Fostering Competitiveness for South-Med Products<br />
Operation 1: Workshops on producers<br />
responsibility EU directives:<br />
REACH, RoHS and C&L<br />
International and National experts presented the EU<br />
directives (REACH, C&L, RoHS) to enterprises, local<br />
stakeholders and consultants who will make initial contacts<br />
with SME’s in the framework of this initiative.<br />
The participants were introduced to the Overview of<br />
the Global Regulatory Frameworks related to Chemicals<br />
Management, Clean and New Technologies for<br />
Chemicals and Chemical Waste Management in Industry,<br />
Hazard Communication: GHS-Labeling and<br />
Safety Data Sheet.<br />
This operation is considered as the first and essential<br />
step in assisting SME’s to manufacture products<br />
which are compliant with European environmental<br />
directives, and how to comply with those directives in<br />
order to learn about major export barrier and thereby<br />
gain more potential for export to the Europe market.<br />
During the workshop, a MOU was signed between the<br />
LCPC and Federation of Egyptian Industries, Environmental<br />
Compliance Office and Sustainable Development<br />
with the aim of assisting, promoting and implementing<br />
sustainable application of Cleaner Production,<br />
Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency in order to increase<br />
the productivity of industry and reduce risks to<br />
people and the environment in Lebanon and Egypt.<br />
Operation 2: Regional Workshop for<br />
Train the Trainers on EU Directives<br />
The international expert Dr. Helmut Fleig trained the<br />
ENCPC, CMPP and LCPC experts on the European<br />
directives.<br />
The experts will attract local SMEs, and provide training<br />
and assistance on how to become compliant with<br />
REACH, C&L, and RoHS.<br />
The training took place on the 20 th – 21 st June 2010,<br />
Cairo, Egypt.<br />
V. GRECO Initiative<br />
GRECO is a Mediterranean initiative designed to<br />
promote green competitiveness in the region by<br />
demonstrating the fabulous economic benefit that<br />
the environment can offer companies.<br />
Launching GRECO Initiative Green<br />
Competitiveness in Lebanon:<br />
The Ministry of Environment (MoE) and the <strong>Industrial</strong><br />
<strong>Research</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> (IRI) in collaboration with<br />
the Lebanese Cleaner Production Center (LCPC)<br />
and the Regional Activity Center for Cleaner Production<br />
in Spain (RAC/CP) organized the National<br />
Forum on:" Best Available Techniques: Mechanisms<br />
to enhance the Green Competitiveness in Lebanon"<br />
and it took place on Tuesday 26th of January 2010 at<br />
the Movenpick Hotel, Beirut, Lebanon.<br />
During the forum, IRI, LCPC, and RAC/CP signed<br />
a Memorandum of Understanding valid for three<br />
years, and agreed on setting up a strong cooperation<br />
framework between them in order to promote the<br />
GRECO Initiative among companies in Lebanon.<br />
Awareness Seminars on Green Competitiveness<br />
On the purpose of disseminating the Green Compet-<br />
itiveness concept, the LCPC in collaboration with<br />
RAC/CP Spain held a series of awareness seminars<br />
on green competitiveness – GRECO program which<br />
tackled mainly the industrial sector in Lebanon in<br />
order to select 5 companies to execute Case Studies<br />
in Lebanon.<br />
During the seminars, the participants were introduced<br />
to CP concepts and methodologies,Green<br />
Competitiveness – GRECO Initiative in Lebanon.<br />
The first seminar took place on the 24th of June 2010,<br />
at the IRI premises, the second one was organized<br />
on the 25th of August 2010 in Hasbaya, South Lebanon,<br />
the third was organized on the 23rd of November<br />
2010 in Zahleh, Bekaa, West Lebanon.<br />
