of the contract, as the present status of such
rate in connection with the rates from other districts,
as determined by the late decision of the
Interstate Commerce Commission, is recognized
as in effect and continuing until revised by that
authority. The opening of this large virgin field
by the Pittsburgh Coal Co. and the opportunities
offered to other owners of like property to be directly
reached by the extension of the Montour
road and by its branches will meet the demands
for expected increase in the coal tonnage from the
Pittsburgh distiict for a long period in the future.
While the contract has no date for going into
operation and no contracts have been let for actual
construction, yet it is stated that the necessity
for providing for tonnage maintenance on the
part of the Pittsburgh Coa! Co. is such that active
work on the line will not long be deferred.
THE UNITED COAL COMPANY IN SPLENDID
NEW QUARTERS—OPENING THREE NEW
MINES.
The large new general offices of the United Coal
Co. in the First National Bank building, Pittsburgh,
were opened last month. The headquarters
have been transferred from the former location
in the Bank for Savings building. The new
offices, are much larger than the space occupied
in the Bank for Savings building and serve as an
indication of the rapid growth of the company
since its organization in 1902. At that time it
occupied three small 100ms in the Bank for Savings
building, while it now has one entire floor
in one of Pittsburgh's largest office buildings. It
has grown rapidly and is now one of the largest
bituminous mining and marketing organizations
in the country.
The company's mines and those of its subsidiaries
are as follows: Ella, Patterson, Naomi, Tunnelton,
Rich Hill, Edna No. 1, Edna No. 2, Three
Forks field, Jerome, Orenda, Elk Lick.
The total area of coal is about 35,000 acres and
the total daily capacity of the mines, including
the capacity of three new openings now beingmade,
is about 25,000 tons. Thiough the ownership
of 1,000 steel cars, 150 river barges and other
transportation equipments, the company is reasonably
assured of freight facilities at all times.
Consul General John H. Snodgrass, Moscow,
Russia, under date of Nov. 12 reports that the
Russian government has not sufficient coal on
hand and the Ministry of Ways at St. Petersburg
has been authorized to import 40,000,000 poods
(pood=36,112 pounds). Following this information
tenders from American producers are invited.

PREPARATIONS BEING MADE FOR
BIG ADVERTISING CONVENTION.
The first world-wide convention in the interest
of advertising will be held in Baltimore, June 8 to
13, 1913. It will be the ninth annual convention
of the Associated Advertising Clubs of America,
with international affiliations.
A special invitation to attend this convention
has been extended by the Advertising club of Baltimore
through the consular service of the Department
of State, which is co-operating with the Baltimore
organization, to advertising clubs, commercial
bodies, newspapers, trade publications,
magazines, business concerns and agencies in all
countries.
The governor of Maryland has granted the use
of tlie great armory building of the Fifth Regiment
Maryland National Guard.
President Edward J. Shay, of the Advertising
club of Baltimore, has returned recently from a
missionary trip abroad, having visited the larger
cities in 18 countries, and in which he extended
to advertising organizations, publishers, agencies
and commercial bodies a personal invitation to
attend this convention.
The German Association of Publicity Specialists
has arranged to send a special commission to
this convention to study American methods of advertising
and to get in personal touch with representative
business men interested in advertising
attending from other nations. The Thirty club
of London will be represented by a strong delegation.
Organizations in Italy, France and Spain
have also engaged to send delegations, and most
of the countries of Latin America are expected to
be well represented.
One of the interesting and instructive features
of the convention will be the Exhibit of Advertising,
covering upwards of 30,000 square feet of
wall space and a corresponding amount of floor
space. Included in this exhibit will be displays
of advertising as employed by business concerns
in different countries. Already elaborate exhibits
have been promised from Germany, Russia, France,
Belgium ancl Italy. There will be shown not
fewer than three national campaigns of advertisers
of the United States, exemplifying their
various forms of publicity.
This exhibit will line both sides of the great
Armory hall. Space in the exhibit of advertising
will not be for sale, the examples of advertising
in different lines being chosen for the educational
value of each.
While the Baltimore convention is to be devoted
more largely to constructive and educational worl;
than any preceding national meeting of this organization,
the matter of entertainment will not
