2. Working, Research and Teaching Contributions A. Narrative Report Dr. P. Manser is a Medical Physicist at the Division of Med. Radiation Physics, Inselspital and University of Berne. He graduated with honor at the Department of Physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich, in 1998. He received his Ph.D. degree in Physics from ETH Zurich in 2003 under the guidance of Prof. P. Rüegsegger and Prof. P. Niederer. In 2004, he attained the Certification in Medical Physics of the Swiss Society of Radiobiology and Medical Physics (SSRMP). In his Ph.D. thesis, he investigated the verification of intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) with an electronic portal imaging device (EPID) and Monte Carlo methods. During the Ph.D. study, he worked closely with the Division of Med. Radiation Physics, Inselspital and University of Berne and industrial partners. The scientific impact of his investigations is expressed by a number of publications and presentations on international and national conferences. Next to his Ph.D., he served as a research assistant at the Division of Med. Radiation Physics, Inselspital and University of Berne. The project, he was working on was the Swiss Monte Carlo Plan project of the Swiss Innovation Promotion Agency (CTI). In 2003, Dr. Manser moved to Berne, where he works as a Medical Physicist for the Division of Med. Radiation Physics, Inselspital and University of Berne. In 2004, Dr. Manser was board certified as a Medical Physicist by SSRMP and his current position at the University of Berne is “Oberassistent”. His main topics in clinical routine are intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT), image guided radiotherapy (IGRT), treatment planning, brachytherapy, radiation protection, and computing and networks. Next to clinical routine, Dr. Manser is engaged in research topics such as Monte Carlo methods in radiotherapy and the development of enhanced brachytherapy concepts. Since 1998, Dr. Manser has been involved in the organization of the post-graduate course in Medical Physics (MAS ETH in Medical Physics) at ETH Zurich. This Master of Advanced Studies is targeted at physicists who want to become medical physicists. At the moment, Dr. Manser is still engaged with the organization of this master. Dr. Manser is a lecturer at ETH Zurich where he is teaching medical physics for physics students. He is a supervisor of a number of master theses at ETH Zurich. He is also teaching courses at the School for Radiotherapists in Berne, Switzerland. B. Reports of Clinical Activities 2003 – today Treatment Planning In radiotherapy, treatment planning is one major step towards successful therapy of cancer patients. For this purpose, individual dose calculations are performed taking into account the individual anatomy of the patient. In forward treatment planning, the plan is optimized by the operator (e.g. by adjusting the beam energy and using different wedges and beam angles). In contrast to this, inverse treatment planning aims to automatically determine the required energy fluences for a given dose distribution. For this purpose, optimization algorithms (typically iterative procedures) are implemented in modern treatment planning systems. Currently, at the Division of Med. Radiation Physics, the following planning systems are used in clinical routine: TMS, Masterplan, Eclipse, Plato, RadCalc. 3/12
