Where Ideas Come to Life<br />
Throughout <strong>Hessen</strong>, “high-tech<br />
clusters” have formed. In these<br />
clusters, the know-how of scientifi c<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>and</strong> research centers<br />
fuses with the idea potential of<br />
entrepreneurs <strong>and</strong> the will<strong>in</strong>gness<br />
of technology service providers to<br />
<strong><strong>in</strong>vest</strong>. The open, modern educational<br />
l<strong>and</strong>scape <strong>and</strong> the <strong>in</strong>timate<br />
cooperation between bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>and</strong><br />
science are among <strong>Hessen</strong>’s particular<br />
strengths. Students <strong>and</strong> teachers<br />
<strong>from</strong> all around the world<br />
are drawn to the local educational<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutions. Universities with an<br />
applied-science, <strong>and</strong> practical,<br />
orientation jo<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational research<br />
<strong>in</strong>stitutes to form a network<br />
<strong>in</strong> which all sciences are<br />
represented.<br />
At the <strong>in</strong>dividual universities, regional<br />
focal areas have developed:<br />
the Philipps-Universität <strong>in</strong> Marburg<br />
has one of the richest traditions<br />
among German universities <strong>and</strong> is<br />
associated with the names of many<br />
important scientists.<br />
Famous scholars, such as the fi rst<br />
w<strong>in</strong>ner of the <strong>Nobel</strong> <strong>Prize</strong> for Medic<strong>in</strong>e,<br />
Emil von Behr<strong>in</strong>g, the chemist<br />
Robert Bunsen as well as Karl-<br />
Ferd<strong>in</strong><strong>and</strong> Braun, the <strong>in</strong>ventor of the<br />
fi rst cathode ray (Braun’s tube), laid<br />
the foundation for today’s scientifi c<br />
research discipl<strong>in</strong>es of chemistry<br />
<strong>and</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e. The University <strong>in</strong><br />
Marburg is also a famous center for<br />
language <strong>and</strong> cultural studies.<br />
