Originally an Ottoman raki distillery, this 19th century industrial complex
has been transformed into a luxury hotel. Owned by prominent Istanbul
architects Mark and Nedret Butler, the renovation has been a family
project as their daughter Yasha designed the sleek interiors. Although the
makeover was dramatic, the historical integrity of the building has been
maintained. Each room has been individually designed to showcase
the original architectural features. Enjoy refreshments on the peaceful
waterfront lawn, sample seafood in Kordon, the hotel’s restaurant or
take a private excursion on the hotel’s own launch. Sumahan is located
just outside Çengelköy, a village of wooden houses, fish restaurants
and seaside promenades – and only a 15-minute boat ride from
downtown Istanbul.

why we love it: The ever-changing image of the Bosphorus under the
shimmering Istanbul light is subtly reflected in the designer’s use of
blues, purples and grays. Like portholes in a ship, a series of windows
running the length of this suite capture bold snapshots of the river’s
expanse. With a fireplace in the living room, luxury Turkish towels and a
Hammam-style bathroom, a warm comfortable stay is ensured. The suite

why we love it: The décor of the suite is inspired by the Ottoman
Empire. Interior designer Sinan Kafadar uses a tulip motif, which
was a symbol of wealth in the Ottoman court. Tulips adorn the suite’s
handcrafted woven fabrics, bed coverings and draperies. There is a goldplated
king-size feather bed with sumptuous linens for guests’ ultimate
comfort. The suite is extensive and has a kitchenette, dining room and
living room, separate parlor and separate butler’s entrance. A decadent
Jacuzzi is surrounded by windows with superb views over Istanbul and
the Bosphorus. There is a twice-daily maid service and state-of-the-art
entertainment facility, including an interactive flat screen TV. VIP guests
