Following an introduction by
Councillor George Littler, the Chairman
of Ollerton with Marthall Parish Council,
Alan Street, welcomed Sir Bobby and
Lady Charlton, and Councillor Roger
Buckley, Chairman of Little Warford
Parish Council. “ It is a pleasure
and privilege to invite Sir Bobby to
commission the new Hall at Marthall
fl ag pole to commemorate our Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee “ but before he did so
he wished to thank the group from every
branch of our parish life who have, under
the chairmanship of George Littler,
organised - in coordination with Lynette
Sweet - the programme of celebratory
events this weekend. Today has been one
of serious contemplation and dedication;
tomorrow will, as Her Majesty asked, be
one of family fun and good fellowship.
To applause, thanks were extended
to Lynette for the fi tting content of
the service, and of course to the familiar
group of volunteers “who have once
again fed and watered us this morning.”
The fl ag pole is presented to the
community by the Ollerton with Marthall
Parish Council ( which means as the
Chairman pointed out “you have
treated yourselves to it”.) but also with
generous help from Kevin Warburton
and associates from Oakwood Nurseries.
“Thank you, Kevin”. The fl ags, one the
Union fl ag which will be hoisted in a
moment: the second an armorial of the
Hall at Marthall, displayed at the side of
the room; have been presented by Little
Warford Parish Council, so “thank your
residents for that, Roger”,
“Sir Bobby, will you please do us the
honour of raising the fl ag of the Union as
a declaration of thanks and respect from
the villages of Ollerton, Marthall, and
Little Warford for 60 years of dedicated
service by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
the Second”. And “thank you very much
for making time to do so, especially as we
saw on the box you were still at Wembley
at about 10pm last night,”
After thanking us for giving him the
opportunity to do so, and emphasising the
on-going pleasure of living in the parish,
Sir Bobby duly braved the rain to hoist the
fl ag to the relayed sound of the National
Anthem.
