Most of the price increases will be for five cents. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the board room at 454 S. Harvey, Plymouth. The price increases are being recommended by the Food Service Parent Advisory Committee to help offset a deficit in the district's food operation. Dr. John M. Hoben, superintendent of schools, said he also recommends the increased prices in light of a potential deficit of $88,000 in the cafeteria fund. THE INCREASE won't offset the deficit, but the additional revenue will be $25,200, said Dan White, executive director of finance. Sat. 9-6 uuiXnTii uxrixii: The administration is recommending the following increases: elementary lunches, from 75 to 80 cents; middle school, 80 to 85 cents; high school, 90 to 95 cents; adult lunches, $1.45 to $>.50; and reduced lunches from 10 cents to 20 cents. Reduced-price lunches are for students coming from low- and moderateincome families in the district who cannot afford full price for lunches. The school district is reimbursed by the federal government for the free and reduced-price lunches it serves. The reduced-price lunches are being doubled in price because the U.S. De- partment of Agriculture is reducing its reimbursement for student lunches from 18.5 to 16 cents per meal, White said. The reduced-price increase from 10 to 20 cents is set by government regulation, he said. The cafeteria program is administered under a contractual arrangement with the ARA Co. . In other action Monday night, ,the school bdard will be receiving a report from administrator Dave Rodwell on the statewide Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP) tests conducted each year. McMurray wins area post Frank McMurray, former president of the Canton Chamber of Commerce, has been elected president of the West Suburban Council of Chambers. The 11-chamber association promotes chamber unity in the west suburban metropolitan area. ''Shadowing 9 Staff photos by Gaty Caskey CEP students observe world of work National Vocational Education Week is being observed this week throughout the nation by business, industry, teachers and students. The theme of the week, "Knowhow for the Jobs of the '30s." relates to the importance of the programs offered and the dedication of the instructors and administrators. In the Plymouth-Canton Community - SERVICE School District vocational education week is being observed, in part, by a shadowing project involving Rotarians and students at the Plymouth Centennial Educational Park (CEP). Another activity is an open house at the CEP so residents may view th^ vocational education facilities at the high ;hools. IN RECENT YEARS the Rotary Cl\ib of Plymouth has worked actively to support vocational education programs in the Plymouth-Canton area. A few years ago Plymouth Rotarians worked with the Rotary Club of Canton, Plymouth and Canton chambers of commerce, and the school district to sponsor a Business-Education Forum. Out of that forum grew the concept Jody Rice and Doug Swatosh of Doug's Standard at Main and Ann Arbor Trail discuss records a business must keep. Past officials honored of "shadowing" and plans to use that technique In the school district. Under the program, Rotarians have volunteered to take a vocational student under their wing on a day's visitation to accompany them through a daily work schedule. The students spend the day "shadowing" a sponsor and learn firsthand what it is like to live a day in the life of a business person in the world of work. Some of the participants are: Larry Shaffer of Pacer Manufacturing in Canton with student Bruce Bart; Doug Swatosh of Doug's Plymouth Standard, with students Howard Brassfield and Jody Ribe; Victor Vojcek of Loc Performance Co. in Plymouth Township with student Dan Elmore; Joe Tate of Canton and Beverly McAllister with Sun Plastic Coating in Plymouth with student Kim Mendenhall; Dick Kirchgatter of Parkway Veterinary Clinic in Canton with student Gaye Kindred; and Nick Aron of the Pendleton Shop in Plymouth with student Marrianne McMastfer. Harold Gaertner, director of vocational education for the school district, said the purpose of the week's observance aid of the open house is to bring attention to the merits and accomplishments o! vocational education. He encourages residents to visit the school tnis week to view ongoing projects ami programs. The schools are open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. weekdays. Citizens blast Poole for ceremony Supervisor James Poole will continue to honor past officials for their service to Canton — but he'll do it in private. Since presenting plaques to a number of former officials at a public meeting last month, Poole has received nothing but complaints and criticism from residents. They have called Poole to hurl political accusations and disagreements at all but two of the nine persons who were publicly honored. They included four previous occupants of the supervisor's office — Noel Culbert, Harold Stein, Robert Greenstein and Phil Dingeldey; former Treasurer James Donahue; former Trustee Eugene Daley; and former planning commissioner Bart Berg Current Trustee Robert Padget received plaques for his past service on the planning commission and Economic Development Corporation. Building official Aaron Machnik was awarded a plaque for his work on the township's new computer system. "We do nice things for people, and I get chewed out," Poole told the Township Board last week. "I received nothing but bad words from people. I didn't even think people could talk like that." In the past, some retired officials received a resolution from the township in recognition of their services. Charter commission hears gripes (Continued from Page 1A) land on which they can no longer afford to grow crops. Kosteva urged "use value taxation," so that farmland can be taxed on the basis of its use, not the basis of its potential development. A charter commission member, former state Sen. William Copeland of Wyandotte, asked why Canton farmers couldn't use a state Farmland and Open Spaces Preservation Act. Kosteva replied, "PA 116 works in an area that is all farmland or where there's no population pressure, like Lenawee County or the Thumb. But where you have development pressure, as in Canton, there is no incentive for a w farmer to enter the act." * The law allows farmland to be a "banked" for 10 years in return for property Uyc breaks, but Kosteva said the 10-year period "is not a permanent solution." Asked what kind of charter powers would help Canton with its road problems, Kosteva quipped, "Probably a gift of $15 million." It brought the only laughter of the evening. Then he added more seriously, "I don't know that a charter could help us." "MY SORROW" was how Noel Culbert, supervisor of Canton from 1978- 80,, described his dealings with the Wayne County drain commissioner. "Many developers complain It costs too much to deal with Wayne County," he said. "That entire department should be abolished. "One man holds more power than the governor. You have to play ball the way he says to play ball." Culbert said county drains in Canton were so badly neglected that the township used $50,000 of its own money to clean drains "that the county should have cleaned." MICHELLE HOWARD, representing seven chapters of the League of Women Voters, urged a strong county executive and a county commission with a maximum of 15 members. Currently, the Wayne County Board of Commissioners has 27 members. Last month's ceremony was the idea of Poole and Trustee Robert Padge P(X>le had planned to hold additic taJ perernonies in honor of other persons who have held elective ar d appointed office. "Bui maybe we should just do it in private," Poole said. Maria Falkiewicz, Cantbn Township treasurer, said the county is losing np oney by failing to invest its cash in hv terest-earning accounts. "All money should be kept in a savings account," she said. She said Canton in a year earned $2 million on its invested money, a practice which, applied at the county level, could wipe out its $19 million deficit.
