First German edition. - Roald Amundson (1872-1928) had borrowed the Fram from
Nansen for a scientific voyage in the Arctic, but on hearing the news that Peary had
reached the North Pole, he switched to the Antarctic, were he would be the first. He
returned in excellent health on 26 January 1912. By contrast, although Scott and his
party reached the Pole a month later, they all died, stormbound in their tent on the
return journey. ‘Amundsen’s modest account of his extraordinary South Pole exploit
is a classic in the exploration literature’ (Rosove, Antarctica, p.13). - Fine.
