continued from page 4 Strategies includes everything from increasing high-school completion rates to developing pools of labour that are typically under represented in the Alberta workforce, such as Aboriginal people, older workers, and people with disabilities. It includes helping new Albertans put their skills to work, by helping them settle and get their foreign credentials recognized. The government has increased its training budget to help laidoff Albertans go back to school, upgrade their skills, and earn their credentials. And, the government has increased labour mobility by signing the Trade, Investment and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA) with British Columbia. The agreement, which came into effect on April 1, enables workers, like plumbers, welders, and nurses, to work in either province and go where the work is without having to worry about getting licensed in both provinces. The agreement also provides seamless access to a larger range of opportunities for businesses and recognizes corporate registration in both provinces. These strategies will help increase the incomes of Albertans, reduce the strain on business, and decrease our dependence on skilled foreign workers when the economy picks up again. Immigration and temporary foreign workers will continue to play an important role in meeting Alberta’s workforce needs, but as always, the government will follow the policy of Albertans. What are you doing to prepare your business for the next labour shortage? Here are some ideas: 6 Inform Determine what your current staffing demand is, how close to retirement your staff are, if other industries compete for the same staff you need, and what your current turnover and vacancy rates are. Figure out your future staffing needs. Consider if you plan to expand your business or if new technology will affect your staffing needs. Attract Good business people know to buy low and sell high. Use this slowdown as an opportunity to attract the best people. Develop Invest in your people—especially your junior staff—and talk to them about the future. Training junior staff to take on senior roles builds loyalty and means you’ll have the skilled senior people you need when the economy picks up. Retain Retaining your top performers is probably one of the most important investments you can make in your company. Experts estimate the cost of replacing an employee ranges between 25 and 200 per cent of the employee’s annual salary depending on the position, the current labour market and the amount of on-the-job training required.
