HEALTH AND WELLNESS 20 Something to Ponder The world is full of myths, misconceptions, conflicting opinions and theories, some intentionally put out there to sell products, some simply misguided. This is especially the case in the field of health, nutrition and exercise. Turn on the TV, open a magazine, read a newspaper and we are submitted to an endless stream of content that often does little more than perpetuate conventional “wisdom.” Remember the old adage: if something is repeated often enough it becomes the accepted norm? We are also bombarded with information promoting the latest fad or groundbreaking research. You may care to ask yourself, who decides upon what content to include? Who sponsors the media source? Who funds the study? “One man’s food is another man’s poison.” Take the “diet industry” as a prime example. You may be interested to know there are currently almost 5,000 diet books in print. They can’t all be right. Are any of them? It is abundantly clear that when it comes to weight gain and obesity we aren’t doing too well despite this flood of information, not to mention the limitless supply of diet foods, pills, potions and powders on the market. And how about the fabled food pyramid? Does one size really fit all? The multitude of diet books all citing success stories suggests not. What works for one can have the opposite effect on another. “Oh, I know what I should eat, but…” Let me ask you, do you really know? Seems to me that when it comes to nutrition people are either confused or doggedly clinging to the popular mantra of the day. As you chill out over the summer, you may care to ponder some of the following and ask yourself the same question: What do you really know about nutrition? • The traditional cooking oil for Okinawans, the champions of longevity, is lard. (Yes, that is pork fat!) • Wheat, one of the least tolerated and most difficult foods to digest, contains opiate like chemicals that are highly addictive. Another donut with your coffee? • Cows are designed to eat grass and grass only, not soy, grains, concrete and other non-foods. We are what we eat, and so are cows. Is eating a sick animal really going to enhance your health? • Pasteurization is complete only when all of the enzymes contained in the milk are extinguished, thus rendering the food pretty much dead. Don’t we eat to promote life and vitality? YC&AC CONNECT August 2011 • Levels of certain nutrients can be hundreds of times higher in organic foods grown in truly healthy soils compared with conventionally grown produce. How much is your health worth? • Up until about 100 years ago, unfermented soy was considered an industrial product unfit for human consumption; the oil was used in the manufacture of paint and glue. Then the marketing men got busy and now we have this supposed ‘wonder’ food! Ever notice… The less fat we are consuming, the more obese we are becoming? As we eat less fat, cardiovascular disease continues to skyrocket? Ever see… A 2% cow? So why are we clamoring for 2% processed milk? An obese wild animal? Should you be eating it… If you can’t pronounce the ingredients on the label? If it wasn’t around a few thousand years ago? Maybe it’s time to start listening to your body, using some intuition and getting back to basics in determining the food choices that are actually right for you. Or, better still, if you are ready to make changes, how about taking advantage of some of the nutritional/lifestyle services on offer at the club: • Take a metabolic typing test to help determine those beneficial food choices and nutrient ratios, and receive a customized, ‘no dieting,’ diet plan. • Invest in cutting edge functional lab testing to take the guess work out of supplementation and gain an insight into digestive and hormonal health. • Learn how to reduce dietary stress factors and better understand which personal blocking factors may be holding you back. • Whether it’s baby steps or a complete overhaul, receive coaching and guidance throughout the process.
