For school lunches
Board weighs price hike
The Plymouth-Canton Board of Education
will be asked to increase the
price of student lunches at tonight's
meeting.
Most of the price increases will be
for five cents.
The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m.
in the board room at 454 S. Harvey,
Plymouth.
The price increases are being recommended
by the Food Service Parent
Advisory Committee to help offset a
deficit in the district's food operation.
Dr. John M. Hoben, superintendent of
schools, said he also recommends the
increased prices in light of a potential
deficit of $88,000 in the cafeteria fund.
THE INCREASE won't offset the
deficit, but the additional revenue will
be $25,200, said Dan White, executive
director of finance.
Some thought had been given to asking
for a 15-cent increase in lunch prices,
but that idea was rejected because
of the current economic conditions in
the Plymouth-Canton community,
White said
The administration is recommending
the following increases: elementary
lunches, from 75 to 80 cents; middle
school, 80 to 85 cents; high school, 90 to
95 cents; adult lunches, $1.45 to $>.50;
and reduced lunches from 10 cents to
20 cents.
Reduced-price lunches are for students
coming from low- and moderateincome
families in the district who
cannot afford full price for lunches.
The school district is reimbursed by the
federal government for the free and reduced-price
lunches it serves.
The reduced-price lunches are being
doubled in price because the U.S. De-
partment of Agriculture is reducing its
reimbursement for student lunches
from 18.5 to 16 cents per meal, White
said.
The reduced-price increase from 10
to 20 cents is set by government regulation,
he said.
The cafeteria program is administered
under a contractual arrangement
with the ARA Co. .
In other action Monday night, ,the
school bdard will be receiving a report
