During these changing and challenging times, 

the Buffalo Grove Area Chamber of Commerce is 

committed to helping our members, all Buffalo 

Grove businesses and the Village at large. In 2010, 

the Chamber continued its community efforts 

by collecting food during Buffalo Grove Days, by 

awarding Ronald J. Jonas scholarships and hosting, 

along with Lake County Chairman David Stolman, an Employment/Survival 

Resources Fair. 

The BGACC is all about meeting and knowing people. From our 10 business 

luncheons, to our business before and after hours, to our Lunch & Learn 

Seminars, the Chamber is about promoting your business. In February 2011, the 

Chamber introduced our new website. This keeps the Chamber current with the 

state of the art in business communications by providing easy access to Buffalo 

Grove business information both for the members and people wanting to locate 

our members in person and on the Internet. In 2010, we held events to assist 

members in utilizing the premier business e-networking site: Linked-In. We 

have more such events planned and we will initiate more programs about social 

networking for businesses. 

We encourage all Buffalo Grove businesses to join the Buffalo Grove Area 

Chamber of Commerce. The chamber gives you the opportunity to promote 

your business at all Chamber events, many of which extend beyond the 

corporate limits of the village and to the community at large. 

But, we also care and give back to the community. The Chamber continues to 

award college scholarships under the banner of the Ronald J. Jonas Scholarship 

Fund and supervised by our Education Committee. The Chamber has supplied, 

through the tireless efforts of our Community Outreach Committee, the local 

food pantries by sponsoring a variety of efforts including the collection of 

food during the Buffalo Grove Days parade. And the Chamber will continue its 

efforts to assist our community. Later this year the Chamber will sponsor the 

first annual Heart of Buffalo Grove Awards - recognizing seven categories of 

volunteers in the Community. 

The Chamber encourages our residents to shop locally! It is YOU that help 

our businesses and service providers thrive in the community through your 

consistent support. Shopping locally keeps sales tax dollars within the 

community and helps the environment by keeping gas consumption down.

Although it is known that the Potowatomie Indians once lived in the Buffalo 

Grove area, the first recorded history begins with the German immigrants 

from the Alsace-Lorraine region who came to farm this land in the mid 1840s. 

Descendants of these early settlers remain in the area today. The present St. 

Mary’s Catholic Church, the Village’s most prominent landmark, was built by the 

families of these early settlers in 1899. 

Throughout the early 1900s, Buffalo Grove was a dairy farming community 

supplying the Chicago area with fresh dairy products. Farmers took their milk 

to G. B. Weidner’s cheese factory in Buffalo Grove or to the train station in 

Wheeling for the seven o’clock milk run to Chicago. Although the first concrete 

road (Dundee Road) was built around 1930, the residential development of 

the Village did not begin until the late 1950s. On March 7, 1958, the Village 

of Buffalo Grove, consisting of 42 homes and 164 people, was incorporated. 

From a population of 670 in 1960, Buffalo Grove has since grown to a current 

population of over 43,000. 

Today, Buffalo Grove is one of the finest and fastest growing communities 

in Illinois with a perfect blend of residential, retail and business. Spread 

throughout the community are 400 acres of parks featuring playgrounds, sports 

fields and picnic areas. The business parks and office centers maintain Buffalo 

Grove’s country charm with their beautifully landscaped grounds. Its diversified 

retail community contains twenty intimate shopping centers offering a wide 

variety of stores, shops and eating establishments. 

For those interested in more detailed information on the history of the Village, 

a trip to the newly renovated Buffalo Grove Park District’s Raupp Museum is 

recommended. The museum’s programs, exhibits and displays cover a variety 

of topics and historical subject matter from specifics about Buffalo Grove, its 

people and places to a general overview of life in the past. The museum is 

located at 901 Dunham Lane in Buffalo Grove. Hours of operation are Monday- 

Thursday from 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Admission is free.

agendas for all boards, commissions, and committees. 

Ga r b a G e, re C y C l i n G & ya r d W a s T e Pi C k u P 

Buffalo Grove residents have one pickup per week of regular landscape 

materials, refuse and recyclables. An additional pickup of refuse can be 

arranged by residents for an additional charge. 

Buffalo Grove recycles the following items: 

• Paper Materials–newspapers, magazines, phone books, catalogs, Chipboard 

cartons (i.e. cereal or cracker boxes), business mail, office paper, brown 

bags–Kraft paper and corrugated cardboard (flattened and large boxes cut 

into 2’ squares). 

• Plastic Type Materials–all types noted 1-7 on containers and 6-pack & 12-pack 

back bands. 

• Metal & Glass Materials–all cans (aluminum or steel/zinc), aerosol cans, all 

glass containers and aluminum foil (cleaned of all food material). 

• Non-Recyclable Materials–juice boxes, auto/truck batteries, motor oil, 

pizza boxes, paper food cartons (take-out containers), window glass, 

drinking glasses, gable-top containers (milk or juice containers), plastic bags 

and polystyrene/styrofoam.

From April 1 through November 30, yardwaste pickup is added to the once a 

week refuse/recycling schedule. The State of Illinois requires that yardwaste be 

contained in garbage cans marked with an “X” or paper recycling bags. Plastic 

bags cannot be used. 

Pa r k i n G re s T r i C T i o n s 

Parking is not permitted on Buffalo Grove residential streets from 

2:00 a.m - 6:00 a.m., unless permission is received in advance from the Police 

Department. To request permission for overnight parking, call the Police 

Department’s administrative number at (847) 459-2560. 

A parking ban is in effect on all streets after a 2-inch snowfall, until snow has 

been completely removed. 

sP r i n k l i n G re s T r i C T i o n s 

Lawn sprinkling restrictions are in effect from May 15th until September 15th. 

Sprinkling is allowed on an even/odd schedule according to your address, 

except during the period from 12:00 noon - 6:00 p.m. Sprinkling is not allowed 

during that 6 hour period.

Dog and cat licenses are required by the Village for animals over 4 months of 

age. Yearly tags are available at the Village Hall and proof of Rabies Vaccination 

is required.

A State Law regarding curfew is in effect for children under the age of 17. 

Curfew hours are: 

Sunday-Thursday 11:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. 

Friday & Saturday 12:00 Midnight - 6:00 a.m. 

Please note: The driver’s license of a child under the age of 17 is invalid after 

curfew. This is an arrestable offense.

Illinois State law prohibits smoking in all enclosed public places and places of 

employment. Smoking regulations are not regulated in a private dwelling unit, 

unless the dwelling is also used as a licensed childcare, adult care facility, health 

care facility, nursing, long term care or assisted living facility. The regulations 

set forth that it is unlawful to smoke within 20 feet of an open air dining area; 

within 20 feet of any public entrance; and within 20 feet of an operable window 

or ventilation air intake. For further information about the law, please contact 

the Village Manager’s Office.

Effective January 1, 2007, the State legislature passed the Illinois carbon 

Monoxide Alarm Detector Act, requiring every dwelling unit in Illinois to have 

at least one approved carbon monoxide alarm in an operating condition 

within 15 feet of every room used for sleeping purposes. Alarms can be battery 

powered, plug-in with battery back-up or wired into the AC power line with 

a secondary battery back-up. If a structure contains more than one “dwelling 

unit,” an alarm must be installed within 15 feet of every sleeping room in each 

“dwelling unit.” The owner must supply and install all required alarms. A 

landlord must ensure that the alarms are operable on the date of initiation of a 

lease. The tenant is responsible for testing and maintaining the alarm after the 

lease commences.

The Indian Trails Public Library District is a welcoming library with 

a variety of peaceful reading areas for adults, teens and children 

and more than 1,100 programs offered annually. The library is a WiFi 

zone (wireless accessible) that is handicap accessible. Make use of 

our preschool activities area, quiet study rooms, community meeting 

rooms and more than 50 PC and MAC computer stations. Indian Trails 

Library also offers 24-hour WiFi outside of the building in designated 

parking spaces to help provide resources to community members 

beyond regular library hours. Collection includes more than 266,000 

items including books, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, audiobooks, CDs, 

CD-ROMs, DVDs, video games, periodicals, selected world languages 

collections, citizenship preparation, and Easy English materials. 

Indian Trails Library cardholders can access reserves, renewals, 

eBooks, online reference and more than 20 reference databases 

and homework help via the library’s website, where you can also 

signup to receive our monthly eNewsletter. Library drop boxes are 

conveniently located at Dominick’s at the corner of Lake Cook and 

Arlington roads and at the Buffalo Grove Park District’s Alcott Center. 

Entertaining and educational programs for children, teens and 

adults include craft and gaming programs, book discussion groups, 

story times, food programs, computer instruction classes, music 

programs, multi-cultural celebrations, fine arts displays and much 

more! The library staff provides free delivery and pick-up of materials 

to homebound patrons. Access to special materials for the blind and 

physically handicapped is provided through the library. 

Community residents are encouraged to support the library’s efforts 

by becoming involved in our Volunteer Program, the Friends of the 

Library, the Children’s Advocates, or the Foundation for the Indian 

Trails Public Library District.

Buffalo Grove offers the advantages of countryside living, with convenient 

access to the regional transportation networks and services. The Village is just 

30 miles from the City of Chicago, 15 miles from O’Hare International Airport 

and 5 miles from Chicago Executive Airport (formerly Palwaukee.) Two federal 

and four state highways, four railroads, and six bus routes serve Buffalo Grove. 

Co m m u T e r ra i l se r v i Ce 

North Central Service offers nine inbound and ten outbound trains each 

weekday. The North Central Service includes the only O’Hare transfer stop in 

the railway system. The Buffalo Grove station is located on Commerce Court 

just south of Deerfield Parkway. Other nearby stations on the line include 

Prairie View just north of Route 22 and Wheeling just south of Dundee Road. 

With the acquisition of the EJ&E by the Canadian National Railway Company, 

Buffalo Grove residents and businesses will experience a significant reduction 

of freight rail traffic through Buffalo Grove starting in 2009. 

Union Pacific Northwest has stations in Palatine, Arlington Heights, Arlington 

Park, and Mount Prospect. 

• Route 234 serves Buffalo Grove along Milwaukee Avenue and Dundee Road 

and travels to Mount Prospect and the Des Plaines rail station. 

Milwaukee District North has stations in Deerfield, on Lake Cook Road and 

Northbrook. 

Skokie Swift RTA line station in Skokie. 

• Pace Route 626 services the business areas from Buffalo Grove to Northbrook 

Court with express through to the Skokie Swift station.

Pace provides numerous routes for intersuburban travel, as well as connection 

to numerous train stations.

Explore the beautiful tree-lined trails, travel along the three golf courses, use 

the trail system to shop throughout the community, and explore the more than 

400 acres of parks and open space throughout the Village. Buffalo Grove’s trail 

system consists of over 45 miles of 8 to 10-foot multi-use paths and sidewalks. 

The Village works with other communities and agencies to continually improve 

the trail system by linking to other bike path systems. We invite you to bike, 

walk or run along the trail system. Also, look for exciting events to promote the 

trails and bicycle safety, such as the Bike with a Cop program, and the Annual 

Police Department Bicycle Rodeo, coordinated in May annually.
