Obtaining A CDL<br />
Drivers who need a CDL must past a written test and driving test as well<br />
as tests for applicable endorsements. If <strong>the</strong> CDL is for farm-related<br />
retail operations, see “Restricted Agricultural CDL” on page 37.<br />
The Written Test<br />
Drivers who want a CDL for any class must pass a written test administered<br />
by <strong>the</strong>ir resident stateʼs bureau <strong>of</strong> motor vehicles (e.g., <strong>the</strong><br />
Indiana Bureau <strong>of</strong> Motor Vehicles) or through an approved CDL testing<br />
facility. All prospective CDL drivers must pass a general knowledge test spe-<br />
cific to <strong>the</strong> class <strong>of</strong> CDL desired: A, B, or C. Endorsement exams specific to<br />
<strong>the</strong> types <strong>of</strong> cargo <strong>the</strong> driver expects to transport must be passed as well.<br />
Restrictions based on braking systems may also apply; <strong>the</strong>y are addressed<br />
later in this document (see p. 37).<br />
The Driving Test<br />
After passing <strong>the</strong> written general knowledge and applicable endorsement<br />
exams, prospective CDL drivers must pass a driving (skills) test;<br />
drivers are required to road test a vehicle in <strong>the</strong> class in which <strong>the</strong>y need<br />
to be licensed. Potential CDL drivers have 180 days after passing <strong>the</strong> CDL<br />
endorsement tests to take <strong>the</strong> driving test at an authorized testing facility.<br />
Drivers may use a company vehicle, <strong>the</strong>ir own vehicle, or a vehicle provided<br />
by <strong>the</strong> testing facility.<br />
Potential drivers must pass all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se exam elements:<br />
• Pre-trip inspection<br />
• Coupling and uncoupling combination units (if applicable)<br />
• Use <strong>of</strong> vehicle controls and emergency equipment<br />
• Operating <strong>the</strong> vehicle in traffic<br />
• Slowing <strong>the</strong> vehicle by means o<strong>the</strong>r than using <strong>the</strong> brakes<br />
• Backing and parking<br />
