Within the last years, Hager & Werken has remained true to themselves despite of continuous
changes. On the one hand, we remained what we have been from the very beginning:
“the specialist for specialties” offering an interesting variety of consumables and small
devices for dentists and dental technicians. We are an owner-operated family business in
the fourth generation selling our products into 70 countries worldwide through the trade.
Our catalog, coming in a rejuvenated design, is THE reference book for dental specialties, not
only for our domestic market Germany.
On the other side, we keep advancing like practically no other dental company. Some products
have become classics within the last decades, such as the Miraject needles, OCCLU-
Spray, SPANDEX and other brands. But what makes our catalog and a visit to the Hager &
Werken booth especially interesting, are our novelties. “What’s new?” is a question, which
we hear more often than other dental companies and which signalizes: We are famous for
innovative products. We hope to satisfy your wishes and needs with each of these novelties.
Change means constancy for us.
This new catalog is our best argument for this statement: Featuring GAPSEAL (p. 53) for a
decisive minimization of failures in implantology as well as PERFECT SPLINT C (p. 46/47) the
most simple and quick form of splinting or the numerous new miradent products. This wide
range gives the dental practice a chance to distinguish in the eyes of the patients, with
approved and innovative products.

Inject with “Safety”
Receiving the invoice of the German workers’ compensation board last week, I was startled
and asked myself “What is the equivalent for our good money?” Well, a rather real, important
equivalent is taking-over the follow-up costs for possible infections of our staff. So it’s
not amazing that there are a lot of directives and guide lines. In a dental practice, infection
may arise out of many reasons. Practically always, the main reason is a poor hygiene or a
oder non-observance of basic infection prevention. Starring in this drama is the needle stick
injury.
The RKI galvanizes! – The new guide lines of the Robert Koch Institute anticipate every wish
of “hygiene-conscious” inspectors. There is nothing that isn’t stipulated to every nut, bolt
and screw. I miss one thing: The explicit consideration of the fact that recapping must never
be done with two hands. Regarding frequency, a needle stick injury is far from being a
bagatelle!
Recapping always with one hand only – We know from games of skill: a hoop or something
like that has to be beaded with one hand and a stick. That’s about the way the used
canula should be re-balanced into the protection cap after injection, what is anything but
easy. That is the reason why many assistants push the cap back onto the used needle in a
hurry. In modern language you call that “double-handed recapping” – much more than carelessness!
It happens in a second –a small prick followed by a big fear!
And if my patient doesn’t know that he is infected? Unfortunately, some patients aren’t
aware that they are carriers of dangerous infective germs. A hepatitis C or a HIV infection
have a long incubation time. Nowadays, as a “boss” you have to think: Exactly the patient
I’ve just anaesthetized could be infected. And exactly this injection canula might bear
pathogen germs. In case my assistant or I get an accidental prick from this needle, it’s not
that unlikely that we caught this infection. It’s that simple – and that dangerous!
Quick and safe: The tiny “click” – When using the Miramatic syringe, the canula is not
screwed on, but “clicked” on. This is simple, safe and needs little time! A pleasant side effect:
You know the problem – the canula has been screwed on, the way through the tissue has
been found, you placed optimally – no liquid flow! You repeat the whole procedure, the
carpule hasn’t been penetrated sufficiently. Reason? The canula hasn’t been completely
screwed onto the syringe thread. So you have no choice but to play it again (painful for the
patient). This cannot happen with the Miramatic “click”!
Something about the Miraject canulas – the “classics” of canulas. They were the first
disposable canulas in the dental practice 40 years ago! The sizes of 0.3 and 0.5 mm with
lengths of 21 to 35 mm cover all possible injection techniques for the dentist. Miraject has
remained “the” canula for me and many of my colleagues, and that for good reason!
Logistically good disposal system – Not only recapping is a cause of danger, but also the
disposal of the canula is a similar risk. Who knows the old methods to dispose of sharp, dangerous
waste: Emptied plastic containers were “concreted” with plaster after having been
filled with canulas, scalpel blades, etc. A dangerous anachronism! There’s another way - all
safe and simple. With the Miramatic-Box. It’s pretty colorful (in statutory safety colors),
practical and –above all – safe. Once closed, the lid cannot be removed. When filled, the
second, smaller lid shuts the disposal opening. Trying to re-open it, you’ll fail as the small
clip will tear off. Forever closed! And to have a safe location, you screw it to a table holder
(provided). However, the most important is the disposal opening of the box. The assistant
inserts the Miraject canula, a small turn and it falls into the box, untouched by a human
hand. Aside from this “twist and off” opening, there are clips to break off for other blood
and saliva contaminated waste.
During treatment: The Miramatic Holder – Hager & Werken completed its system with the
Miramatic Holder Plus, as recapping is only dangerous in case the canula has to be disposed
of. Let’s assume you wish to use the same syringe with another carpule for the same patient.
Do you leave it without any protection cap? Miramatic Holder Plus, the “stand for the injection
canula” with a fixing clamp solves this problem as well. The syringe remains in upright
position, within reach anytime, without any risk of injury.
My advice: Just ask for a demonstration of the Miramatic system and the RKI, your blood
pressure and panic assistants are topics of the past.

The Algiloid system consists of

• and a brand alginate as "heavy body“ material.

done, if required.
For approximal defects you should
work with copper foils. For these purposes,
the cut foil is clamped into the
approximal spaces in order to provide
for a separation. The use of a matrix
retainer is usually unnecessary.
CYANO VENEER: The approved Problem Solver
“A product still existing 5 years after its launch is worth while being dealt with in detail”. At
first, this famous sentence of Prof. Dr. Motsch seems anachronistic in the light of the abundance
of “new”, highly actual products, which are introduced with a great fuss and then disappear
clandestinely. Often the sight of “old” proven classics is lost by this – the sight of
materials like Cyano Veneer.
This material has been known on the dental market for 20 years. It is not a composite:
Primarily, it consists of an ethyl-cyano acrylate adhesive, hardened powders with color pigments
and a polymerization accelerator. The extremely tissue and pulp-friendly acrylate
adhesive is underlining, bonding agent and mixing liquid for the powder in one. Also polymerization
with a lamp is unnecessary. So Cyano Veneer adheres directly on etched enamel,
dentin, precious metal and acrylate as well as on underlinings with eugenol.
Cyano Veneer is no universal material – it is a problem solver. Due to its high adhesive strength
it is the ideal repair material, e. g. for facings. It is used for underlinings and fillings and
serves as post and bracket adhesive, as fissure sealing and as filling for deciduous teeth. It
has proven itself suitable for cavities of class I and V. It has been successfully applied even
for denture repair.
The abundance of possibilities is (nearly) unlimited. One advantage of the material is the
fact that the consistency is modifiable. It can be mixed in thin consistency to be used as
adhesive or for fissure sealing, in a viscous consistency it is applicable for extensive defects
or crown build-ups. More than ever, today’s focus is the quick processing and the favorable
material costs. This material is extremely inexpensive – with material costs of approx. 1 Euro
per application, even without extra payment!
We recommend the following indications:
• fillings of deciduous teeth
• fastening of brackets
• splinting of loose teeth
• renewal or repair of facings
• temporary repair of prosthetic work

PERFECT SPLINT C - an all-purpose splint system
The Perfect Splint C System with its pre-fabricated mesh arches and arch bands not only
supports the quick and uncomplicated fixation of maxillary and mandible front teeth into an
anatomic position, but also enables the fabrication of temporary adhesive bridges in the
front and anterior lateral area.
Fabrication of a temporary adhesive bridge
Due to a root fracture the root remains of tooth 11 but inadequate for pin placement (Fig. 1).
As the front tooth area offered sufficient space and the temporary pivot tooth was meant as
bridge link, the fabrication of a temporary adhesive bridge was indicated as immediate
treatment.
After removing the root remains of tooth 11 the radian vestibular was determined with the
aid of an arch template. Most interesting for that classification is that the radius of the
outer anterior arch, that is vestibular, correlates with the inner radius of the arch band and
that in turn with the palatinal, respectively lingual support area. In that case it turned out
that the Perfect Splint C arch in size C 4 was ideally adaptable (Figs. 2/3).
Following that procedure the designated abutment teeth 12 – 21 were isolated with rubber
dam. In order to prevent the later adhesion of attachment material and rubber dam it is recommended
to cover the rubber dam with a thin layer of Vaseline at the abutment teeth
area. Afterwards, the temporary pivot crown 11, which was altered into a bridge link, was
adhered to both neighbouring teeth (Fig. 4).
During this work step the bridge link should be properly positioned between the teeth, so
that the usually narrow space, which is available palatinal, suffices for the perforated arch
band. Once adapted to the palatinal surface of crowns 12 - 21 and an appropriate length
correction, the prepared arch was ready to serve as bridge framework. Following that, the
palatinal enamel of the pertaining crowns was conditioned by acid etching. In one go the
prepared arch band as bridge framework was then adhered to the palatinal crown surfaces
and the bridge interlink with Cyano Veneer. During this process it should be ensured that the
material seeps through the perforation of the arch band (Fig. 5).
If necessary, additional material may be applied to improve the adhesive bond. After
smoothing the surfaces the rubber dam was removed, and the following articulation and
occlusion control finalised the incorporation. The patient was very happy with this quickly
made, very comfortable and in addition fixed temporary treatment (Fig. 6).
Summary
The Perfect Splint C System is an all-purpose splint system in dental arch shape that allows
for an invisible lingual stabilisation of front teeth as well as the fabrication of temporary
adhesive bridges for immediate single tooth replacement.

Bacteria that penetrate into hollow spaces and gaps of implants are a main reason for periimplantitis.
There is an easy solution to this serious problem – GapSeal. This gel is applied
when screwing-in the implant and it seals the implant bacteria-proof. More than 10 years of
clinical experience of the Heinrich-Heine-University of Düsseldorf, Germany prove that
GapSeal reduces the failures in implantology significantly.
Periimplantitis is one of the main reasons for failures in implantology. This inflammation,
which develops around implants, may lead to bone loss and loosening of the implant – and
even cause a loss of the implant. Consequence is an extensive and expensive treatment,
inter alia including a removal of the inflammable tissue followed by a corresponding buildup
treatment, which may also destroy the patient’s confidence and contentment regarding
the efficiency of his dental practice. Periimplant diseases origin often from the gaps, that are
inevitable between implants and the mostly screwed build-ups. These gaps can be minimized
depending on the precision of the manufacture, however they are never bacteria-proof. And
above all, they have an open connection to the oral cavity with its bacteria settlements.
In case of a periimplantitis, the spectrum of germs consists of a high amount of gram-negative,
anaerobic bacteria. These humid gaps and hollow spaces offer an ideal milieu for these
bacteria - as well as for fungi. Already one decade ago, the Heinrich-Heine-University of
Düsseldorf, Germany started to search for a solution to this problem under the direction of
Prof. Dr. Dr. Fritzemeier. Based on the fact that e. g. the gap between abutment and implant
averages at “only” 85 µm, whereas the decisive bacteria only measure between 4 µm and
0.012 µm, a gel was developed that seals the capillary gaps and interiors of all compound
implants. It is already applied with screwing in of the locking screw, so protecting against
inflammations by bacteria, viruses and fungi from the very beginning and durably. Ever
since, GapSeal has been a standard insertion for a variety of implant systems for 10 years.
The number of failures has decreased significantly. Now, GapSeal is available for all implantologists:
It can be purchased in small, sterile portion carpules, which are inserted into a
special applicator – it is just that easy. GapSeal seals the gaps and hollow spaces of implants
fast and inexpensively, avoids a penetration of bacteria, so making a decisive contribution
against periimplantitis and eliminating a main reason for implant losses – within seconds,
easily and inexpensively.
After removing the closure cap GapSeal is directly applied by simply turning the transport wheel.

The application of fluoride treatment by dental professionals
and its effectiveness is clinically proven based on scientific
research. Additionally, sodium fluoride has been
established as an effective anti-caries agent due to the
following three facts:
• Enhancing of re-mineralization and reduction of
de-mineralization of dental hard tissue
• Increases the restistance of enamel against acid attacks
• Reduction of the ability of the plaque micro organisms to
metabolize sugar
Furthermore, it is proven that fluorides are most effective
when they are topically applied to the teeth. Fluoride gels

HF surgery – for surgeons only?
Many dentists associate the term "high frequency surgery" (in short HF) with complicated
surgical techniques. It indicates a technique that strictly addresses dentists having a surgical
focus. Is Hf surgery something for specialists? Or does it offer advantages for a "normal"
dental practice as well? Are the Americans right, when they speak of "tissue management"
in that context? Or is that purely a marketing argument? "High frequency units are an indispensable
part of the modern dental practice", says Dr. Sebastion Michaelis of the Heinrich
Heine University in Düsseldorf/Germany, who concentrated on high frequency surgery in the
dental practice. "Used correctly, it offers an easy and safe treatment method for many fields
of application." In reality, the cutting electrodes enable to carry out the most intricate work
in even the narrowest cutting areas. Compared to a scalpel, it enables the dentist to work
controlled and completely free of pressure, and that in turn grants an easy and relaxed
treatment for dentist and patient.
Also advantageous is the coagulation mode, at which the high frequency wave evaporates
the cell and evokes the rapid precipitation of protein. This provides a clear operating field
and causes immediate sterilization due to the high heat.
In the Megahertz range the high frequency waves run through the electrode in 1.2 million
wave cycles per second and cluster at the tip. The electrode itself remains cold.
The hf units offer three currents:
Cutting current / non-modulated
wave
While cutting, the current concentrated at tip of the electrode
heats up the tissue so rapidly that the vapour pressure,
which develops within the cell, virtually ruptures the walls
of the cell and thus separates the tissue.
During the coagulation process the tissue is heated up slow
enough to coagulate the cytoplasm, which causes the tissue
to shrink and thereby stanches the flow of blood.
The range of application in the field of dentistry includes e. g. the removal of tissue for histological
examinations (including tumor resections), sulcus widening and gingivectomy.
A distinction is drawn between three operating modes: The non-modulated HF current for
cutting alternatively to the scalpel, the slightly modulated current for cutting with simultaneous
coagulation, and the higher modulated current for coagulation. The universal hf1
SURG unit offers an interval mode in addition to the last-mentioned mode. This unit demonstrates
a particular advance of this technique, which is known since the sixties: Two entirely
separate handpieces for cutting and coagulation enable to work without the bothersome
change of handpiece. The infinite variable intensity regulation warrants an optimal cutting
performance at all times.
A comprehension of the theoretical and practical fundamentals of the HF technique are considered
essential for the successful work. "Once you are acquainted with the basic principles,
working with the HF units is a piece of cake", says Michaelis.
And Dr. Hans H. Sellmann from Marl/Germany endorses: "In my opinion, every dental practice
should be equipped with an hf1-SURG unit. I use it in our dental group practice since

of the dentin thickness over the pulp.
Within 12 years of research, Prof. Gente from the University of Marburg, Germany has
developed a method focussing on a practical, simple measurement with a clear statement:
Depending on the diameter of the dentin tubuli, a minimum dentin layer of 0.7 – 1.4 mm
should remain as “barrier”. The electrolytic characteristics of the dentin liquor allow a determination
of the layer thickness by measuring the resistance.
Use
Measurement can be done after calibration with an additional trigatron electrode.
Interesting is that no static evaluation at one point has to be done, but that a “scanning” of
the tooth with continuous measurements is possible. In doing so, green illuminating diodes
stand for ample space and the last orange illuminating diode marks a remaining layer thickness
of 0.7 – 1.4 mm. The obtained absolute value is irrelevant, as the potential damage of
the pulp is dependent on the dentin tubuli diameter when exceeding this limit as is the
measurement itself. “Orange” means that the minimum layer thickness has been achieved,
“red” shows that the protective layer over the pulp horns is already too thin. In case the
device is not correctly calibrated for the tooth to test, it indicates this by flashing diodes.
Additionally, there is the following innovation for preparation: Especially critical dentin
areas can be marked with a pencil to be left out when preparation is proceeding.
