Resistance spot welds<br />

Resistance spot welding requires access to both sides of the joint.<br />

The weld symbol is centred <strong>on</strong> the reference line (see Fig. 12.1).<br />

An example of the applicati<strong>on</strong> of the welding symbol is shown in<br />

Fig. 12.2. Under the heading ‘Strength’, AWS A2.4-98 specifies that<br />

the strength of a spot weld shall be indicated by a number quoting<br />

pounds or newt<strong>on</strong>s placed in fr<strong>on</strong>t of the weld symbol. The strength<br />

of a spot weld is related to its size and it is questi<strong>on</strong>able whether<br />

mechanical properties should form part of a welding symbol. The<br />

purpose of this opti<strong>on</strong> and for whom the informati<strong>on</strong> is intended are<br />

not clear.<br />
