The Division of Infectious Diseases
plays a clinical and research
leadership role, locally, nationally
and internationally. We are a resource
for issues related to infectious disease
outbreaks, infection control and the
specialized areas of HIV, congenital
infections, management of infectious
complications of transplants, and the
ever-increasing problem of multidrug
resistant tuberculosis. Our TB
clinic, designed for appropriate
biocontainment, continues to expand.
In the area of education, our
Division continues to play a
leadership role in the Infectious
Diseases section of the Royal College
and in many areas of Continuing
Medical Education.
Infection Control studies include
the clinical and molecular
epidemiology of pediatric nosocomial
infections. Other continuing
research initiatives include
multicentered Pediatric HIV studies
related to maternal-to-child
transmission, and studies on new
antiretrovirals, vaccine studies and
studies on host susceptibility to
viral infections. Multicentered trials
on the diagnosis and prevention
of infections in transplant patients
are ongoing.
