2002 – 2004 Advanced EPID dosimetry
The high-Z materials, commonly existing in a-Si:H based EPIDs, cause problems such as
an overresponse to low-energy photons. In this project, investigations on possible
improvements by different detector designs are carried out.
2003 – 2004 Clinical Monte Carlo treatment planning for photon beams
This project aims to develop clinical Monte Carlo (MC) treatment planning for photon
beams. Recently, this project was named as Swiss Monte Carlo Plan (SMCP)
demonstrating the fact that it is a collaborative work between different institutes in
Switzerland. This project is supported from the Swiss Innovation Promotion Agency
(CTI).
2004 – today Clinical Monte Carlo based radiotherapy treatment planning for IMRT
The project aims to include intensity modulated fields in Monte Carlo (MC) based
treatment planning. In addition, methods to adapt the existing beam model to individual
accelerators of the same type will also be developed. This project is a continuation of the
project mentioned above and is supported from the Swiss Innovation Promotion Agency
(CTI).
2006 – today Monte Carlo for Brachytherapy treatment planning
Typically, treatment planning in brachytherapy does not account for inhomogeneities,
which is in most situations a good approximation. However, in dedication conditions,
inhomogeneities are to be considered. For this purpose, Monte Carlo is best suited.
2007 – today Investigations on 4D radiotherapy
It is obvious that time needs to be considered in radiotherapy. A typical example is lung
cancer treatment where breathing induced motion has an impact on the dose distribution.
In this project, 4D radiotherapy is investigated by different aspects such as the
development of a dynamic phantom or the implementation of motion in Monte Carlo
methods. Parts of this project are supported from the Bernische Radiumstiftung.
2007 – today Electron Macro Monte Carlo for non Varian Machines
The project aims to extend the well-known eMC algorithm to other linear accelerators.
This project is supported by Varian Medical Systems.
