edition’s volunteer
spotlight falls on
a professional volunteer,
Rene Michalak.
What qualifies him
as a professional,
you ask? Well, at
his day job, he’s the
Program Manager
for Volunteer Red

Deer, a position that
affords him a unique
perspective on the
breadth and depth of
volunteerism in the
Red Deer community.
volunteers contribute, where those
contributions are needed and why they are such a significant
markyourcalendar
resource in the city’s success. After a day at the office, Rene
fills his life with other volunteer endeavors, like fulfilling the
coordinator role in ReThink Red Deer and sitting on the City’s
Environment Committee.
Rene also chairs the Environmental Policy Subcommittee
at the Chamber, steering it through a complex collection of
ideas, issues and positions. He’s well grounded for that role,
having considerable personal experience in raising issues and
environmental awareness in the Red Deer region. “I’m looking
to be the sustainability champion,” he says. He believes the
technology already exists to solve the problems we face. All
that’s lacking, he says, is the political will to use it.
One of the initiatives he promoted was Garbage-Free Month,
a concept he saw on CBC and decided to ‘give it a go’. He was
impressed with the challenge and also the result – an awareness
that we really don’t need to produce garbage, especially in the
volumes we currently leave at the curb.
The Chamber is fortunate to have Rene at the head of the
environmental table and it bodes well for the policies we’ll see
in the future.
