SPORT ALLEY BOWLING 12 The Brave and the Bowled The Alley Bowling Section’s Monday Night League ended on June 6, a couple of weeks later than usual owing to the events of mid-March. Though the triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident were cause for sadness and concern at the time, it was not long before our bowlers were lifting each other’s spirits on the bowling lanes. Over the ten weeks of action in the spring season’s Monday Night League, many bowlers scored wonderful high games and high series, notably: Men High Game High Series (3 games) Phil Eymard 257 631 Nicholas Cooper 236 579 Takuma Nagasaki 234 Asao Tanaka 567 Women Chihiro Hall 233 555 Yuko Strzepek 219 568 Naoko Bracha 216 Miwako Fu 543 After thirty games in total, the winning team and top individual bowlers of the Monday Night League were: Team Winner: Nicholas Cooper, Mike Strzepek, Satish Tandon and Miwako Fu Runners Up: George Fu, Sonomi Tanaka, Takuma Nagasaki and Dave Waddington. The Alley Bowling Section held our annual Dinner Party and prize-giving ceremony on Saturday, June 18. Bowlers from all the three mixed leagues took part, although numbers were a little lower than hoped for owing to the timing and the departure of many families at the start of the school holidays. The party was nevertheless great fun, with participants enjoying the fine food (many thanks again to our chefs and to Masaki-san), party games, and wonderful music provided by fellow bowler Mike Strzepek. Trophies and prizes were awarded as follows: Player of the Year 2010 men: Phil Eymard Player of the Year 2010 women: Chihiro Hall 2011 Nations Cup winners: The P Team 2011 Nations Cup Runners-up: Universal Dragons 2011 Nations Cup 2 nd Runners-up: Hot Curry Most Improved Player, Men: Howard Ihu Most Improved Player, Women: Sachi Riley Come and Join Us! Summer Bowling League (five-week) starts on Saturday July 30, at 7:00 p.m. This is an individual league and, as with all our competitions, all levels are welcome. Please sign up on the sheet in the alley. The Fall Bowling Leagues will start on Monday, September 12. Again, all levels are welcome to join any of our four weekday competitions, which are as listed below. SPORT LAWN BOWLS News from the Green Despite the hot weather, this time of year on the green is enjoyable because the play is more casual in advance of the leagues and Club tournaments beginning. Returning players are getting back into form and reconnecting with friends they haven’t seen since the end of last season and there is always interest from the curious who have never played before as spectators while dining al fresco rink side or who since relocating to Japan think they may have some time to learn a new activity. Participants and supporters in the Kanto Men’s Pairs Qualification Tournament on July 3. Qualifying for the Final from the YC&AC were Vinod Kumar & Hans Pauli (front row, center), and Marcel & Zack Niederhauser (back row, wearing red and green). The first official event of the season, the Opening Day Tournament, was held on June 19. Fourteen players were randomly paired utilizing their handicaps to play for the Don Helm Trophy. The format for this year’s tournament was round robin with the overall winner being decided based on the number of wins, draws and losses they accumulated during the day. Congratulations to Junko Wilkinson and Yoko Lum, the winners after six matches and twenty-four ends played over 5 1/2 hours. Toshiharu Saito and Kazuko Yasuda were runners up. Note: In a pairs game one player is designated the lead and the other the skip. The lead player’s function is to draw close to the jack, to position some back woods in the event the jack is moved and the site of play relocated, and leave the lanes open for the skip. The skip is generally the most well rounded of the pair because he often has to thread his bowl through a crowd of bowls to win the end. On July 3 YC&AC hosted the Kanto Men’s Pairs Qualification Tournament. A total of six teams participated, two each from the YC&AC, Tokyo Lawn Bowls Club and Tokyo Lawn Bowling Club. We like to think our teams have an advantage on our natural turf green since the other clubs play on artificial turf, a faster surface, but because they are highly skilled players it doesn’t take long for them to adjust. Perhaps the most exciting game of the day was between the YC&AC B team of Marcel & Zack Niederhauser vs. the Tokyo Lawn Bowling A team of T. Matsubara & H. Sudo. At the end of the sixth end Marcel & Zack were down 4 points, at 0-4, with one end to go. In the seventh end Marcel & Zack scored four points to end the game in a draw. Turning this potential loss into a draw was key at the end of the day as Marcel & Zack finished the day second overall rather than third. This will be Zack’s last tournament at the YC&AC for a while as he graduated from YIS in June and will be attending the University of Tampa in Florida starting in the fall. We’re glad he and his father will have some good memories of this tournament and wish him well as he begins his studies in Sports Management. The YC&AC A team of Hans Pauli & Vinod Kumar were the 1 st place team in last year’s tournament and repeated their performance again this year. The 2 nd place team led by Marcel Niederhauser with a new partner due to Zack’s departure and the 3 rd place A team from Tokyo Lawn Bowling Club will advance to the Japan Bowls Men’s Pairs National Championship to be held in Hokkaido in September. Good luck to both YC&AC teams. Representing the Club on July 30 and 31 in Akashi at the Japan Bowls Triples National Championship will be the team of Toshiharu Saito, Shinya Fujiwara and Seishi Yoda. In the next issue of Connect we hope to have a good result to report. If you are at the Club early on Sunday mornings starting July 10 you will see our Sunday Morning League playing for the next 12 weeks. While it is too late to join the league as a regular, you can still sign up as a substitute. Prior experience is not required. This is a way to learn the game.
