HIBS Newsletter
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As we approach the end of another busy term, I
reflect on two issues; social networking and
ERO.
SOCIAL NETWORKING
Social Networking online is a part of most of
our teenagers daily lives and presents issues for
Schools and parents. Young people have
become high users of modern technology.
Students are sharing photos, music videos and
sometimes all sorts of intimate information with
friends and possibly strangers.
Like any other aspects of the internet, social
networking sites suffer from the pervasiveness
of misuse. Many invitations from friends to sign
up are disguised to deceive. Credit card
fraudsters and sexual predators prey on the
young and innocent. Even if users are not
looking for these sites the sites often find them.
Policing these sites is difficult and social
networking is here to stay. Talking to people,
getting together in person and visiting people
seems more and more to be less meaningful.
I urge you to talk with your sons/daughters
about the possible dangers with online social
networking.
ERO
Recently ERO visited HIBS for two weeks to
look at how well your sons are being educated.
While ERO reported back verbally each day to
me and other senior managers, as well as the
BOT at the conclusion of the visit, the formal
report will not be available for at least four
weeks. I still would like to share with you some
findings they have reported.
ERO observed 22 teaching lessons at HIBS,
reporting that teachers are well prepared, have
good paced lessons, good use of ICT and the
students are focused and confident. Very
evident is the trust and respect for students and
teachers within the classroom.
June 2012
Students are questioning well and are well
directed by the teachers. There is high
expectations, purposeful engagement and
individual needs are being met.
The ERO team also observed that clear values
are evident at HIBS and the context of the
HIBS environment is excellent. Pastoral care
through the House system is excellent and fully
supported the special character of HIBS.
A good junior curriculum programme is in
place and good guidelines in the Senior
programme. The special character is reflected
in the school curriculum and is tied well to the
New Zealand curriculum. There is a strong
balance between students academic and
pastoral needs.
One statement I was pleased to hear was:
“HIBS is a place where a boy can be himself”.
More comments were - a strong partnership
exists between students and staff. Staff subject
knowledge is strong. Staff respond to the needs
of students and this creates a highly engaged
learning environment.
Comment was also made on the year 10
development programme and its success in
preparing our year 10 students for the future.
In the administration of the school they have
commented on the good leadership by the
SMT, the clear governance and management
between the Boards and the Principal and the
great involvement of parents in the community
of HIBS.
Overall the verbal feedback has been extremely
positive and we look forward to the written
documentation.
I extend my thanks to all of the community for
the preparation and portraying of HIBS as a
great and vibrant educational institution. We
can all be proud of this school.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL
STAFF
We farewell Sandi Millar, our Gateway Co-ordinator, who
has only been with us a short time but has looked after our
Gateway students well.
We welcome Angela Shaw to HIBS as our new Gateway
Co-ordinator.
Currently Miss Sue Robertson, HOD Mathematics, has
returned to England to be with her mother who is seriously
ill. I thank those staff who are covering Sue’s classes .
Also our thoughts go out to Jackie Orr, Tim Ackroyd and
Sandra Banks, the President of the PSA, who have lost
family members recently.
PSA
We thank the PSA for their organisation of the year 7
mother and son breakfast and the year 10 father and son
breakfast held recently. This is a new initiative from the
PSA and was an outstanding success. Two HIBS old boys,
Alexander Sparrow and James Chin, were the speakers at
the breakfasts. They both spoke extremely well and were
very interesting to listen to.
VARIETY SHOW
What an event! Having to put on an extra show confirms
the demand for this high class quality event. Thanks to Paul
Cotton, Greg McMillan-Perry , Gino Moretto and Marie
Martin for their organisation . To all involved it was a great
event and thanks goes to the MacIntyre and Havler families
for their help with the SMT video. I have had many
comments, including some from ERO, about the high
quality of our performing arts.
INTERNATIONAL SERVICE
We wish our International Service team all the best as they
head to Vietnam to work for Blue Dragon. The boys have
worked hard for a long period of time and I’m sure it will be
a success. Thanks to Mr Johnson and Mr Stevenson for
their leadership of this tour.
1st XV RUGBY
After making Premier One again and winning two games
already, the 1st XV will leave these holidays to compete in
the Gold Coast rugby tournament. This will be the third
time we have participated in this event. I wish the tour
party and coaches every success.
FOUR STRATEGIES FOR STRESS RELIEF
(Extract from Principals’ Digests Volume 18 Number 8)
Page 2
1. AVOID. A lot of needless stress can simply be avoided.
Plan ahead and rearrange your environment. If traffic stresses
you, leave earlier for work and travel by a less popular route.
Avoid engaging with people who drive you crazy. Learn how to
say no and seek help if you feel over-loaded.
2. ALTER. Try thinking about alternatives to what is causing
you stress. If it is someone else’s behaviour , ask them to change.
And be prepared to do the same. Find ways to share your work.
Learn better time management skills and organise your day and
week.
3. ACCEPT. Not all stress can be avoided or altered and all
you can do is accept this is the way things are. Find ways to let
off steam. Talk to a friend. Take up running or swimming or
yoga or some other kind of exercise to work off some of the stress.
Treat yourself. If your feelings are building up, try to let them go
and accept there are things you can do nothing about so you
don’t have to beat yourself up.
4. ADAPT. Feeling you can’t cope is one of the biggest causes
of stress. Adapting by changing your standards or expectations
can help reduce the stress you are suffering. Redefine success and
perfection and go easy on yourself and others. Ask yourself how
much this really matters and what difference it will make next
week or next year. Find opportunities for laughter, even if you
have to force it as laughing fires up and then cools down your
stress response and helps you feel relaxed.
GOOD ADVICE:
“Remember to laugh every day and do something fun. Spend
time outdoors. Move every day and find an activity you love to
do. Discover new hobbies. Be mindful of the moment, focus on
your breath and take three deep breaths if you start to feel
anxious. Practise compassion for another person. Journal your
thoughts and feelings. Play. Make art. Unplug - turn off the
TV, computer and cellphone. Develop a healthy social life -
support systems are vital in handling stress”.
ENROLMENTS
We are currently working through the enrolments for year
7, 2013. We have more applications than positions
available and while it is exciting to hear the positive
comments about HIBS and meet wonderful parents and
future students, there is also the anxiety and

REPORTS
Reports for senior students have been posted and next
Friday the reports for junior students will be posted. The
holidays will be a good time to talk with your son about his
progress and discuss any issues, positive or negative, in the
development towards achieving better results.
SKI TRIP
Best wishes to those participating in the annual ski trip to
Wanaka. I need to clarify a few points regarding this trip.
Although it takes place in the holidays and some parents
accompany their sons, it is important to realise that the
students do represent HIBS. Behaviour and attitude will
Parliament and watched the KidzLit Quiz National
Finals 2012. The questions were a lot harder than the
regional heats! However, HIBS won two books in the
audience quiz and the team that beat us (by only 2)
ended up coming 4th. A fun afternoon and the two
year 7 students who were involved this year are eager
PSA NEWS
Page 7
The past month has been a very busy time for the PSA and has seen two new initiatives introduced. The first of these was the Mother
and Son breakfast for year 7s, which proved to be a great success for everyone attending. Mothers were able to meet others new to the
school and it was a time for the boys to get to know each other over croissants and pastries. Alex Sparrow was our guest Old Boy speaker
and provided a very entertaining and motivational speech to inspire the boys.
Our second breakfast was for fathers and sons in year 10, and this was also a resounding success. There was lots of chatter amongst
everyone, with new friendships and networks being formed. The bacon and egg english muffins, croissants and pastries disappeared in a
flash. James Chin was our guest Old Boy speaker, who is now a Money Trader with the BNZ. James gave everyone an insight into his
time at HIBS and the exciting career he now has and this definitely got the boys thinking, and some Fathers too!
The Variety Show was a spectacular event and is always something that everyone looks forward to. The PSA were involved in a different
way this time, not only selling refreshments before and during the show, but having a few of us brave our nerves and join the staff in the
Line Dancing Crew in Achy Breaky Heart.
We are now focusing on our major fundraising event for the year, which is on Saturday August 11 and would like you all to get behind it
and support your school. The theme for this event is ‘Diamonds on Ice’ and promises to be a night filled with good food, wine, dancing
and an exciting auction. We will also be having a special part of the evening in which everyone attending will have the chance to win a
stunning diamond.
To give you a feel for what this evening will be like, you will be welcomed on arrival with a glass of bubbly and canapés, which will be
followed by a sit-down main meal. Platters of petit fours will arrive to your table after the ‘diamond’ part of the evening. We have ‘The
Hipnotics’ performing live on stage to get you up and dancing, as well as an amazing line-up of auction items. This will be an evening not
to be missed so get a group of friends together, or just come along and join others to have fun and dance the night away. Tickets will be
on sale soon, so keep an eye out as they are limited to 300 and won’t last long.
