and urban mission manifests itself across an extraordinary range of activities, individuals and relationships. As an educational institution, we have a profound appreciation for how essential education is for opening doors and enhancing future opportunities. To help deliver this critical experience to youngsters throughout our city, DePaul actively partners with corporations and foundations to improve the quality of teaching and education available to all students. The Center for Urban Education, the Center for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education, and the Institute for Teacher Development and Research are all dedicated to this goal. Members of our community also give back in very personal ways. DePaul students serve as volunteers, sometimes in environments which require living in poverty and doing physical labor. Activities include caring for the elderly, feeding the homeless, tutoring children and assisting with building projects. University Ministry’s service immersion programs have sent students to needy communities in the U.S. and abroad. The Irwin W. Steans Center for Community-based Service Learning has enabled nearly 7,000 students to participate in service-learning projects with more than 00 Chicago-area service organizations. These experiences help students integrate a commitment to giving back into their daily lives. We also enrich the community by making a positive contribution to the economic and cultural fabric of our city. Capital projects that promote development, historic building preservation and job creation are contributing to the revitalization and restoration of Chicago’s South Loop. The joint university residence, developed in collaboration with other downtown universities, has led to the creation of one of the largest “college towns” in the country—right in the Loop. The DePaul Center, a unique experiment integrating retail, educational and civic space, offers new commercial options in this traditionally underserved area. The Merle Reskin Theatre adds to the city’s cultural landscape through a regular schedule of performances and programs. It is also gratifying to see how the impact of DePaul reaches beyond current students, faculty and staff. DePaul makes an unparalleled contribution to commercial, artistic and social enterprises of the region. Nearly 80,000 alumni living and working in the Chicago metropolitan area have devoted their lives to making Chicago a better place—from City Hall to Orchestra Hall and innumerable places in between. It is inspiring to see how DePaul’s commitment to the community and service stays with our students their entire lives. Consider Emily Zeman (LAS, ’42). Expressing her profound gratitude for the education that enabled her to pursue her passion for teaching, Miss Zeman made a $2.3 million bequest to DePaul. Her gift helps ensure that deserving students have the same opportunity she had to receive a quality education and realize their dreams. Our ability to provide an excellent education to deserving students requires considerable financial commitment and support from alumni, friends, parents, corporations and foundations. From an entire estate to a few dollars left after paying the bills, the partnership between DePaul and its alumni and friends is critical. Thanks to your generous contributions, DePaul’s capacity to continue to make a difference to our students and our community—both near and far—continues to grow. Our impact is significant. Our full potential has yet to be reached. We hope that you will continue to partner with us. I am deeply grateful to all who contribute to the vibrant experience that is DePaul University.
