The open, modern educational landscape and the intimate cooperation between business and science are among Hessen’s particular strengths. Students and teachers from all around the world are drawn to the local educational institutions. Universities with an applied-science, and practical, orientation join international research institutes to form a network in which all sciences are represented. At the individual universities, regional focal areas have developed: the Philipps-Universität in Marburg has one of the richest traditions among German universities and is associated with the names of many important scientists. Famous scholars, such as the fi rst winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine, Emil von Behring, the chemist Robert Bunsen as well as Karl- Ferdinand Braun, the inventor of the fi rst cathode ray (Braun’s tube), laid the foundation for today’s scientifi c research disciplines of chemistry and medicine.
