visitors per year, the Frankfurt
Messe is the Continent’s oldest and

Infrastructure for American Companies
in Hessen: Networking for Business
American companies feel at home
in Hessen, in large part due to the
excellent infrastructure for doing
transatlantic business. The American
Chamber of Commerce in Germany,
which recently celebrated its
100th anniversary, is headquartered
in Frankfurt and provides a major
impulse for German-American business
relations.
The American government also
invests in Hessen: a recent example
is the new US Consulate complex in
Frankfurt-Eckenheim. In 2005, the
US Consulate moved into the newly
renovated $50 million building – the
former military hospital – that will
have enough space for up to 1,100
employees. The US Consulate in
the north of Frankfurt is the largest
American consular post and the
fi fth-largest diplomatic mission
in the world. Currently, the 900
Frankfurt-based staff members serve
a community of 250,000 American
citizens as well as 120 of the 260
American embassies and consulates
in Europe, Eurasia, Africa, and the
Middle East.

more than 20 sites in Germany since 1960, including three innovation centers with around 1,000 employees in
research and development. P & G has approx. 135,000 employees in nearly 80 countries worldwide, of whom about
17,000 are employed in Germany. Thus the German subsidiary, headquartered in Schwalbach in the Taunus area, is
the biggest subsidiary of P & G outside the United States.

Strong Bonds
There are many connections at
many levels between Hessen and
America – cultural, political, and
military. Some of these links are
quite recent – such as the Frankfurt
MesseTurm skyscraper designed
by the German-American architect
Helmut Jahn. But it is also useful
to look at historic connections that
illustrate the strength and stability
of the relations between Hessen
and the US dating back over 200
years.
The fi rst wave of German emigration
to the US had its roots in the
Revolution of 1848, which culminated
in Germany’s fi rst democratic
assembly in Frankfurt’s St. Paul’s
Church. By 1854, more than 220,000
Germans had emigrated to the US,
mainly for political, economic and
religious reasons.
The US military in Hessen has, of
course, played an important role in
strengthening US-German relations.
During the peak of the Cold War,
there were over 200,000 troops
stationed in Germany and many
were in Hessen. The Army’s Fifth
Corps, which at various times was
commanded by Dwight D. Eisenhower
and Colin Powell, was headquartered
in Frankfurt. And the
Armed Forces Network Europe
(AFN), with its English-language
radio and TV programming, has
been broadcasting continuously
from Frankfurt since 1943 until it
moved to Wiesbaden and Mannheim
recently.
Following the fall of the Berlin Wall,
the number of US troops has been
reduced. But the legacy of the
American military remains, and
continues to positively infl uence
Hessen’s relations with America.

is the “King of Rock and Roll” Elvis
Presley, who did a tour of duty as
an enlisted soldier from 1958 to

First European Elvis Festival took
place in 2002.

The American military fi rst re-introduced jazz to
Frankfurt, but it was the locals who embraced
it. To those in the know, Frankfurt is now one
of the European capitals of jazz music. The
Frankfurt Jazzkeller is Germany’s oldest jazz
club, where legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and
Louis Armstrong once performed.
Harley-Davidson, the motorcycle manufacturer and legendary symbol of the
American Dream – one of the most prominent Wisconsin companies – runs
its central-European operations from Mörfelden-Walldorf, at the southern
outskirts of Frankfurt.

Hessen-Wisconsin Partnership:
Growing Together
The depth of the German-American
ties is perhaps best illustrated by
the partnership between the States
of Hessen and Wisconsin. First established
in 1976 out of the personal
commitment of the then Wisconsin
governor and his Hessen counterpart,
the relationship has become
one of the strongest pillars of German-American
relations.
It is no wonder that this partnership
has been so successful over the
years. Wisconsin has been strongly
infl uenced by German immigrants,
and their presence can still be felt
today throughout the state. Indeed,
the annual three-day German Fest
in Milwaukee is the largest celebration
of German culture in America.
Both states are committed to supporting
Wisconsin companies
seeking access to Europe and to
assisting German entrepreneurs
who consider to do business in
Wisconsin and the US Midwest. In
the biotechnology sector, Hessen
and Wisconsin are building a transatlantic
biogateway to connect
these two centers of life sciences
in Europe and the United States.
The food, chemical, and pharmaceutical
industries in both states
are increasingly dependent on innovative
small and medium-sized businesses.
For this reason, Wisconsin
and Hessen developed a joint technology
transfer program. Wisconsin
and Hessen also highlight their
alliance with joint exhibitions at
major bio-technology trade fairs
in America and Europe.
Through this dynamic sister-state
partnership, it is clear that both
Hessen and Wisconsin are taking
advantage of new international
opportunities, and growing together.
Another strong Hessen-Wisconsin
partnership focus is on the exchange
of US students and German students.
In line with the Hessen-
Wisconsin Internship Program, the
initiative “Hessen Networks“, for
instance, provides internships in
Hessen for students from Wisconsin.
Already since 1999, through implementing
Bachelor and Master Study
Disciplines and offering specifi c
English-language study courses,
more foreign students, among them
also US citizens, have taken up
their studies at Hessian universities
increasingly.

In Hessen, often the countryside
is just a short drive from cities. The
Taunus Mountains, for example,
are just a 15-minute trip from
downtown Frankfurt. Bad Homburg,
Bad Soden, Bad Schwalbach, and
Schlangenbad, the famous cities
in the Taunus region, are dotted by

Near Wiesbaden the famous
Rhinegau region begins. While
