LEERS TO THE EDITOR
Highland Cemetery
is in good hands
Dear Editor,
A long overdue thank you goes to
Art Cox, Sonny Etherton and Sherry
Purkey for all their hard work keeping
our Highland Cemetery so wellgroomed.
It certainly shows all the pride
they take in their jobs and gives us a
beautiful place for us to pay respect
to our loved ones that are there. We
are fortunate to see it every day and
know that they start working very
early and are busy all day.
Unfortunately, there are those that
ignore the well-marked signs “No
Dogs Allowed” that walk their dogs
after the hard-working crew leaves,
thinking that the requests from the
cemetery district do not apply to
them. There are several of us that
keep an eye on this beautiful property
and are very disappointed that respect
is not shown to the cemetery district,
much less to the dedication and hard
work that Art, Sherry and Sonny have
shown in keeping the grounds clean
and manicured. Most are responsible
dog owners, but to those few that
take their dogs for a walk in the
cemetery maybe they will think about
finding a place on their own property,
or if they walk along the streets that
they will take the proper supplies to
clean up after their pet.
Once again, thanks to Art and the
crew that do such an incredible job.
Dear Editor,
In the early morning hours of
June 7 my husband Shayne and my
son Bo left Rangely to go to Rifle to
pick up newspapers. This is a job my
husband has done for over nine years.
This morning would be the start
of a big nightmare. About 12:45 a.m.
my husband swerved to miss an elk
and ended up wrecking our car. Bo
was hurt, but not bad. Unfortunately,
Shayne had some severe injuries. Bo
was able to get out of the car and get
Shayne’s cell phone. Bo then called
for help. Bo kept his head and is our
first hero in a list of heroes. Bo, you
did a great job and we are extremely
proud of you. We want to send huge
thank you to Mike Zadra, Mike
Cushman, Andy Lucero, Andy
Shaffer and everyone else on the
Rangely rescue crew, including all
the ambulance personnel, city and
county police, and CSP Trooper
Patterson. Your quick and efficient
work kept Shayne and Bo safe and
comfortable. The doctors and nurses
at Rangely District Hospital are next
on the list. You all are great and
work well as a team. You worked
quickly, got Bo checked out and
released and got Shayne ready to be
flown to Denver. Two more flight
doctors and a pilot deserve big thankyous
also. A special thank you goes
out to Josh Allred for everything you
did for Shayne in the E.R. You made
him laugh and you made the situation
bearable. Once Shayne made it to
Denver Health Hospital we met even
more great people. The surgeons put
Shayne’s leg back together and the
nurses (all of them from ICU, stepdown,
main floor and PT) should be
proud of the great job they do. Not
just for the patient, but also being so
open and helpful to the families.
Thank You to all that were involved
in Shayne and Bo’s care.
Thank you just does not seem
strong enough; please know we are
extremely grateful for all you did.
Now that those thank yous are covered
we need to say thanks to some
other people. George and Jackie
Fortunato — you two are angels
directly from heaven. Jolene called
you at 1 a.m. and you were there in
minutes. You went far beyond anything
we could have asked for. You
were and are amazing, and we feel
truly blessed to have you in our lives.
Vicki Ambrose, Michael Cowen, and
the Denver Newspaper Agency —
thank you for taking over the hauling
and delivery of the papers in Rangely.
We didn’t know what would happen
with our customers and you kept it all
together. Heather and Lacie — you
took over the paper route when Vicki
could no longer do it. You guys rock!
Mike and Heather Zadra — you two
are the best friends anyone could ask
for. You came through with food and
care for our kids. Jolene did not have
to worry about the kids and was able
to stay in Denver with Shayne the
whole time. We love you guys. Lee
and Karen Stanley — thank you for
all your help getting the supplies
needed for the house that would
allow Shayne to come home. He feels
better just being back. Bob and
Phyllis Fairchild — your cards really
made Shayne’s day. Your thoughts
and prayers made us all feel loved.
The Herald Times — thank you for
your card and your concern and
thank you to Jeff for the articles he
wrote about Shayne and the accident.
I have had many people come up to
me and tell me they learned of the
accident and how Shayne was doing
because of these articles.
We’re sure we have missed someone,
but please know it was not
intentional. We appreciate everything
from everyone. We could not ask to
live in a better community. Shayne is
home now, after two weeks in the
hospital, but he has a long recovery
ahead. If you have a moment call or
stop by and say hi. He would love
the company, since he will be homebound
for at least the next eight
weeks. Again thank you to all.
Meeker board OKs
$6 million budget
By AMIE MERSMANN
amie@theheraldtimes.com
MEEKER I Facing a revenue
shortfall of more than $400,000, the
Meeker School Board approved a
budget of more than $6 million last
week.
“In looking at what we projected
and where we are, we are going to be
short of what our projection was,” said
outgoing Superintendent Dan Evig,
who is retiring. The June 16 board
meeting was his last.
The primary reason for the shortfall
is revenue is down from the state.
The district faces a $438,000 deficit.
The administration will present a recommendation
to the board to resolve
the revenue issue.
Evig discussed options available
to the administrative team. One option
is to eliminate teaching or staff positions.
Another option is to pull funds
from the capital reserve.
Speaking of the administrative
team, Evig said, “I trust their judgment.”
The revenue issue should change
significantly once the district receives
the Mineral Lease and PILT (Payment
in Lieu of Taxes) funding. The preliminary
budget is a work in progress,
until the official deadline in October.
In other business, the board
approved a new reduced rate for summer
transportation. A school-sponsored
group can travel in a small vehicle
at $1 per mile, and in a bus at $1.50
per mile, plus driver costs. The
reduced rate may be used up to a total
of 700 miles. Anything above this
ceiling will be at a higher rate.
An addendum to a Colorado
Department of Local Affairs grant was
4-H NEWS
submitted to assist with funding of a
new road to replace the existing Ute
Road. The original proposal, which
was endorsed by the town of Meeker,
Rio Blanco County and the Eastern
Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation
and Park District was intended to
improve the existing Ute Road. After
an extensive traffic study was completed
by the town of Meeker, it was
determined a new road be constructed,
almost doubling the original cost projection.
Other business items included the
approval of a journalism course that
will be offered as an English elective
to all four grades at the high school.
English teacher Kathleen Sullivan
Kelley presented a “highly disciplined
program” that will split the responsibility
of a newspaper among the students.
Also approved was a policy
requiring healthy beverages offered
for sale to students, which will be in
compliance with the state Board of
Education’s nutritional standards.
New hires for the district include:
Roger Barnes, bus driver; Angela
Urenda, consumer and family studies
teacher; and Meg Pfau, half-time business
teacher. Pfau is the wife of new
Superintendent Doug Pfau and previously
taught technology at Grand
Valley High School in Parachute.
In Evig’s last board meeting
before retirement he wanted to “publicly
thank everyone on the board,
principals ... I have truly, truly enjoyed
it and know that the kids will be well
served in the future. It’s just been awesome
and I really appreciate it.”
Doug Pfau, who had been the
superintendent at De Beque, will
begin his new duties June 29.
cemetery. The group made committees
to plan sheep lead for the fair.
The club has to donate $50 to the
fair board to put sawdust in the
show ring for the fair.
Club members will clean up the
ring after the steer show.
The club broke even at the 4-H
Carnival.
There is no pre-fair record book
check this year.
The next meeting will be held
July 14 at 7 p.m. at the fairgrounds.
