kriti MEANINGFUL MUSINGS FROM SUCCESSFUL AGEING TO GEROTRANSCENDENCE: PRESENT GAPS & FUTURE POTENTIAL Successful ageing till date has been a predominant area of research in the field of ageing and much work has been done to develop this concept which on the face of it is a positive term. Havighurst (1961), who labeled successful agers as those persons who lived longer with respect to number of years or absolute longevity and could find satisfaction in later life. Successful ageing as a concept has undergone several shifts and shades. Earlier successful ageing meant avoiding bad outcome and preserving health and vitality now the notion is slowly getting replaced by the second version of revealing the psychological compensating mechanism enhancing and contributing to every possible experience of positive ageing and ageing successfully. The growth of positive psychology has provided a flexible and interpretive paradigm for the growth of new theories like Gerotranscendence (Tornstam, 1989).The virtue of transcendence, as proposed by Seligman and Peterson 2004, is linked to the growth of the gerotranscendence movement. Lars Tornstam proposed his theory on the basis of qualitative interviews with Swedish population. According to him gerotranscendence is a characteristic typically displayed in old age. A move towards gerotranscendence is marked with increasing feeling of a cosmic communion with the spirit of the universe, a redefinition of the perception of time, space, objects, life and death, a decrease in interest in superfluous social interaction, self- centeredness and material things, and more time spent in meditation. The theory can have vast implications in the field of gerontology. Gerotranscendence provides a framework through which elders can be supported to actively engage, disengage or re-engage into socially expected roles, relationships and norms as dictated by events that occur during the life course. Despite the limitations of this theory like its abstractness and lack of empirical objectivity, the present paper highly emphasizes this concept as it is expected that movement towards this theory would break the shackles of the research confined to successful aging. The concept of gerotranscendence can be explored to a greater extent and a possibility of reaching beyond the present reality of life and the merger of the Atman with the Bhrama can be looked at which would culminate into cosmic harmony with the larger universe and would provide meaning to one’s existence. FLASHBACK CELEBRATING OUR PAST: ACHIEVING OUR DREAMS – 2011 GLOBAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE JUNE 29 TH – JULY 2 ND , 2011 National Career Development Association, USA organized “2011 Global Career Development Conference” at San Antonio, Texas, USA from June 30 to July 2, 2011. The main theme of the conference was to discuss the issues, developments and practices and problems facing the profession of Career Development the world over. Its focus was on “Celebrating Past: Achieving our Dreams” The conference was inaugurated by Senator Ms. Leticia Van de Putte, senator from Texas on June 30, 2011. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Mark Guterman, President, C & G Associates and one of the Principals at MeaningfulCareers.com. The conference was attended by delegates from 18 countries including India. Professor N.K. Chadha, President and Dr. P.K. Khurana, Vice President of India Career Development Association (ICDA) represented India at the Conference. Professor Chadha carried the National Flag of India during the Ball Room ceremony at the Conference. Professor Chadha also presented a memento to Ms. Charlie Butler, the President of NCDA during a presentation of ICDA before the NCDA Board. Both Professor Chadha and Dr. Khurana extended an invitation to the members of the Board to visit India for the 2013 ICDA global conference „Colours of Career Development‟ The conference was divided into Round Table sessions and Concurrent Sessions for the Presentation of the papers on June 30, July1-2, 2011 Professor Chadha chaired the round table session on Career Development Initiatives in India. This generated lot of interest among the participants who were very keen to know about this profession and how it is shaping up in India. The Round Table session was followed by a Presentation on “Career Development Initiatives in India” by Professor Chadha and Dr. Khurana on July 1, 2011 at one of the concurrent sessions. The presentation was very well received by the delegates at the session. Professor Judith Hoppin, Oakland University, Dr. David M. Reile and Dr. Barbara of the Career Development Leadership Alliance, Maryland, Professor Ana C. Berrios Allison, The Ohio State University, USA, Professor Rich Feller, Colorado State University, USA, Dr. Dawn C.
