Scope of Work for the Removal of Identified Designated Substances<br />

City of <strong>Niagara</strong> <strong>Falls</strong> – <strong>6121</strong> Lundy’s <strong>Lane</strong>, <strong>Niagara</strong> <strong>Falls</strong>, ON<br />

GENERAL MEASURES AND PROCEEDURES FOR PROJECT – ASBESTOS, MERCURY AND SILICA:<br />

Prior to abatement commencement, warning signs restricting access to the building must be posted in<br />

sufficient numbers in the work area(s) indicating the hazardous material of concern and personal<br />

protective equipment to be worn inside the work area(s).<br />

Doorways, windows, vents, floor drains and services holes in walls and grilles located within the work<br />

area(s) must be sealed with polyethylene sheeting sealed with tape as appropriate.<br />

Washing facilities for decontamination consisting of wash basin, water, soap and towels should be<br />

provided to workers for all phases of the project.<br />

Workers should not eat, drink, chew gum or smoke in the work area(s).<br />

Drop sheets should be used below the abatement activities in work area(s) where dust, chips or debris<br />

containing designated substances are produced or may be produced.<br />

Dust and waste should be cleaned up regularly and removed by vacuuming with a HEPA filter equipped<br />

vacuum.<br />

Compressed air or dry sweeping should not be used to clean up any dust or waste from the work area(s)<br />

or from clothing.<br />

Gross waste and debris is to be cleaned up at the end of each abatement shift for prevention and<br />

housekeeping measures.<br />

Inspection of the work area(s) is to be conducted daily to ensure the work area(s) are clean and controls<br />

for construction are maintained.<br />

Waste containers used to dispose of designated substances shall be dust tight, suitable for the type of<br />

waste, impervious to the waste intended for and clearly identified.<br />

Waste containers shall be cleaned with a damp cloth or HEPA vacuumed immediately before being<br />

removed from the work area(s) and removed from the work area(s) frequently and at regular intervals.<br />

SPECIFIC MEASURES AND PROCEEDURES FOR PROJECT - ASBESTOS ABATEMENT:<br />

Water with a wetting agent added shall be used to control the spread of dust and fibres during the<br />

removal of the asbestos-containing materials.<br />

Each side of each entrance or exit from the work area(s) must be fitted with curtains constructed of<br />

polyethylene sheeting.<br />

A decontamination facility, as described in O. Reg. 278/05 (as amended) shall be located as close as<br />

practicable to the work area(s). The facility should consist of three rooms arranged in sequence and<br />

constructed so as to prevent the spread of asbestos-containing dust. The rooms shall be separated with<br />

curtains of polyethylene sheeting fitted to each side of the entrance or exit to each room. Each worker<br />

shall enter the facility when leaving the work area(s) and decontaminate his or herself in the order as<br />

outline in O. Reg. 278/05 (as amended).
