Rector’s forward
Succeeding the Engineering Institute that was been functioning since 1972, the
„Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad, enlarged its activity in May 18 th 1990, establishing
new specializations that came into direct relationship with economic environment and
regional traditional professions. As a result over
90% of the University graduates are working in
the fi eld and honor our institution.
All 38 University specializations: Technical,
Economical, Sciences, Humanistic, Educational,
Social Work, Sport and Design are in agreement
with European Union and U.S.A. academic
standards.
Since 1999, The European Credit Transfer
System (ECTS) has been introduced, making

possible for the students to choose a direction of
study according with their expectations and labour market development. The ECTS
assure recognition of their studies in European Union Universities, for our students
as well as for foreign students which are study in here, when they turn back home.
The strategy of our University requires a dynamic management, a quality management,
focusing over the true values of the humanity.
For the last few years, the „Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad, has gained a real
prestige, being recognized in the Romanian academic community, due to the efforts of
the academic staff, the educational quality and the fi rst for knowledge achievement.

Presentation the City of Arad
Arad county is situated in the western part of Romania, representing the main Romania’s entrance gate from
Western Europe.
With an area of 7650 square kilometers, this county holds 3.2% of the total area of the country, the sixth
biggest county of Romania.
The capital of the county is the city of Arad with 200,000 inhabitants.
The city of Arad is an important industrial centre and holds
3 to 5% of our national production, mainly centred on: machinetool
building, textiles, wood processing, leather goods, footwear,
food stuffs and many others.
The city of Arad is the fi rst important city when entering Romania
from the Central Europe.
Administration: the capital of the county
Geographical position: in the West fi elds, on the shores of the
river Mureş.
Population: 185,000 inhabitants
Altitude: 116.5 km
Climate: temperate medium temperatures, in summer +21 °C, in winter -1°C.
Nowadays the local authorities imply actively in the process of reforms and promote the social - economic
development of the county by encouraging foreign investments. The county has a strategic geographical position,
being the main entrance gate in Romania from the European Union, offering social and economic stability,
numerous foreign companies having established business in Arad, mainly in the Curtici Arad Free Zone. It has
the advantage of the possibilities to combine foreign capital with other productive factors as well as an adequate
structure. The favorable position of the zone is a long term trump, an important advantage because it is situated
between the railways lien that connects Romania to occidental Europe and the Middle East, through Hungary and
the road that connects the town Curtici with Arad, thus securing a rapid access to the zone and to the international
airport of Arad.

Background and presentation of the University
The „Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad is a state higher education institution, accredited and acknowledged
by ARACIS as presenting a „high degree of confi dence”, continuing the tradition of university education in
the Arad area which started with the: Theology Institute (1822), the Livestock and Veterinary Medicine Faculty
(1947), the Engineering Institute (1972).
The „Aurel Vlaicu” University came into being following decision nr.5 67&1990 issued by the Romanian
Government, under the name of „Higher education Institute” and having one faculty the Faculty of Engineering,
with the following profi les and specializations: Mechanics (technology of machine building; equipment and
technology of welding; rolling equipment for railway); Textiles-leather (spinning and weaving; knitwear and
ready-made clothes); Chemistry ( chemical fi nishing of textiles ); Food Technology (food technology). In 1991,
following Order no. 4894/ 1991 of the Ministry of National Education, the new denomination of the institution
has became „Aurel Vlaicu” University.
Beginning with the academic year 1991-1992, the University diversifi ed its educational offer with a new
faculty the Faculty of Theology and in 1993 the Faculty of Engineering changed its name in the Faculty of
Engineering and Economic Studies as two economic specializations have started their activity: Finance -
Insurance and fi nancing control and accounting expertise. In 1999 the faculty re-organized in two faculties: the
Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Economic Sciences. In 2002 Faculty of Food Engineering, Tourism and
Environmental protection was established.
In 1991, following Order no. 4894/ 1991 of the Ministry of National Education, the new denomination of the
institution has became „Aurel Vlaicu” University.
Beginning with the academic year 1991-1992, the University diversifi ed its educational offer with a new
faculty the Faculty of Theology and in 1993 the Faculty of Engineering changed its name in the Faculty of
Engineering and Economic Studies as two economic specializations have started their activity: Finance -
Insurance and fi nancing control and accounting expertise. In 1999 the faculty re-organized in two faculties: the
Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Economic Sciences. In 2002 Faculty of Food Engineering, Tourism and
Environmental protection was established.
The University benefi ts from a highly trained academic staff and high quality endowments for didactic and
scientifi c activities. The University is structured now in 9 Faculties and 12 Departments, having more than: 15.394
students; 477 academic staff, over 43,518 m 2 of educational premises, course and seminar halls, computerized
laboratories:
The Academic Curricula, for all the Faculties are connected with European Credits Transfer System (ECTS)
since 1999 and nowadays the „Aurel Vlaicu” University Systems respects the Bologna Process, so that Diplomas
as well as periods of study may be recognized all over EU.

The Bureau for Communitarian
Programmes (BCP)
The objectives of BCP are to set up the co-operation between European Univers Academic entities in order
to provide to students and to teaching staff of „Aurel Vlaicu University the opportunity to be part of the European
Science and Culture. BCP carried out, on bases of Bilateral Agreements, the mobility of the students and teaching
staff more than 10 European Countries. In the same time BCP achieves contacts with European Universities for
structuring the Academic Curricula of our University into the ECT.

To apply for an Erasmus study period at „Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad, the students must send the following

The Erasmus Application deadline is usually the 30 th of June for the winter semester and the 30 th of November
for the spring semester.
Changes to Learning Agreement should be done in the fi rst month of stay. For this purpose, the second page
of the learning agreement should be fi lled in. The document, having signatures of the Faculty coordinator should
be brought to the Bureau for Communitarian Programmes which is responsible to forward it to the student’s home
university for consent and signature.

Romanian Language Courses
All Erasmus students have the opportunity to attend Romanian language classes within “Aurel Vlaicu”
University of Arad. The courses are structured on two levels: A1 and A2. The course starts at the beginning of the
academic year and ends in June. Students that attend courses in our university for only one semester can sit the
exam at the end of the semester.
They can also obtain an internationally recognized certifi cate ECL (European Consortium of Languages)
after having passed an international examination, hosted by our university.
Further information can be obtained in room 91 or 92, second fl oor, M building.

Academic Calendar
The academic year is divided in two semesters.
The winter semester starts on the 1st of October and lasts 14 weeks and fi nishes in the end of January.
The spring semester starts in February and lasts 14 weeks, till the end of May.
Usually the examination period for the fi rst semester occurs in January/ February and in June for the second
semester.

Access to the University
The Rector’s offi ce, the Headquarters of the Faculties, the Students Residence and the Canteen of the
University can be easily reached from the Airport or from the Railway Station as followed:
From the Arad Airport. By the Agency’s bus to the Tarom Agency, situated downtown and from there to:
1. Rector’s offi ce: on foot, at about 400 m to the East (towards City Hall), on the Revolution Boulevard,
or by tram (any number, from Theater Tram Station), one station, towards the City Hall.
2. Faculty of Food Engineering, Tourism and Environmental Protection, Faculty of Exact Sciences,
Faculty of Engineering Faculty of Humanistic Sciences, Faculty of Educational Sciences and

The Faculty of Engineering was set up in 1990,
together with the University, as the successor of the
Engineering Institute which has been functioning
since 1972.
The Faculty of Engineering comprises eight
long-term specializations and fi ve master programs.
All specializations have been authorized and

have daily courses lasting four years.
Aims of the degrees are to furnish specialists
with skills and knowledge of scientifi c nature,
to enable them to face the different demands of
modern equipment and new technologies.
The educational process and the scientifi c
research activities take place in 2 buildings
having modern laboratories such as: laboratory for
Computer aided Engineering, laboratory for Material
Endurance, laboratory for Artifi cial Intelligence,
Microsystems laboratory, laboratory for Industrial
Informatics, laboratory for Car Maintenance and
laboratories for Textile Technologies.

The Faculty of Food Engineering, Tourism
and Environment Protection of the Aurel Vlaicu
University was founded in the year 2002 according
to the Government Decision 410/25.04. 2002.
Initially, between 1990 and 2002, the profi le Food
Engineering and Environment Protection functioned
within the Chair for Chemical Sciences and Food
Technologies from the Engineering Faculty of the
Aurel Vlaicu University.
In 2010 a number of 1123 students study in the
faculty under the guidance of 35 full and associate
professors. The faculty has today several University
studies with license degree and Master’s degree
programmes.
The research takes place within the Centre for
Chemistry and Technological Researches and within
the Student’s Debating Societies and the papers

The Faculty of Economic Science
The Economic Studies Faculty within the
„Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad, situated on
the Revolution’s Avenue 77, was set up in 1999,
but economic specializations have already existed
since 1993, within the Faculty of Engineering and
Economic Sciences.
The institution’s main targets and goals are:
preparing economists with university studies at
the European level for different economic fi elds
of activity and for teaching purposes; forming
specialists with high adaptation capacity and
professional mobility; promoting the progress and
the social modernization; performing scientifi c

The Faculty of Orthodox Theology
The Faculty of Orthodox Theology functions
within the Aurel Vlaicu „University since 1991,
when, after four decades of interruption, the
tradition of theological education has been reestablished,
as the theological education in Arad,
had been functioning uninterrupted from 1822 to
1948.
The Theological Institute from Arad was
established during the Enlightenment cultural
reform initiated by the Habsburg Empire In 1822 the
foundation of clerical schools în Arad, Timisioara
and Vrset was decided, and from 1825 the institute
from Arad has became the Theological Academy
which has been functioning till 1948, when it was
abusively closed by the communist regime.

In 1998 the faculty has been accredited by the
National Council for Academic Evaluation and
Accreditation. Starting with the academic year
2001-2002, the faculty offers open distance learning
courses for monarchs, priests and theological

The Faculty of Exact Sciences is a perfect
combination of high quality of teaching with high
tech, having two bachelor’s degree: Informatics
and Math-Informatics, and a master’s degree:

Faculty of Humanist and Social Science
The Faculty of Social and Humanistic Sciences
has begun its activity in 2003, having at that time
fi ve long term specializations: Romanian English,
Special Psycho-pedagogy, Social Work, Public
Administration and Journalism. Since the academic
year 2005/ 2006, the specializations Social Work
and Special Psycho-pedagogy have moved to the
Faculty of Education Sciences. Beginning with the
academic year 2006/2007 the Faculty will have a
new specialization: History, Didactical Pentecostal
Theology and Community Police. All of these
specializations have been authorized and accredited
by the National Council for Academic Evaluation
and Accreditation.
The Faculty has 3 year daily courses. At the
end of their studies, the graduates sit an exam and
they are Bachelors of the specialization they have
attended. The have the right to be Romanian/ English
teachers, translators, interpreters, public clerks,
journalists.The Faculty has also a Department of
Foreign Languages. The Department coordi nates
all foreign language classes of the University. The
students can choose between English, French and
German in the fi rst four semesters of study. Before

The Faculty of Educational Science,
Social Work and Psychology
The Faculty of Educational Sciences, Social
Work and Psychology has been established in 2005
on the background of the former University College
for Teacher Training (set up in 1998). The Faculty
provides four main specializations: Psychology:
The pedagogy of primary and preschool education
- within this specialization the future educators
for preschool and primary school are formed. The
special psycho-pedagogy is a specialization for the
workers in the special educational system orientated
on children with special needs, a strong emphasis
being put on the inclusive education. The social
work - specialization covers a constant demand
on the social fi eld for qualifi ed workers in relation
with disadvantaged social groups. At the end of the
study period the students obtain a Bachelor Degree
and they can attend different Master Programmes.
Other programme offered by the faculty is the
continuing training for the teachers from primary
school and preschool fi nalized with an exam and a
certifi cate recognised by the Ministry of Education
and Research. The theoretical courses of the faculty
are completed by many practical didactical stages
in schools and kindergartners, in special education
institutions, in foster homes, asylums, prisons etc.

Olympic dimensions for handball, basketball,

2008 at the „Aurel Vlaicu” University.
The curriculum is structured on a three-year
programme.
The bachelor programme is based on individual

Department for the Teaching Staff Training
function within the „Aurel Vlaicu” Univers on the
ground of the Education and Research Ministry Order
no. 5188/3 Dec. 2001.
In the same time DTST facilitates, which are
already employed as teaching staff from secondary
schools to achieve the teaching degree (defi nitive,
second and fi rst degree) after a session of exams.
All the graduates of these courses get a „Certifi cate”
issued by the Ministry of Education and Research.
It offers courses in psycho-pedagogy fi eld for
the students from pedagogical specialization and for
those, from other specialization, who wants to teach in
secondary school system.
DTST provide modules for teachers, principals and
school inspectors from secondary school by continuous
training courses.

The Central University Library
The Central University Library offers to the students of the University over 100,000 volumes of
scientifi c literature for all the specializations existing in the University. An important part of the scientifi c
documentation has been donated by some industrial enterprises from Arad, by the library of the West
University of Timisoara and the Central University Library of Cluj-Napoca and by private persons from
Arad.
The „Cornelia Bodea” Central University Library has over 200,000 volumes of scientifi c and
humanistic literature for all the domains, over 100,000 scientifi c revues and magazines and over 10,000

The Publishing House of the University was set up in 1995 and ensures the publishing of scientifi c

Leisure possibilities
Arad is a town, which is both ancient and modern, having individuality and a charm al its own
due its specifi c architecture and the unique symbiosis between the town and the Mureş River. The
happy combination of town and natural environment boasts important landmarks like the Fortress, the
Embankment and the new strand on the river and the latest addition of a nature reserve „The lower Mureş
meadow” extending down river till Hungarian border.
At last but not least Arad may be the starting point for trips all around the region, rich in medieval
fortress and castles, monasteries, various historical sites, churches, museums on the Mureş and on the
White Cris Valleys, trips to the famous vineyards of the region and the resorts of Moneasa and Lipova.

Cultural life
For the students studying at „Aurel Vlaicu” University, the city of Arad offers a large variety of
entertainment facilities, that makes of Arad an important academic centre. A true exhibition of Renaissance
architecture, Arad has been known for over a century as „Small Vienna”. The State Theatre offers plays from
the Romanian and universal literature. The Hirschl House, the Old Theatre, has a rich history and a promising
future.

„Old Theatre” hosts many modern national and international performances. In May it organizes the
Underground Festival, famous for its nonconformist and postmodern performances. Next to the theatre one
can have a drink at Joy`s (Literary Cafeteria) and socialize with other teenagers, actors, directors.

One of the most famous ethnography areas is local „Zarandului Land”, which preserves pieces
of great value and originality. Some important localities in this respect are: Bîrsa (folk costume
and pottery), Bârzava (potterz centre), Burchiş + Căpâlnaş (red pottery and folk sleeveless
jackets, Buteni (folk costume, dominant red and black costumes, for coats, sheepskin coats).
Also, at 100 km to Arad, in Moneasa around June it is The Fair of the Popular Handcrafts and

Aurel Vlaicu University owns a modern and fully equipped sport arena. The students of Sport and
Physical Education as well as students from other faculties within the university have practical courses
here.
Among the main activities carried on here we mention:
football; handball, volleyball, fi eld tennis, table tennis, lap tennis, fi tness-bodybuilding,
aerobics, gymnastics, dance, chess, etc.
The sport arena organizes several regional, national and international competitions (we mention the
fi nal of university national championship of male-basketball, U 17 judo national championship fi nal,
fi eld tennis-juniors national championship fi nal, games in female basketball 1st league).
Within the sport area there is a modern equipped gym proper both for muscle development and for
cardio training. The Aurel Vlaicu University Club with its rugby section (that plays in the 1st league)
carries on its activity in Sânnicolau Mic neighbourhood.
The teaching staff of the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education can guide those who are interested
in practicing different types of sport to several locations in the city (dance, martial arts, tourism,
parachuting, kayak, skiing, etc).

Life expenses
For foreign students a room in Student’s Residence charged at 50 Euro. No other supplementary fees
are demanded for registration. Cost for 10 lunches in the student’s canteen is 50 EUR.
Public phones function with magnet cards. You can get them from stores, the post offi ces or from the
slot machines (8 RON - 2.2 Euro, 13 RON - 9 Euro and by 20 RON - 5.5 Euro) in the center of town.
Arad has an extended transport network. The tram and bus lines are in operation from 5 a.m. to 12
a.m. Tickets must be bought in advanced from stop kiosks. A ticket cost is 1,5 RON (0,35 Euro), doesn’t
matter the distance. A month card costs 58 RON (around 15 Euro) for all lines.
The taxi prices vary widely. Make sure that the taximeter is on, or negotiate your price before starting
your trip. Price range from 1,6 RON/km (0,38 Euro/ Km) to 2,5 RON/km (0,7 Euro/km).
