RESEARCH TIP: LIBRARY RESEARCH<br />

Journals: Key sociology journals are the American Sociological Review, American Journal<br />

of <strong>Sociology</strong>, and the Annual Review of <strong>Sociology</strong>. You can access them electronically<br />

through the HOLLIS catalog<br />

How <strong>to</strong> access library materials:<br />

• The Harvard College Library ma<strong>in</strong> page (http://hcl.harvard.edu) provides<br />

quick l<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>to</strong> the Hollis catalog system, E-resources, and the Search function<br />

• The Hollis catalog will lead you <strong>to</strong> books, journal subscriptions, and digital<br />

copies of books and journals as well as l<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>to</strong> the E-resources for f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g<br />

particular articles<br />

• The Search function on hcl.harvard.edu is a great and lesser known resource.<br />

Click the "Search" field <strong>in</strong> the upper right and fill <strong>in</strong> the radio but<strong>to</strong>n for<br />

Google Scholar. Then type <strong>in</strong> the keywords for your <strong>to</strong>pic. The results page<br />

provides l<strong>in</strong>ks <strong>to</strong> the resources owned by Harvard (journals and books) which<br />

you can click <strong>to</strong> directly access the source.<br />

• If you use the Firefox web browser, Harvard has a great plug-<strong>in</strong> that <strong>in</strong>tegrates<br />

the library system with the browser itself. The HUL LibX <strong>to</strong>olbar allows you<br />

<strong>to</strong> search the Hollis catalog, E-Journal list, E-Resource list, Citation L<strong>in</strong>ker and<br />

Google Scholar. The plug-<strong>in</strong> will also work with search results at Amazon.<br />

com, Barnes and Noble, the New York Times Book Review, and other search<br />

resources that l<strong>in</strong>k you directly <strong>to</strong> Harvard’s resources. Visit http://lib.harvard.<br />

edu/<strong>to</strong>ols/libx.html for more <strong>in</strong>formation.<br />

• The Department of <strong>Sociology</strong> has relationships with several research librarians<br />
