Considering that around one tenth of the world’s population lives in the ASEAN nations alone, it is easy to imagine the important size of the market potential being served by this trade fair. For the last 15 years, we have looked after our customers in this part of the world from the NIEHOFF of Singapore (NoS) Representative Office, so of course we will be taking the opportunity to make new contacts at the trade far and deepen some of our existing ones. On stand F13 we will be demonstrating – representatively for the NPS* cable handling system, which was successful from day one and has since been continuously refined and improved – an SV400 NPS spooler and spools of different sizes, among them the smallest one type NPS400/100. This handy reusable spool has a winding width of 100 mm and is perfect for replacing the awkward cable rings often referred to as ”donuts“. On the other side there will also be an opportunity to learn more details about the items on display and meet Mr. Bengkok Kee, the new General Manager of NoS. The potential for the wire and cable industry in Southeast Asia is outlined in the report on the front page of this issue of NIEHOFF-News. Of course, we are thrilled about the trust placed by Zhenxiong in the production systems developed by NIEHOFF which will be used in key areas of this factory. As well as this, NIEHOFF technology is highly in demand in other parts of Asia as well, in particular in the Middle East. In the past, our head office was responsible for customers in this region. However, the on-going development and future prospects in the region prompted us to open the new representative office NIEHOFF of Middle East (NME) in Dubai. On page 6 we would like to present to you the new office and Michael Dalal, the General Manager of NME. Machinery and equipment which carries the NIEHOFF name must meet exacting standards. One aspect which is becoming increasingly more important relates to energy and how it is used. Not only is it important for machinery and plants to use no more energy than is absolutely necessary, but they should also offer help to ensure that all of the internal processes in a company can be designed more energy efficiently. On pages 4 and 5 you can read more on this subject and find out what else we are doing at NIEHOFF to adopt a more cost-effective energy strategy. KG, als Nachfolger von Dr. Horst Birkmann, dem langjährigen Vorstandsvorsitzenden und späteren Aufsichtsratsvorsitzenden der Maschinenfabrik WAFIOS AG, zum Präsidenten des Fachverbandes IWCEA* gewählt. Konrad Dengler aus der NIEHOFF- News-Redaktion unterhielt sich mit Heinz Rockenhäuser über diesen Verband. NIEHOFF-News: Herr Rockenhäuser, die IWCEA wurde 1988 als Dachorgani - sation der bedeutendsten Draht- und Kabel maschinenhersteller aus verschiedenen europäischen Ländern gegründet, um die Interessen von Ausstellern gegenüber Messeveranstaltern zu vertreten. Was hat sie erreicht? Heinz Rockenhäuser: Die IWCEA hat wesentlich dazu beigetragen, dass die von der Messe Düsseldorf ausgerichtete Draht- und Kabelfachmesse wire nicht nur eine internationale Spitzenveranstaltung wurde, sondern weltweit als „Leitmesse“ der Draht- und Kabelindustrie gilt. Alle führenden Unternehmen präsentieren dort alle zwei Jahre ihre Neuheiten. Die Kunden haben dort die beste Möglichkeit, Produkte, Kompetenz und Innova tionsfähigkeit verschiedenster Anbieter miteinander zu vergleichen. At the start of the year, Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF GmbH & Co. KG CEO Heinz Rockenhäuser was chosen to succeed Dr. Horst Birkmann, who for many years had been the CEO and subsequently the chairman of the supervisory board at machinery manufacturer WAFIOS AG, as the president of the IWCEA association. Konrad Dengler from the editorial team at NIEHOFF- News was talking to Heinz Rockenhäuser about this association and its role within the industry. NIEHOFF-News: Mr Rockenhäuser, the IWCEA was founded in 1988 as the umbrella organization for the key wire and cable manufacturers in a number of different European countries. Its stated aim was to represent the interests of exhibitors when dealing with organizers of trade exhibitions. What do you think it has achieved? Heinz Rockenhäuser: The IWCEA has played a significant role in ensuring that the wire cable and wire trade fair, which has now joined forces with the Düsseldorf trade exhibition, has not only evolved into a top international event, but that it is now also seen as the main global exhibition for the wire and cable industry. All of the leading companies present their new products there every two years. Customers have the ideal opportunity to compare the different suppliers in NIEHOFF-News: Wie wirkt sich die Globalisierung auf die IWCEA aus? Heinz Rockenhäuser: Der Verband unterstützt die Messe Düsseldorf dabei, auf den Wachstumsmärkten regionale Fachmessen zu organisieren, wie jetzt in Bangkok, die zügig an ein ähnlich hohes Qualitätsniveau wie die Leitmesse wire herangeführt werden sollen. NIEHOFF-News: Arbeitet die IWCEA mit anderen Organisationen zusammen? Heinz Rockenhäuser: Wir sind dazu generell offen, weil alle Ausstellerverbände das gleiche Ziel haben, nämlich gut organisierte Messen mit attraktiven Exponaten anzubieten. NIEHOFF-News: Gibt es zusätzliche und künftige Aufgaben für die IWCEA? Heinz Rockenhäuser: Nach jeder Messe analysieren wir deren Verlauf und diskutieren Optimierungsmöglichkeiten. Schon jetzt sind wir gespannt, wie sich die Großveranstaltung wire/Tube gemeinsam mit der METAV im kommenden Jahr auf den Messeerfolg auswirken wird. Außerdem verfolgen wir die Entwicklung aufstrebender Wachstumsmärkte, wie beispielsweise Indien und Brasilien. NIEHOFF-News: What effect does globalization have on IWCEA? Heinz Rockenhäuser: The association supports the Düsseldorf exhibition in its attempts to organize regional trade fairs in growth markets, such as the recent fair in Bangkok. The aim is to quickly bring this exhibition up to a similarly high standard as the main exhibition wire. NIEHOFF-News: Is IWCEA working with any other organizations? Heinz Rockenhäuser: We have nothing against the idea in principle, as all associations pursue the same objectives, namely to offer well organized fairs with attractive exhibits. NIEHOFF-News: Are there any additional tasks for the IWCEA in the future? Heinz Rockenhäuser: After every exhibition we analyse how it went and discuss ways for optimizing the next event. We are already looking forward to seeing what the combined effect of the big wire/Tube event and the METAV exhibition will be in terms of the success of next year’s show. Auf der Fachmesse wire Southeast Asia 2007, Stand F13, zeigt das Technologieunternehmen NIEHOFF einen Spuler Typ NPS SV400, der Teil des Niehoff-Paket-Systems (NPS) ist. Der Spuler Typ SV400 kann für alle NPS-Spulen der Typen 400/400 bis 400/100 benutzt werden, das heißt, für Spulen mit einem Flanschdurchmesser von 400 mm und einer Wickelbreite von 400, 250, 150 und 100 mm. Die Spule Typ NPS400/100 mit einer Wickelbreite von 100 mm ist besonders interessant, weil sie dem in Südostasien weit verbreiteten handlichen Gebindeformat der Kabelringe entspricht. Dieses kleine NPS-Gebinde, das die Anforderungen der japanischen Automobilindustrie erfüllt, kann jetzt direkt im Inline-Verfahren mit Extrusionsanlagen hergestellt werden. Mehrere asiatische Kabelhersteller haben bereits die unhandlichen Kabelringe („donuts“) durch Spulen Typ NPS400/100 ersetzt und erreichen dadurch wesentlich höhere Produktions leistungen. Das NPS wurde hauptsächlich für die Hoch - geschwindigkeitsproduktion von Automobil - leitungen und den Einsatz zerlegbarer Mehrwegspulen aus ABS-Kunststoff entwickelt. Die Spuler nutzen eine patentierte Verlegetechnik, um die Leitungen konisch auf die NPS-Spulen aufzuspulen. Die Spulen geben dem Gebinde einen sicheren, stabilen und schlingenfreien Halt, und zwar sowohl im gefüllten als auch im teilweise entleerten Zustand. NPS-Spulen bieten den Vorteil, dass sich die Leitungen fehlerfrei und mit höchsten Geschwindigkeiten überkopf abziehen lassen. Die Spulen können vollständig zerlegt werden und benötigen im Vergleich mit irgendeiner anderen Gebindeform weniger Transport - raum. In Europa hat das NPS fast vollständig alle anderen Gebindeformen, wie Pappfässer, Schachteln („boxes“) und Verpackungen, die entsorgt werden müssen, ersetzt. Südostasien und NIEHOFF Einer der wichtigsten Markträume für NIEHOFF ist Asien. Abgesehen von der VR China und Indien, erstreckt sich die Marktpräsenz vor allem auf die ASEAN-Staaten, wo fast ein Zehntel der Weltbevölkerung lebt, sowie Korea und Taiwan. Die Betreuung der dortigen Kunden erfolgt durch das NIEHOFF-Vertriebsbüro in Singapur, das NIEHOFF of Singapore (NoS) Representative Office. Zum Team des Büros gehören eine Sekretärin, Rosalind Choo, ein Service-Ingenieur mit Prozess- und Elektronikerfahrung, Leszek Szczepanowski, und zeitweise ein zweiter Mechaniker. Bengkok Kee (hinten / behind) At the wire Southeast Asia 2007 trade show, booth number F13, the technology company NIEHOFF will present the NPS SV400 type spooler, which is part of the Niehoff Package System (NPS). The SV400 type spooler can be used for all NPS spools from 400/400 to 400/100, i.e. spools with a flange diameter of 400 mm and a traverse width of 400, 250, 150 and 100 mm. The NPS400/100 spool with a traverse width of 100 mm is particularly interesting because its package corresponds to the in Southeast Asia widely used handy cable rings. The NPS was developed mainly for high-speed production of automotive wires and the application of collapsible multiway spools made of ABS plastic. The spoolers use a patented wire-laying technology to spool the wires conically onto the NPS spools, which offer a secure, stable and tanglefree package both when full or partially-empty. NPS spools offer highest pay-off speeds of the cable over top, can be fully dismantled and require less transport space compared with any other package. In Europe, the NPS has almost entirely replaced all alternatives such as cardboard barrels, boxes and disposable packaging. Southeast Asia and NIEHOFF One of the most important markets areas for NIEHOFF is Asia. Apart from PR China and India, the market presence extends in particular to the ASEAN nations, where approximately one-tenth of the world’s population lives, plus Korea and Taiwan. He worked for different companies and became a sales manager for products of leading European machinery manufacturers and sold machinery for various industry branches, finally the wire and cable industry. The activities included turnkey projects and the selling of different manufacturing plants. In all these years he travelled to many countries in Southeast Asia and Far East for business purposes and he gained a lot of sales experience. Beside his successful career as a sales agent, Bengkok Kee participated at post-graduate courses and acquired a ”Certificate in Industrial Management“ from the Singapore Polytechnic and the degree of a ”Master in Business Administration“ (MBA). From 1995 to 2002 Bengkok Kee Kok worked as Southeast Asia Regional Manager for a renowned wire and cable machinery builder. Then he joined NoS and settled in as the new general manager with full support of Alexander Matuschinski. The team at the Singapore sales office also comprises a secretary, Rosalind Choo, a service engineer with process and electronic competence, Leszek Szczepanowski, and if required, a second technician on a temporary basis. news 2/2007 3
