3. EXPERIMENTAL WORK � 3.1. Preparation <strong>of</strong> composite � By hand laying technique � Resin=60% <strong>of</strong> fabric weight � Hardener=2.6% <strong>of</strong> resin weight � Accelerator=2% <strong>of</strong> resin weight � The mixture <strong>of</strong> polyester resin with the given weight % <strong>of</strong> hardener and accelerator was applied in between as received jute fabric pieces to get alternate layers <strong>of</strong> resin matrix and jute fabric reinforcement. � A hot–plate setup was constructed and the laminates were hot pressed at three different temperatures 60, 80 and 100 0 C under 2 ton load for 8 minutes with the help <strong>of</strong> a hydraulic press to enhance the rate <strong>of</strong> curing and bring out uniform distribution <strong>of</strong> resin mix. � The green composite is then left out to atmosphere for 48 h under a load <strong>of</strong> 8kg for avoiding relaxation. � The specimens were then cut from the laminate for tensile test with the help <strong>of</strong> hacksaw according to the specific standard. � 3.2. Hygrothermal Treatment The specimens were <strong>hygrothermal</strong>ly conditioned in a humidity cabinet where the conditions were maintained at a temperature <strong>of</strong> 60 0 C and 95% relative humidity (RH). The humidity cabinet had an inbuilt thermometer for temperature and hygrometer for relative humidity measurements. The temperature variation was maintained between 0-0.5 0 C whereas the RH variation was allowed in the 0-1% range. The composite laminates were placed on perforated trays. The <strong>hygrothermal</strong> conditioning was carried out for different lengths <strong>of</strong> time ranging from four to sixty- four hours. � 3.3. Tensile Testing Tensile studies were carries out to determine the as tensile yield strength, tensile strength at break (ultimate tensile strength), tensile modulus (Young's modulus), elongation at yield and break and energy to yield and break point. Tensile tests were performed in an Instron 1195 machine in accordance with a specific standard. 21
