How We Were Freed: From Indentured<br />
Servants to Slavery<br />
We all know <strong>the</strong> Civil War emancipated approximately<br />
four million slaves, but prior to <strong>the</strong> Civil War, <strong>the</strong>re were freecoloreds,<br />
ex-slaves, and former indentured servants who secured<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir own freedom. This workshop outlines various ways slaves<br />
and indentured servants were able to gain and maintain <strong>the</strong>ir freedom<br />
pre-Civil War. Various reproductions of actual documents<br />
will be shared.<br />

Jesse and Frank James: The Outlaw Years<br />
In <strong>the</strong> aftermath of <strong>the</strong> American Civil War, a number of<br />
former guerrilla fighters found new occupations as outlaws and<br />
robbers. Two of <strong>the</strong>se men were <strong>the</strong> famous Jesse James and his<br />
bro<strong>the</strong>r, Frank. A historical interpreter from <strong>the</strong> James Farm, will<br />
be here to continue <strong>the</strong>ir story. This program will focus on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
days as outlaws, and is a must for history buffs.<br />

Mourning <strong>the</strong> death of a loved one was a large and drawn out<br />
practice in <strong>the</strong> 1800’s. Join us to witness a full mourning outfit<br />
and learn more about this often unknown American custom.<br />

Meet at <strong>the</strong> J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain for a brief lecture<br />
by Professor Miriani on <strong>the</strong> origin and history of <strong>the</strong> Plaza. You<br />
will receive a map containing an outline of <strong>the</strong> tour. We will walk<br />
for about 70 minutes to illustrate <strong>the</strong> principles applied by J. C.<br />
Nichols and his son, Miller Nichols. There has never been a commercial<br />

called Lake Maurer. Join us as we look at <strong>the</strong> history of this fascinating<br />
place. You will get a chance to share many photos of this<br />
early amusement park that, for many of us, was part of our lives.<br />

as a woman who was forced out of her home and <strong>the</strong>n walked to<br />
Texas from Jackson County, Missouri! O<strong>the</strong>r selected women’s<br />
stories will be shared through a PowerPoint presentation, music,<br />
and historic replicas.<br />
