And that should make a lot of heads look better. That's the idea behind the 42nd annual North American Beauty and Fashion Show, scheduled Feb. 14-16 at the Hyatt Regency and chaired by Ms. Gebhard, a Livonia resident who has been in cosmetology for 32 years. The show sponsored by the Michigan Cosmetology Association will bring in top stylists and innovators to impart their knowledge to some 6,000 hairdressers expected to gather. M We try once a year to give our members a chance to meet really top national educators from all over the country," said Ms. Gebhard, who has been working on the show for nearly a year and is now winding up final details. She considers the project of great importance in her ever-changing profession. "Furthering our education is what we all have to keep doing," she said. "Everything we do toward education comes back tenfold And it's so rewarding to seem the younger cosmetologists learning at the big shows. "They get so excited, it makes up for a the work it takes to put this thing together." HEADLINERS for the weekend of learning that begins Saturday evening and runs through Monday include Doris Williams of Statesville, N.C.\ national stylesdirector for the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association; Charles Watkins of the Wolverine State Association, an expert on styling hair of blacks and orientals, and the Americoif group, local stylists. "We are fortunate to have all of them," said the show chairman. "Doris Williams is a gracious southern lady, and she has to have great ability to have been selected top national styling director. "Watkins will do a guest spot that should teach us all a lot. And the members of Americoif all have special skills. All of them, Anthony Marsalese, Jacqueline Robinson, Douglas J. Weaver, Felicia Palazzolo Shaw and Peter Scaglione, have educated themselves to the point where they are able to give the education they possess. "A lot of people can do these various stylings, but to be able to give as they can is a talent." In addition to the presentations by special guests, there will be some 50 exhibitors on hand, showing the latest in equipment and teaching particular skills. Ms. Gebhard said their classes and demonstartions will run Sunday and Monday to give all participants a chance to attend several. One is the Master Award competition, established for years and offering a $500 prize and a large trophy. "And this year we are adding a Novice Total Look contest for those who never have entered one of our competitions, said Ms. Gebhard. "Each entrant will do amodel from head to toe — hair style, makeup, outfit." The prize for that competition, she noted, will be two days of study with a noted Windsor stylist, Ezio of Canada. Ms. Gebhard, until recently owner of the Merre Belles Salon in Livonia, serves with the community's advisory council for career education, giving advice when needed on cosmetology instruction in Livonia schools. Her work attracts larger and larger numbers of young people, she noted, and a big share of salons are continuing to do well despite difficult economic times. Canton ©bseruer Monday, February 9, 1981 Jaycettes tell parents: It's kiss-your-baby week It's national Jaycette Week and 45,000 young women between the ages of 18 and 35 are celebrating Feb. 8-14 with special projects and meetings. Canton Township Jaycettes are joining chapters across the state in participating in the "Kiss Your Baby Week" project. It involves taking cystic fibrosis literature to stores and asking them to include the flyers in shopping bags when they pack merchandise. Ui The local Jaycettes have distributed posters and flyers to Meijer Thrifty Acres and other stores as well as to the Canton Library. The purpose of the statewide project is to alert parents to the symptoms of cystic fibrosis and other children's lung diseases. They hope that early diagrfosis and prompt treatment — an essential element in lengthening the lifespan of children with CF — will result. OTHER SYMPTOMS are recurrent wheezing, persistent coughing and excess mucus, pneumonia more than once during childhood, excessive appetite with poor weight gain, and clubbing (enlargement) of fingertips. Suspecting parents are directed to call their physician. "It is estimated that respiratory problems in children take up to 70 per cent of a pediatrician's time and are the leading cause of chronic absenteeism from school," said Sue Jagoda, president of the Canton Jaycettes. "Furthermore, cystic fibrosis is second only to cancer in the number of young lives it takes. One third of the victims of this disease are not yet diagnosed. "Because early diagnosis of CF is essential to longer life for these children, we have joined in the campaign to spread the word to residents of our community." Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease for which there is neither cure nor control. In CF a thick, sticky mucus clogs the lungs and airways creating breathing difficulties, high susceptibility to infection, and lung disease. The mucus also may interfere with digestion by preventing the flow of enzymes into the"small intestine, causing malabsorption of food. Though both parents must be carriers of the CF gene, according to medical authorities, one in 20 persons in the U.S. is a carrier. In Michigan alone, they estimate that there are nearly 500,000 such carriers. At present, there is no definitive test to determine a carrier of the CF gene. Directors are Lana Olson, Debbie Haller and Pat Bardel. The Jaycettes work closely with the Jaycees and already are planning the annual Walk for Mankind. The two groups cooperated in their Halloween project, the haunted house, and the Christmas project, a Santa's workshop at Meijer's. They prepared Christmas food baskets for needy families for Christmas. The women put on a special Christmas party for the residents of Whispering 4 announced the winner last week. The men built a puppet stage and the women made the curtains, sew- & ing more than 10 yards of material. They plan to make duffle bags for the toy section at the library. Children will be able to check out toys as well as books. The Jaycees built a puppet tree for the library and the women made and dressed puppets for the tree. 'Snow White' tickets are now on sale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" has been chosen by the American Association of University Women as its 21st annual children's play. Last year all performances were sold out — more than 5,400 seats — so Judy Stone, business manager, advises early reservations. The play will be presented at 7 p.m. Feb. 27; at 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Feb. 28, and at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. March 1 in Plymouth Salem High School auditorium. A benefit performance will be presented at 7 p.m. Feb. 26. Tickets at $1 each will be on sale at • H # « « extended school year (ESY) schools in the Plymouth-Canton District Feb. 13 and 17, and in the traditional school year schools, Feb. 16 and 17.
