WINTER 2013
PASSPORT 1

M A DELEINE A LBR IGHT’S V ISIT TO THE BOW ER S
The Bowers Museum is extremely
grateful for the opportunity to host
“Read My Pins: The Madeleine Albright
Collection” through January 13, 2013.
The Bowers Board of Governors
and Staff were humbled by Secretary
Albright’s efforts to make the most
of the opening festivities by attending
multiple events and signing hundreds
of catalogues.
On Thursday, October 18, we had
a successful press preview where
Madeleine toured the media through
the exhibition with coverage by NBC,
PBS, Phoenix TV and other regional
publications. A special fundraising
dinner took place at a private home
in Laguna Beach raising more than
$60,000 to support the educational
programs of “Read My Pins.” A special
thanks to Bowers Board Member
Lynda Thomas who hosted this
fabulous dinner at her beautiful home.
Then on Friday morning, Secretary
Albright conversed with more than
250 local World History, Government
and Political Science high school
students who were hand-selected for
this special opportunity. Afterwards,
our Members were invited to partake
in a conversation between Madeleine
Albright and Bowers President Peter
Keller in the Kershaw Auditorium
on Friday afternoon followed by a
personal book-signing.
We topped off Secretary Albright’s
visit with a VIP Reception and private
conversation for nearly 300 sponsors,
government officials and Bowers
Fellows in the John M. Lee Court
on Friday evening with a live musical
performance by the Thelonious Monk
Institute of Jazz.
ON THE COVER
NEW EXHIBITION
LUCY’S LEGACY: The Hidden
Treasure of Ethiopia
EXHIBITION OPENS FEBRUARY 9, 2013
Ethiopia is the cradle of mankind, the
birthplace of coffee, the purported resting
place of the Ark of the Covenant—and
home to Lucy, the 3.2 million year old
hominid that has become the world’s
most famous fossil. With 40 percent of
her skeleton intact, Lucy remains the
oldest and most complete adult human
ancestor fully retrieved from African soil.
This exhibition is an opportunity for
people to better understand current
scientific theory of human evolution, and
to see for themselves how the discovery
of Lucy continues to profoundly influence
our understanding of human origins—
even 30 years after her discovery. After
being exhibited at the Bowers Museum,
this incredibly rare and fragile hominid
fossil will return to Ethiopia.
“Lucy’s Legacy: The Hidden Treasure of Ethiopia”
is an International Exhibition organized by the
Houston Museum of Natural Science in collaboration
with The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the
Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the
Ethiopian Exhibition Coordinating Committee.
National Tour underwritten by The Lester & Sue
Smith Foundation and Ethiopian Airlines. Funding at
the Bowers Museum is provided by the Margaret A.
Cargill Foundation.
Over the past couple of decades, the Bowers Museum has established
a reputation as a mid-sized Museum that thinks big. We’ve created
partnerships with some of the world’s greatest museums and have organized
many international exhibitions that have gone on to travel nationally and
even internationally to museums that are much larger than the Bowers.
None of this would be possible, however, without the ongoing strong support
of Individuals, Corporations, and Foundations, as well as the incredible
partnership that we have with the City of Santa Ana.
In order to assure the sustainability of the high quality programs that
the Museum has established over the years, the Board of Governors
has recently launched a program called the Kennedy Legacy Circle of the
Bowers Museum. If you haven’t heard about this yet, you will hear a great
deal in the coming months, and we hope you will listen closely.
The Kennedy Legacy Circle has been named in honor of our former
Chairman and staunch supporter, Donald P. Kennedy. When Don
retired from the Board, after spearheading the new 30,000 square-foot
wing which is also named “The Donald and Dorothy Kennedy Wing”,
Don established a $2 million endowment specifically to assure quality
programming in his new wing. Don knew that the only way to assure
the Museum’s future was through a legacy gift. Since then, several more
individuals have come forward with commitments to fund the future of
the Bowers Museum.
In the coming months, you will see a lot more information on the Kennedy
Legacy Circle and what it means to the Museum as well as the benefits for
you, the donor. There are so many ways to give that are easy and that
can actually save you money or provide more income during retirement.
The Bowers has recently offered a series of planned giving sessions led
by our consultant Sue Nunn, whose work is underwritten by the James
Irvine Foundation and the Orange County Community Foundation. These
beneficial seminars will continue in the spring and I encourage you to
learn more at bowers.org/legacy. Finally I am pleased with the exhibitions
and programs we continue to bring to Southern California and look
forward to another rewarding year.
