<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> <strong>School</strong>:<br />
<strong>Lighting</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Way</strong> <strong>as</strong> <strong>Peace</strong> <strong>Builders</strong>
The <strong>the</strong>me for <strong>the</strong> 2010-2011 school year w<strong>as</strong> “Let your light shine.” As you will see in this Newsletter, our<br />
student, staff and parent <strong>Peace</strong><strong>Builders</strong> do, indeed, allow <strong>the</strong>ir light to shine for one ano<strong>the</strong>r, for our community and for<br />
<strong>the</strong> world. I am very proud of all of <strong>the</strong>se “<strong>Peace</strong>Builder” leaders! Thank you to all who share your support with our<br />
school community. You light <strong>the</strong> way <strong>as</strong> <strong>Peace</strong><strong>Builders</strong> for Catholic education. Thank you for sharing your time, talent<br />
and tre<strong>as</strong>ure with us!<br />
For <strong>the</strong> 2011-2012 school year, our <strong>the</strong>me is “Make Me an Instrument of Your <strong>Peace</strong>.” As <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> <strong>Peace</strong><strong>Builders</strong>,<br />
we want, like Jesus, to reach out and touch <strong>the</strong> lives of o<strong>the</strong>rs with <strong>the</strong> gift of PEACE. The <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> <strong>Peace</strong><strong>Builders</strong>’<br />
Program is three years old. The goals of this program include: creating a healthy and safe environment conducive to<br />
learning, developing positive relationships, and teaching nonviolent attitudes, values and beliefs. Are not <strong>the</strong>se <strong>the</strong><br />
Gospel values that our Catholic schools teach? Is this not what we pray when we sing: “Make me a channel of Your<br />
peace; where <strong>the</strong>re is hatred, let me bring Your love;<br />
where <strong>the</strong>re is injury Your pardon, Lord.”<br />
You are invited to join our <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong><br />
students, staff and parents <strong>as</strong> we daily pledge to be<br />

“<strong>Peace</strong> be with you…”<br />

Dear Friends of <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> <strong>School</strong>,<br />
<strong>Peace</strong> is a perv<strong>as</strong>ive <strong>the</strong>me woven throughout<br />
<strong>the</strong> Gospels. In Luke’s telling of <strong>the</strong> birth of Jesus,<br />
a multitude of <strong>the</strong> heavenly host proclaim to <strong>the</strong><br />
shepherds near Bethlehem, “Glory to God in high<br />
heaven and peace on earth to those on whom his favor<br />
rests.” After <strong>the</strong> Resurrection, Jesus appeared to <strong>the</strong><br />
frightened apostles in <strong>the</strong> Upper Room and bestowed<br />
<strong>the</strong> gift of peace. <strong>Peace</strong> is God’s gift to us. <strong>Peace</strong><br />
in <strong>the</strong> scriptures is more than calm and <strong>the</strong> absence<br />
of violence and confusion. <strong>Peace</strong> is God’s vision in<br />
everything that a person needs to be fully human. To<br />
wish God’s peace for ano<strong>the</strong>r means a willingness to<br />
do what I can to bring that about, in o<strong>the</strong>r words, to<br />
be “peace builders.”<br />
In this issue of Spirit we wish to acknowledge and thank so many persons who have contributed to <strong>the</strong> 2010-2011<br />
Annual <strong>School</strong> Fund. Your contributions enabled our school to install new playground equipment in <strong>the</strong> first ph<strong>as</strong>e of<br />
creating “<strong>Peace</strong>Builder’s Place”, a tribute to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Peace</strong>Builder’s Program that is part of our <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> <strong>School</strong> atmosphere.<br />
Thank you so very, very much! And may <strong>the</strong> peace of <strong>the</strong> Lord be with you always!<br />

Oklahoma where <strong>the</strong> wind comes<br />
sweepin’ down <strong>the</strong> plain...<br />
Second Grade First Eucharist<br />
After many months of preparation and study, <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> Second Grade and PSR <strong>St</strong>udents participated in receiving <strong>the</strong>ir First<br />
Eucharist on April 3 rd . Personal banners representing what <strong>the</strong> sacrament meant to each student graced <strong>the</strong> Ga<strong>the</strong>ring Space. The<br />
new communicants led <strong>the</strong>ir families, relatives and friends beautifully, in prayer, <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>y all ga<strong>the</strong>red to celebrate this sacrament.<br />
The Jr. High performance of Oklahoma enjoyed<br />
four showings, with one of those being a sold<br />
out dinner <strong>the</strong>ater catered by Tex<strong>as</strong> RoadHouse.<br />
The proceeds from <strong>the</strong> dinner <strong>the</strong>ater went to two<br />
different missions: Global Brigade in Hondur<strong>as</strong><br />
which is a medical mission that <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> alumnus,<br />
Jessica Taylor is involved with and <strong>the</strong> Holy<br />
Childhood Association. Mrs. Cour and <strong>the</strong> students<br />
worked very hard crafting <strong>the</strong>ir performance and it<br />
w<strong>as</strong> evident in every show. They took one of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
performances on <strong>the</strong> road down <strong>the</strong> street to <strong>the</strong><br />
Sacred Heart Convent Mo<strong>the</strong>rhouse where <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
talents really shined due to limited props and no<br />
stage. Hats off to a fine performance by <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>.<br />
<strong>Agnes</strong> sixth, seventh and eighth graders.<br />
May Crowning Hanging with Sr. Joan<br />
The eighth grade and first grade students led <strong>the</strong><br />
May Crowning for <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> student body and<br />
faculty. At <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> May Crowning ceremony,<br />
<strong>the</strong> eighth graders received <strong>the</strong>ir cl<strong>as</strong>s ribbons<br />
which were pinned into place on <strong>the</strong>ir sleeves by<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir teachers, Ms. Harris and Ms. Rang. The<br />
ribbon symbolizes <strong>the</strong>ir many achievements and<br />
approaching graduation.<br />
“Principal for <strong>the</strong> day” and<br />
“Lunch with <strong>the</strong> Principal”<br />
again made for some lively<br />
bidding at <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong><br />
Auction. There were two<br />
winners of “Principal for <strong>the</strong><br />
day”, John Schmidt and Nicole<br />
Swehla. Each experienced a day<br />
<strong>as</strong> principal visiting cl<strong>as</strong>srooms<br />
and “working” alongside Sr.<br />
Joan during a “typical” school<br />
day. Mat<strong>the</strong>w, Tucker and Beth<br />
Von Behren were delighted to<br />
have “Lunch with <strong>the</strong> Principal”.<br />
They were able to leave <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>.<br />
<strong>Agnes</strong> campus with Sr. Joan for<br />
lunch at a destination of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
choice-McDonalds!

The 2010-2011 goal for <strong>the</strong> Annual Fund w<strong>as</strong> $77,000. Thanks to your generous support, we met<br />

Saying “Goodbye” to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> <strong>Peace</strong><strong>Builders</strong><br />
Mrs. Lyn Drainer’s name is synonymous with commitment, not only to her 3 rd grade cl<strong>as</strong>ses<br />
that she h<strong>as</strong> taught over 24 years but to <strong>the</strong> whole school. Mrs. Drainer h<strong>as</strong> been a regular at<br />
many school activities throughout <strong>the</strong> years. She h<strong>as</strong> been <strong>the</strong> faculty liaison with Parents’<br />
Club and a member of <strong>the</strong> MAGIC Match committee. Mrs. Drainer’s love for reading is a<br />
trait that she h<strong>as</strong> p<strong>as</strong>sed on to many of her students throughout her years at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong>. She<br />
also h<strong>as</strong> been an integral part of <strong>the</strong> “Read-In” that is enjoyed by students third through eighth<br />
grade during Catholic <strong>School</strong>s Week. When <strong>the</strong> Shurley English program w<strong>as</strong> introduced<br />
at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong>, Mrs. Drainer rose to <strong>the</strong> occ<strong>as</strong>ion. Her enthusi<strong>as</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> program w<strong>as</strong> an<br />
inspiration to <strong>the</strong> rest of <strong>the</strong> faculty. Mrs. Drainer’s talent for bringing out <strong>the</strong> best in her<br />
students is a blessing that we will all miss. Mrs. Drainer received <strong>the</strong> “Crystal Apple” award<br />
from Horace Mann in honor of her years of teaching.<br />
Mrs. Jackie Hartman knew that she wanted to be a first grade teacher since <strong>the</strong> time she<br />
finished second grade. Mrs. Hartman w<strong>as</strong> very committed to her first grade students. During<br />
her 24 years, she always made it a point to reach out and call every student’s parents during<br />
<strong>the</strong> first two months of school. She w<strong>as</strong> an active member of <strong>the</strong> M.A.G.I.C. Match committee<br />
and served <strong>as</strong> a part of <strong>the</strong> Late Day Administration staff. Mrs. Hartman plans to enjoy more<br />
time with her husband and visiting her sons. She will also be cheering her favorite team <strong>the</strong><br />
“Fighting Illini” to victory. Mrs. Hartman kept her faith growing by being a part of <strong>the</strong> faculty<br />
“Why Catholic” group. She shared her faith with her “little ones” through her love of Bible<br />
stories. Mrs. Hartman w<strong>as</strong> awarded <strong>the</strong> “Crystal Apple” from Horace Mann for all her work<br />
in <strong>the</strong> cl<strong>as</strong>sroom.<br />
Mrs. Johanna Grandchamp came to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> a little over four years ago. She w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> 7th<br />
grade Homeroom teacher, <strong>the</strong> 7 th and 8 th grade Math teacher and 7 th grade Religion teacher.<br />
During her years here at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong>, Mrs. Grandchamp w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> coordinator of Math Counts<br />
and during <strong>the</strong> l<strong>as</strong>t two years also served <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> faculty coordinator of Schol<strong>as</strong>tic Bowl. Mrs.<br />
Grandchamp w<strong>as</strong> also involved in <strong>the</strong> faculty and staff “Why Catholic” group. She w<strong>as</strong> an avid<br />
sports fan and w<strong>as</strong> in attendance at many Jr. High games with her family. When <strong>as</strong>ked about<br />
<strong>the</strong> students at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong>, Mrs. Grandchamp commented that she always enjoyed seeing <strong>the</strong><br />
difference in <strong>the</strong> students’ behavior from inside to outside of <strong>the</strong> cl<strong>as</strong>sroom. Mrs. Grandchamp<br />
said she would miss <strong>the</strong> camaraderie of <strong>the</strong> faculty but she looks forward to being able to<br />
spend more time with her family.<br />
Ms. Ashley Levan, joined <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> staff this time l<strong>as</strong>t fall and students welcomed her to<br />
our school community and now we are saying “Goodbye”. In just one year, Ms. Levan w<strong>as</strong><br />
a very strong presence at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> <strong>as</strong> she gave guidance to individual students and cl<strong>as</strong>ses.<br />
She showed a deep understanding for students but also challenged <strong>the</strong>m <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>y grew. Her<br />
guidance will be missed. We wish her continued success <strong>as</strong> she embarks on her educational<br />
journey for a PhD at Brigham Young University.
Eighth Grade<br />
The 2010-2011 school year w<strong>as</strong> a busy one for<br />
all of <strong>the</strong> eighth grade students at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong>.<br />
There were many hours of studying, tests and<br />
paper writing, service hours fulfilled and extracurricular<br />
activities.<br />
Confirmation w<strong>as</strong> celebrated on April 1, with<br />
Bishop Thom<strong>as</strong> John Paprocki conferring this<br />
Sacrament. After receiving <strong>the</strong>ir ribbons during<br />
<strong>the</strong> May Crowning, <strong>the</strong> eighth graders returned<br />
to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> school that night for <strong>the</strong> fourth<br />
annual lock-in. The evening’s events allowed<br />
<strong>the</strong> students to share memories, reflect on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
time at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong>, and look ahead to high school.<br />
Energy w<strong>as</strong> plentiful throughout <strong>the</strong> night and<br />
into <strong>the</strong> next morning. No Sleep!<br />
The eighth grade joined toge<strong>the</strong>r to dedicate<br />
a bookc<strong>as</strong>e for <strong>the</strong>ir fellow cl<strong>as</strong>smate Evan<br />
Hoffman. Jeff and Myra Hoffman also joined<br />
in <strong>the</strong> dedication and donated several books<br />
from Evan’s own personal library. The bookc<strong>as</strong>e<br />
and reading nook are now part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong><br />
Library for all students to enjoy.<br />
Graduation activities included an eighth grade<br />
dance on May 13 th , planned by <strong>the</strong> Room Parents.<br />
Sr. Joan joined <strong>the</strong> future graduates in a well<br />
deserved Pepsi Pause with <strong>the</strong> Principal. This<br />
“Pepsi Pause” is a time for Sr. Joan to talk with<br />
and listen to <strong>the</strong> eighth grade about issues that<br />
are important to <strong>the</strong>m and provides an avenue<br />
for <strong>the</strong>m to relay <strong>the</strong>ir thoughts and feelings on<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir experience and suggest improvements at<br />
<strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong>.<br />
The eighth grade breakf<strong>as</strong>t on May 17 th<br />
welcomed <strong>the</strong> 2011 cl<strong>as</strong>s into <strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong><br />
Alumni community. An awards ceremony on<br />
May 18 th awarded <strong>the</strong> students for all of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
hard work and dedication to <strong>the</strong>ir studies and<br />
extra-curricular activities. A Graduation M<strong>as</strong>s<br />
w<strong>as</strong> celebrated in <strong>the</strong> evening with Fr. Bob<br />
followed by <strong>the</strong> presentation of diplom<strong>as</strong>. The<br />
newly graduated students returned to <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> next day to board a bus to take <strong>the</strong>m on<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir much anticipated cl<strong>as</strong>s trip to <strong>St</strong>. Louis. <strong>St</strong>.<br />
<strong>Agnes</strong> wishes all <strong>the</strong> new alumni blessings on<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir future journeys.<br />
evanwalk<br />
On Sunday, May 1, over 500 people ga<strong>the</strong>red at Lincoln Park in<br />
Springfield for evanwalk, to remember and celebrate Evan Hoffman<br />
on his 14 th birthday. Evan would have been an 8 th grader at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong> l<strong>as</strong>t year, but p<strong>as</strong>sed away after a 2-year battle with cancer<br />
in June 2010.<br />
Many <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> students, faculty and parish families were among<br />
those ga<strong>the</strong>red for <strong>the</strong> walk, picnic and balloon rele<strong>as</strong>e. Fr. Bob<br />
provided a special blessing, and Sr. Joan did <strong>the</strong> honors of picking <strong>the</strong><br />
winning 50/50 raffle ticket. The event raised more than$17,000 for<br />
<strong>the</strong> Evan Hoffman Children’s Fund at <strong>St</strong>. John’s Children’s Hospital.
MAGIC Match and Leadership Donors Appreciation Dinner<br />
Parish Picnic- “Party with <strong>the</strong> Pope”<br />
Why wait to celebrate…that w<strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong> thinking<br />
for this year’s <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> Parish picnic. Many<br />
parishioners and school families enjoyed <strong>the</strong><br />
picnic. The highlight w<strong>as</strong> honoring Mr. Pope<br />
for all he h<strong>as</strong> done over <strong>the</strong> years. Les Pope<br />
w<strong>as</strong> not retiring but <strong>the</strong> Parish wanted to<br />
recognize him for all his years of service to<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> Parish and school community.<br />
Mr. Pope started working for <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong><br />
in 1989. He h<strong>as</strong> tirelessly, and faithfully,<br />
maintained <strong>the</strong> church, rectory and school<br />
buildings. He also h<strong>as</strong> taken care of <strong>the</strong><br />
grounds, mowing in <strong>the</strong> hot, hot summers<br />
and plowing in <strong>the</strong> frigid winters. Thank you<br />
for all you do for us here at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong>, Mr.<br />
Pope! We are blessed!<br />
It's been an active year for <strong>the</strong> “Young at Heart” group at <strong>St</strong>.<br />
<strong>Agnes</strong>. Since September of 2010, <strong>the</strong>y have enjoyed four potlucks,<br />
four Grapevine Socials, held a Games Day, a Health Fair and a<br />
Blood Drive. YAH also took two trips, one in December to Our<br />
Lady of <strong>the</strong> Snows in Belleville to see <strong>the</strong> Christm<strong>as</strong> lights. A<br />
second trip w<strong>as</strong> in April to <strong>the</strong> Conklin Barn II Dinner Theater to<br />
enjoy a prime rib buffet dinner prior to a hilarious comedy “Run for<br />
Your Wife”. A full bus of 56 people made <strong>the</strong> trip. Everyone in <strong>the</strong><br />
group w<strong>as</strong> “Young at Heart” ranging in age from mid forties to late<br />
eighties. The trip w<strong>as</strong> successful in bringing a divergent group of<br />
parishioners toge<strong>the</strong>r for a fun event. Additionally, YAH members<br />
went to <strong>the</strong> Muni <strong>as</strong> a group to see Guys and Dolls in July. Many<br />
more activities are planned for this coming year.<br />

Young at Heart (YAH)
“Moving On!”<br />
May 20 th w<strong>as</strong> a big day in <strong>the</strong> lives of some<br />
“little people” here at <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />
This day marked <strong>the</strong> end of preschool and<br />
<strong>the</strong> beginning of new experiences for many.<br />
Parents, grandparents and special people filled<br />
<strong>the</strong> seats of <strong>the</strong> gym to watch <strong>the</strong> preschoolers<br />
perform many of <strong>the</strong> things <strong>the</strong>y had learned<br />
throughout <strong>the</strong> school year. The program w<strong>as</strong><br />
accented with <strong>the</strong> “Days of <strong>the</strong> Week” song, a<br />
song about Noah’s Ark and <strong>the</strong> <strong>Peace</strong>Builder’s<br />
Pledge. The pledge is said by <strong>the</strong> whole<br />
student body toge<strong>the</strong>r every school day during<br />
Morning Prayer. The program w<strong>as</strong> completed<br />
with Sr. Joan giving <strong>the</strong> preschool students<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir “Moving On” certificates.<br />

Oh, <strong>the</strong> Places You Will Go!<br />
The <strong>the</strong>me of this year’s Learning Fair w<strong>as</strong><br />
Reading. A stage presentation of “The<br />
Bookworm” w<strong>as</strong> presented by <strong>the</strong> third<br />
graders and <strong>the</strong>ir teachers. The students<br />
and <strong>the</strong>ir families were invited to tour <strong>the</strong><br />
school to partake in <strong>the</strong> many cl<strong>as</strong>sroom<br />
activities. A special thank you to <strong>the</strong><br />
Reading Committee, whose initiation of <strong>the</strong><br />
“Family Projects” enlivened <strong>the</strong> halls with<br />
posters, t-shirts and dioram<strong>as</strong> depicting a<br />
favorite family book.<br />
Elegant Event<br />
The <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Agnes</strong> Kindergarten cl<strong>as</strong>ses came<br />
dressed in <strong>the</strong>ir finest and used <strong>the</strong>ir best<br />
manners for <strong>the</strong> fourth Annual Elegant Event.<br />
Young gentlemen escorted young ladies to have<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir pictures taken and <strong>the</strong>n returned to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
respective cl<strong>as</strong>srooms for an elegant sit-down<br />
lunch complete with dessert followed by dancing<br />
a waltz. The children practiced <strong>the</strong>ir manners<br />
and money counting skills <strong>as</strong> <strong>the</strong>y ordered <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
dining fare from parent waiters and waitresses.<br />
The students discovered that it can be fun to get<br />
dressed up and use <strong>the</strong>ir manners.
