Bridg<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> Next Century<br />
<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> has been chang<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> world for 100 years! As we celebrate a century <strong>of</strong><br />
leadership, fun, and friendship, we’re sett<strong>in</strong>g out to ensure every girl has <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />
reach her fullest leadership potential. That’s where <strong>the</strong> next century <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> comes <strong>in</strong>.<br />
<strong>Girl</strong> Scout<strong>in</strong>g’s success speaks for itself. Two-thirds <strong>of</strong> our nation’s most accomplished<br />
women <strong>in</strong> public service, bus<strong>in</strong>ess, science, education, <strong>the</strong> arts, and community life were<br />
or still are <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>. On May 29, 2012, President Barack Obama awarded <strong>the</strong> Presidential<br />
Medal <strong>of</strong> Freedom posthumously to our founder, Juliette Gordon Low. It is our nation’s<br />
highest civilian honor, presented to <strong>in</strong>dividuals who have made especially meritorious<br />
contributions to <strong>the</strong> security or national <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States, to world peace, or to<br />
cultural or o<strong>the</strong>r significant public or private endeavors.<br />
“Juliette Gordon Low was a visionary, whose legacy lives on <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 59 million American<br />
women who have been part <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> Scout<strong>in</strong>g at some po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives,” said Anna Maria<br />
Chávez, CEO <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA. “She believed that all girls should be given <strong>the</strong><br />
opportunity to develop physically, mentally and spiritually, and <strong>in</strong> found<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
1912, she made an <strong>in</strong>delible and endur<strong>in</strong>g contribution to <strong>the</strong> lives <strong>of</strong> girls and to our nation.<br />
It is so fitt<strong>in</strong>g that on our 100th anniversary, she should be honored with <strong>the</strong> Presidential<br />
Medal <strong>of</strong> Freedom.”<br />
We’re proud <strong>of</strong> our century <strong>of</strong> trailblaz<strong>in</strong>g, but it’s time to do more. To take bold steps. To<br />
rally <strong>the</strong> nation around <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> girls’ leadership and bridge to <strong>the</strong> next century.<br />
<strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Heart</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pennsylvania</strong> is happy to <strong>in</strong>troduce this year’s Program Partners<br />
who are will<strong>in</strong>g to do that! Each is committed to <strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>g activities that support our mission:<br />
build<strong>in</strong>g girls <strong>of</strong> courage, confidence, and character, who make <strong>the</strong> world a better place.<br />
As we move <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> second century <strong>of</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> Scout<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> USA is unveil<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a new and excit<strong>in</strong>g cause to create gender-balanced leadership <strong>in</strong> all sectors <strong>in</strong> one<br />
generation. What an important role <strong>Girl</strong> Scout<strong>in</strong>g plays <strong>in</strong> meet<strong>in</strong>g that objective! The<br />
<strong>in</strong>itiative is called ToGetHerThere. We need to share, with everyone, <strong>the</strong> great leadership<br />
examples we see every day <strong>in</strong> <strong>Girl</strong> <strong>Scouts</strong>—from our littlest leaders, our <strong>Girl</strong> Scout Daisies,<br />
to our <strong>Girl</strong> Scout Gold Award recipients <strong>in</strong> high school.<br />
One hundred years ago, Juliette Gordon Low founded <strong>Girl</strong>s <strong>Scouts</strong> with a goal to enable girls<br />
to do th<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>the</strong>y had never done before. We carry on her legacy <strong>of</strong> leadership and ask you<br />
