entwickelt. Umfangreiche Investitionsprojekte
benötigen direkt oder indirekt große Mengen an Drahtprodukten,
darunter Kabel unterschiedlichster Art.
Vielfältige Aktivitäten
Eines der Länder, in denen man den
Aufschwung hautnah erleben kann,
ist Vietnam, die am schnellsten wachsende
Wirtschaft in Südostasien. Fachleute
erwarten, dass das Brutto -
inlands produkt (BIP) in diesem Jahr
auf 7,9 % steigt. Im Fünfjahresplan
2006 – 2010 des Landes, das etwa 85
Millionen Einwohner hat, ist eine jährliche
Steigerung von mindestens 7,5
bis 8 % vorgesehen. Diese Entwicklung
wird durch zahlreiche Industrieparks
und Sonderwirtschaftszonen gefördert.
Die vietnamesische Draht- und
Kabel industrie verzeichnet seit dem
Jahr 2000 Wachstumsraten von 20 bis
30 %, wie die Fachzeitschrift „Wire
Journal International“ in ihrer Ausgabe
vom Dezember 2006 unter
Berufung auf das vietnamesische
„Ministry of Trade“ meldet.
Die dortige Kabelindus trie
umfasst mehr als 100 Unternehmen
unterschiedlicher Größe.
Ein anderes interessantes Beispiel
ist Thailand mit 65 Millionen
Einwohnern und einem
BIP-Wachstum von 4 %. Eine im
Zusammenhang mit der Fachmesse
wire Southeast Asia veröffentlichte
Pressemeldung
weist unter Bezug auf Thailands
„Board of Investment“ darauf
hin, dass ausländische und einheimische
Investitionen in den
ersten fünf Monaten des Jahres
2007 auf 5,6 Mrd. US$ geschätzt werden.
wire Southeast Asia
Vom 16. bis zum 18. Oktober findet in
Bangkok, Thailand, die Fachmesse
wire Southeast Asia 2007 statt. Das
große Interesse an dieser Messe ist unter
anderem daran zu erkennen, dass
die einst vorge sehene Ausstellungsfläche
um 25 % vergrößert werden
musste, um alle Interessenten zu
berücksichtigen. Rund 300 Aussteller
aus über 30 Ländern beteiligen sich.
Dr. Horst Birkmann, der frühere
langjährige Präsident des internationalen
Draht- und Kabelmaschinen -
ausstellerverbandes „International
Wire and Cable Exhibitors
Association“ IWCEA, fasste in einer
Pressemeldung des Veranstalters die
Bedeutung der fernöstlichen Märkte
wie folgt zusammen: „Südostasien ist
ein Markt, der erst noch aufkommt
und in seinem Wachstum von Asiens
dominierenden Supermächten Indien
und China angetrieben wird. Die Wirtschaft
der Länder Südostasiens ist frei
von Beschränkungen. ... So, wie es aussieht,
haben sowohl Thailand als auch
Vietnam ein gewaltiges Marktpotential
und werden zweifellos eine große
Auswirkung auf Südostasien haben.“
NIEHOFF in aller Welt
NIEHOFF all over the world
Südostasien und NIEHOFF
Die NIEHOFF-Gruppe kümmert sich
seit vielen Jahren mit Reprä sen -
tationsbüros in Schanghai und
Singapur um die Interessen ihrer Kunden
in China und Südostasien. Da deren
Produkte unter sehr unter schied -
lichen Klimabedingungen zu ver lässig
arbeiten müssen, sind die Anforderungen
an die Produktions systeme sehr
hoch. Die NIEHOFF-Gruppe wird daher
laufend mit Aufgaben kon frontiert,
die dazu beitragen, ihre technologische
Führung auf dem Gebiet des
Draht- und Kabelmaschinenbaus weiter
ausbauen zu können.
Many countries in Eastern and Southeastern Asia have
developed into important sales markets for wire and
cable machine manufacturers. Extensive investment
projects require directly or indirectly large quantities
of wire products, including a wide range of cables.
Wide-ranging activities
One of the countries in which this
boom can be experienced at first hand
is Vietnam, currently the fastest-growing
economy in Southeast Asia with 85
million inhabitants. Experts expect the
gross domestic product (GDP) to reach
7.9 % this year, and the country’s fiveyear
plan for 2006–2010 forecasts an
annual increase of 7.5 to 8 %.
This development is being fueled by
numerous industrial parks and special
economic areas. Quoting sources from
the Vietnamese Ministry of Trade, the
”Wire Journal International“ reported
in its December 2006 issue that the
Vietnamese wire and cable industry
has recorded growth rates of 20 to
30 % since 2000. The cable industry
there includes
more than
100 companies of varying sizes.
Thailand with its 65 million inhabitants
and a GDP growth of 4 % is another
interesting example. A press release
published in connection with the
wire Southeast Asia trade exhibition
quotes Thailand’s ”Board of Investment“
as saying that foreign and domestic
investments for the first five
months of 2007 are estimated at US$
5.6 billion. Among the foreign investors
there is the Zhenxiong Copper
Group Co., Ltd., China’s largest manu-
facturer of fine copper wire for conductors.
The company is in the process
of setting up a factory in Thailand
which is designed to deliver an annual
capacity of 20,000 tons (page 7).
The wire Southeast Asia
trade exhibition
The wire Southeast Asia 2007 trade exhibition
takes place from October 16 –
18 in Bangkok, Thailand. The response
in the industry to this trade exhibition
has been excellent, so much so that the
originally scheduled exhibition site
needed to be enlarged by 25 % in order
to provide enough space for all the
interested parties. Around 300 exhibitors
from more than 30 countries
are going to be taking part. Dr. Horst
Birkmann, formerly the president
of the International Wire
and Cable Exhibitors Association
IWCEA for many years,
summarized the significance
of the markets in the Far East
as follows in a press release on
behalf of the organizers:
”South East Asia is still an
emerging market and its
growth is fuelled by Asia’s incumbent
super powers of India
and China. The South East
Asian economies are free
from restrictions ... As it is,
both Thailand and Vietnam
have tremendous market potentials
and will no doubt
have great impact in South East
Asia.“
Southeast Asia and
NIEHOFF
The NIEHOFF Group looks after its customers
in China and in Southeast Asia
for many years from representative offices
in Shanghai and in Singapore.
Due to the fact that the products of
the local wire and cable manufacturers
in these countries are exposed to
very extreme climatic conditions and
have to exercise strong reliability the
demands on the cable production systems
are extremely high. As a result,
the NIEHOFF Group continuously faces
challenges which help to extend its
position as technological leader in the
field of wire and cable machine engineering.
demnächst findet in
Bangkok die Fachmesse
wire Southeast Asia
kennen.
Dear Friends of NIEHOFF,
The wire Southeast Asia trade exhibition, which has
been modeled on the key industry trade fair wire in
Düsseldorf, is due to take place soon in Bangkok.
Considering that around one tenth of the world’s
population lives in the ASEAN nations alone, it is
easy to imagine the important size of the market potential
being served by this trade fair. For the last 15
years, we have looked after our customers in this
part of the world from the NIEHOFF of Singapore
(NoS) Representative Office, so of course we will be
taking the opportunity to make new contacts at the
trade far and deepen some of our existing ones. On
stand F13 we will be demonstrating – representatively
for the NPS* cable handling system, which was
successful from day one and has since been continuously
refined and improved – an SV400 NPS spooler
and spools of different sizes, among them the smallest
one type NPS400/100. This handy reusable spool
has a winding width of 100 mm and is perfect for replacing
the awkward cable rings often referred to as
”donuts“. On the other side there will also be an
opportunity to learn more details about the items
on display and meet Mr. Bengkok Kee, the new
General Manager of NoS.
The potential for the wire and cable industry in
Southeast Asia is outlined in the report on the front
page of this issue of NIEHOFF-News. The company
portrait presented on page 7 in Chinese and English
shows just how rigorously companies in the Far East
approach the process of setting up and expanding
their production facilities. As just one example we
anderen Raum Asiens sehr gefragt,
nämlich in den Ländern des Nahen und
Mittleren Ostens.
Vertriebsbüro NIEHOFF of Middle East (NME) zu
Zhenxiong, who has become one of the
leading manufacturers on mainland China
in the space of only ten years and is now in
the process of building a brand new factory
in Thailand. Of course, we are thrilled about
the trust placed by Zhenxiong in the production
systems developed by NIEHOFF
which will be used in key areas of this factory.
As well as this, NIEHOFF technology is highly
in demand in other parts of Asia as well, in particular
in the Middle East. In the past, our head office was responsible
for customers in this region. However, the
on-going development and future prospects in the
region prompted us to open the new representative
office NIEHOFF of Middle East (NME) in Dubai. On
page 6 we would like to present to you the new office
and Michael Dalal, the General Manager of NME.
Machinery and equipment which carries the
NIEHOFF name must meet exacting standards. One
aspect which is becoming increasingly more important
relates to energy and how it is used. Not only is
it important for machinery and plants to use no
more energy than is absolutely necessary, but they
should also offer help to ensure that all of the internal
processes in a company can be designed more
energy efficiently. On pages 4 and 5 you can read
more on this subject and find out what else we are
doing at NIEHOFF to adopt a more cost-effective energy
Interview mit Heinz Rockenhäuser über die IWCEA
Anfang dieses Jahres wurde Heinz
Rockenhäuser, Geschäftsführer der
Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF GmbH &
Co. KG, als Nachfolger von Dr. Horst
Birkmann, dem langjährigen Vorstandsvorsitzenden
und späteren Aufsichtsratsvorsitzenden
der Maschinenfabrik
WAFIOS AG, zum Präsidenten
des Fachverbandes IWCEA* gewählt.
Konrad Dengler aus der NIEHOFF-
News-Redaktion unterhielt sich mit
Heinz Rockenhäuser über diesen Verband.
NIEHOFF-News: Herr Rockenhäuser, die
IWCEA wurde 1988 als Dachorgani -
sation der bedeutendsten Draht- und
Kabel maschinenhersteller aus verschiedenen
europäischen Ländern gegründet,
um die Interessen von Ausstellern
gegenüber Messeveranstaltern
zu vertreten. Was hat sie erreicht?
Heinz Rockenhäuser: Die IWCEA hat wesentlich
dazu beigetragen, dass die von
der Messe Düsseldorf ausgerichtete
Draht- und Kabelfachmesse wire nicht
nur eine internationale Spitzenveranstaltung
wurde, sondern weltweit als
„Leitmesse“ der Draht- und Kabelindustrie
gilt. Alle führenden Unternehmen
präsentieren dort alle zwei Jahre
ihre Neuheiten. Die Kunden haben
dort die beste Möglichkeit,
Produkte, Kompetenz
und Innova tionsfähigkeit
verschiedenster Anbieter
miteinander zu vergleichen.
At the start of the year, Maschinenfabrik
NIEHOFF GmbH & Co. KG CEO
Heinz Rockenhäuser was chosen to
succeed Dr. Horst Birkmann, who for
many years had been the CEO and subsequently
the chairman of the supervisory
board at machinery manufacturer
WAFIOS AG, as the president of the
IWCEA association. Konrad Dengler
from the editorial team at NIEHOFF-
News was talking to Heinz Rockenhäuser
about this association and its
role within the industry.
NIEHOFF-News: Mr Rockenhäuser,
the IWCEA was founded in 1988 as the
umbrella organization for the key
wire and cable manufacturers in a
number of different European countries.
Its stated aim was to represent
the interests of exhibitors when dealing
with organizers of trade exhibitions.
What do you think it has
achieved?
Heinz Rockenhäuser: The IWCEA has
played a significant role in ensuring
that the wire cable and wire trade fair,
which has now joined forces with the
Düsseldorf trade exhibition, has not
only evolved into a top international
event, but that it is now also seen as
the main global exhibition for the
wire and cable industry. All of the
leading companies present their new
products there every two years. Customers
have the ideal opportunity to
compare the different suppliers in
NIEHOFF-News: Wie wirkt sich die Globalisierung
auf die IWCEA aus?
Heinz Rockenhäuser: Der Verband unterstützt
die Messe Düsseldorf dabei,
auf den Wachstumsmärkten regionale
Fachmessen zu organisieren, wie jetzt
in Bangkok, die zügig an ein ähnlich
hohes Qualitätsniveau wie die Leitmesse
wire herangeführt werden sollen.
NIEHOFF-News: Arbeitet die IWCEA mit
anderen Organisationen zusammen?
Heinz Rockenhäuser: Wir sind dazu generell
offen, weil alle Ausstellerverbände
das gleiche Ziel haben, nämlich
gut organisierte Messen mit attraktiven
Exponaten anzubieten.
NIEHOFF-News: Gibt es zusätzliche und
künftige Aufgaben für die IWCEA?
Heinz Rockenhäuser: Nach jeder Messe
analysieren wir deren Verlauf und diskutieren
Optimierungsmöglichkeiten.
Schon jetzt sind wir gespannt, wie sich
die Großveranstaltung wire/Tube gemeinsam
mit der METAV im kommenden
Jahr auf den Messeerfolg auswirken
wird. Außerdem verfolgen wir die
Entwicklung aufstrebender Wachstumsmärkte,
wie beispielsweise Indien
und Brasilien.
NIEHOFF-News: Heinz Rockenhäuser,
wir wünschen Ihnen und der
IWCEA weiterhin eine gute
Hand und danken Ihnen für
dieses Gespräch.
* International Wire and Cable Exhibitors
Association
Well organized trade exhibitions
with attractive exhibits
An interview with Heinz Rockenhäuser about the role of the IWCEA
terms of their products, competence
and their ability to innovate.
NIEHOFF-News: What effect does
globalization have on IWCEA?
Heinz Rockenhäuser: The association
supports the Düsseldorf exhibition
in its attempts to organize regional
trade fairs in growth markets,
such as the recent fair in Bangkok. The
aim is to quickly bring this exhibition
up to a similarly high standard as the
main exhibition wire.
NIEHOFF-News: Is IWCEA working
with any other organizations?
Heinz Rockenhäuser: We have nothing
against the idea in principle, as all
associations pursue the same objectives,
namely to offer well organized
fairs with attractive exhibits.
NIEHOFF-News: Are there any additional
tasks for the IWCEA in the future?
Heinz Rockenhäuser: After every exhibition
we analyse how it went and
discuss ways for optimizing the next
event. We are already looking forward
to seeing what the combined effect of
the big wire/Tube event and the
METAV exhibition will be in terms of
the success of next year’s show. We are
also monitoring the development of
emerging growth markets like India
and Brazil.
NIEHOFF-News: Heinz Rockenhäuser,
we wish you and the IWCEA continued
success and thank you for your time.
Auf der Fachmesse wire Southeast Asia 2007,
Stand F13, zeigt das Technologieunternehmen
NIEHOFF einen Spuler Typ NPS SV400, der Teil des
Niehoff-Paket-Systems (NPS) ist. Der Spuler Typ
SV400 kann für alle NPS-Spulen der Typen
400/400 bis 400/100 benutzt werden, das heißt,
für Spulen mit einem Flanschdurchmesser von
400 mm und einer Wickelbreite von 400, 250, 150
und 100 mm. Die Spule Typ NPS400/100 mit einer
Wickelbreite von 100 mm ist besonders interessant,
weil sie dem in Südostasien weit verbreiteten
handlichen Gebindeformat der Kabelringe
entspricht. Dieses kleine NPS-Gebinde, das die
Anforderungen der japanischen Automobilindustrie
erfüllt, kann jetzt direkt im Inline-Verfahren
mit Extrusionsanlagen hergestellt werden. Mehrere
asiatische Kabelhersteller haben bereits die
unhandlichen Kabelringe („donuts“) durch Spulen
Typ NPS400/100 ersetzt und erreichen dadurch
wesentlich höhere Produktions leistungen.
Das NPS wurde hauptsächlich für die Hoch -
geschwindigkeitsproduktion von Automobil -
leitungen und den Einsatz zerlegbarer Mehrwegspulen
aus ABS-Kunststoff entwickelt. Die
Spuler nutzen eine patentierte Verlegetechnik,
um die Leitungen konisch auf die NPS-Spulen
aufzuspulen.
lassen. Die Spulen können vollständig zerlegt
werden und benötigen im Vergleich mit irgendeiner
anderen Gebindeform weniger Transport -
raum.
NIEHOFF of Singapore (NoS) Representative Office.
In jenen Jahren reiste Bengkok
Kee geschäftlich in viele Länder Süd ostasiens
Verkaufserfahrung. Parallel zu seiner
erfolgreichen Karriere als Verkaufsrepräsentant
absolvierte Bengkok Kee ein Aufbaustudium und
erwarb ein „Certificate in Industrial Management“
am Singapore Polytechnic und den akademischen
Grad „Master in Business Administration“
(MBA).
At the wire Southeast Asia 2007 trade
show, booth number F13, the technology
company NIEHOFF will present
the NPS SV400 type spooler,
which is part of the Niehoff Package
System (NPS). The SV400 type spooler
can be used for all NPS spools from
400/400 to 400/100, i.e. spools with a
flange diameter of 400 mm and a traverse
width of 400, 250, 150 and 100
mm. The NPS400/100 spool with a traverse
width of 100 mm is particularly interesting
because its package corresponds to the in Southeast
Asia widely used handy cable rings. This
small NPS package, which complies with the requirements
of the Japanese automotive industry,
can now be directly manufactured inline with extrusion
lines. Several cable manufacturers in Asia
have already replaced the hard-to-handle cable
rings (”donuts“) by NPS400/100 spools with the
result of drastically higher production output.
The NPS was developed mainly for high-speed
production of automotive wires and the application
of collapsible multiway spools made of ABS
plastic. The spoolers use a patented wire-laying
technology to spool the wires conically onto the
NPS spools, which offer a secure, stable and tanglefree
package both when full or partially-empty.
NPS spools offer highest pay-off speeds of the
cable over top, can be fully dismantled and require
less transport space compared with any
other package. In Europe, the NPS has almost entirely
replaced all alternatives such as cardboard
barrels, boxes and disposable packaging.
Southeast Asia and NIEHOFF
One of the most important markets areas for
NIEHOFF is Asia. Apart from PR China and India,
the market presence extends in particular to the
ASEAN nations, where approximately one-tenth
of the world’s population lives, plus Korea and
Taiwan. The NIEHOFF of Singapore (NoS) Representative
Office attends to the customers in this
region. These markets are not only commercially
important to NIEHOFF, but also from the technical
point of view very demanding: Due to the fact
that the products of the local wire and cable
manufacturers in these countries are exposed to
very extreme climatic conditions and have to exercise
strong reliability, the demands on the cable
Ziehmaschinen
Die elektronisch gesteuerten Walzdrahtzieh -
maschinen der Baureihe MSM sind mit wartungsfreien,
sehr fein regelbaren Drehstromantrieben
ausgestattet. Jede Ziehscheibe hat ihren eigenen
Antrieb, so dass sich die Umfangsgeschwindigkeit
der Ziehscheibe und die Durchlaufgeschwindigkeit
des Drahtes jeweils optimal aufeinander abstimmen
lassen. Nicht benötigte Ziehscheiben werden
automatisch abgeschaltet. Diese Walzdrahtzieh-
Power (kW)
consumption
NIEHOFF gebauten Doppelschlag-Verlitz maschinen
Transformatorprinzip arbeiten. Die Primärspule
besteht aus zahlreichen Windungen, durch deren
Innerbetrieblich Strom sparen
Druckluftversorgung
Zahlreiche Werkzeuge arbeiten mit Druckluft, die
in elektrisch betriebenen Kompressoren erzeugt
gestaffelt zugeschaltet. An Stellen
mit geringerem Lichtbedarf werden nur, wenn es
erforderlich ist, automatisch Lampen eingeschaltet.
In den Büros wurden dimmbare Raster -
spiegellampen installiert, die bei niedrigem Stromverbrauch
das Licht bedarfsgerecht lenken.
Energieeinsparungen ergeben sich auch, wenn
nicht genutzte Kleincomputer mit einem Schalter
vom Netz getrennt werden, anstatt im Stand-by-
Modus auf den nächsten Einsatz zu warten. Bei einer
Zahl von rund 300 PCs, die im NIEHOFF-Stammhaus
genutzt werden, summieren sich die Einsparungen
zu einem beträchtlichen Geld betrag.
Auch der Verbrauch an Wärmeenergie und damit
der Bedarf an Erdgas wurde verringert, beispielsweise
durch eine verbesserte Isolierung der
Gebäude und eine neue elektronische Regelung
und hydraulische Steuerung der Heizanlage.
Dadurch wurde auch der Ausstoß von klimaschädlichen
CO 2-Abgasen im Stammwerk um 250.000
kg/Jahr verringert, was umso bemerkenswerter ist,
A FRUGAL By adopting a more careful and more frugal approach to energy, companies can save significant amounts of money
and use it to strengthen their competitiveness. NIEHOFF specialists have long been working on ways to save energy –
through the careful design of machinery and plants as well as through the optimization of internal procedures.
APPROACH TO ENERGY
Drawing machines
The electronically controlled rod breakdown machines
of the MSM series are equipped with maintenance-free
three-phase AC drives, in order that
the circumferential speed
of the drawing capstan
and the drawing speed
of the wire can be perfectly
matched to each
other. Drawing
capstans which
are not needed
are auto-
RI-Glühe /
RI annealer
matically switched off. These rod breakdown machines
require 15 to 20 % less energy than conventional
gear driven rod breakdown machines. The
same drive concept transferred to NIEHOFF annealers
enables minimized slip operation and results
in highest surface quality of the finished wire.
Another example which demonstrates how engineering
have been able to minimize the energy
consumption of machine drive systems are the
double-twist bunching machines and the doubletwist
stranding machines. Unlike the two-bows
machines which once used to be common, these
machines only have a single bow. Single-bow machines
save up to 36 % energy, which is field
proven (see diagram left).
Annealers
The continuous resistance annealers of the RM
series use the 2-/3-zone annealing principle developed
by NIEHOFF. Normally, after drawing the
copper wires run through a pre-heating zone, the
main annealing zone in which the re-crystallization
process takes place and – after cooling with
a cooling emulsion followed by blowing off of
the moisture – a re-heating zone. Here, the wires
are again heated in order that the remaining
moisture on the wire surface evaporates and the
wire is completely dry when it reaches the takeup.
Wires above a certain diameter, however, carry
enough residual heat inside to evaporate any
remaining coolant from their surface. There is no
need for an additional heating.
NIEHOFF has developed an automatic switching
system for multiwire annealers of the RM series
which activates or deactivates the third annealing
zone according to the current wire diameter.
Wires made of metals with a low electrical and
thermal conductivity are difficult and in practice
often impossible to anneal on the continuous resistance
annealers developed for copper wire. For
such wires the joint venture NBM Niehoff Bühler
GmbH has developed the type RI inductive-conductive
continuous annealers. These annealers
are operating according to the transformer principal.
The primary coil consists of numerous windings,
and the wire runs contact-free along the
center line through these windings, acting as the
”secondary coil“ in the process. If an electric current
is passed through the primary coil a corresponding
electric field is generated in the wire. It
creates a current flow which heats up the wire on
account of its intrinsic resistivity. The energy efficiency
of these annealers, which can be controlled
accurately, is around 80 % to 90 %.
MSM (Detail)
Plating lines
The ”Wire Plating Technology“ (WPT) developed
by Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF together with plant
specialist Steuler Anlagenbau operate with minimal
consumption of energy, water and chemicals.
They satisfy all requirements in terms of homogeneity,
permeability, concentration and adhesion
of the coating. The plating material, which is
added in the form of pellets, is completely used
up. Consistent and stable operating conditions
are ensured thanks to automatic metering of the
chemicals (additives) and the water supply at
high current densities.
Saving electricity within
the company
Motivated by the company’s own employees,
NIEHOFF started analyzing internal processes
with the aid of specialists from an energy agency
several years ago and started work on optimizing
the company’s energy balance. The concept and
the successes achieved so far were even the subject
of a recent TV documentary in Germany on
the subject of energy efficiency in industry.
There are lots of energy consumers in an industrial
enterprise. In the face of rising electricity costs,
it is now important for companies of all types to
look at their internal consumption of electricity.
The greatest effect can be achieved on industrial
ovens/furnaces and electrically driven systems,
e.g. pumps, compressed air systems and refrigeration
systems. Thanks to the introduction of a
number of measures, the consumption of electricity
at the NIEHOFF headquarters has been reduced
by 123,000 kWh between the years 1989
and 1999.
Compressed air supply
Numerous tools operate with compressed air,
which is generated in electric compressors and
supplied via a line network to the consumers. An
ultrasonic unit was used to locate leaks in the
high-pressure lines. Proper sealing ensures that
all of the compressed air generated by the compressors
is actually used. The compressors are activated
and deactivated according to demand, allowing
the entire plant to run at the lowest possible
pressure. The disposable heat generated in
the process is used to heat the assembly hall during
colder parts of the year.
Production and test bench
There are a whole range of electricity consumers
in the area of production as well, such as the electric
drives of the machines used there. With correct
dimensioning of the electric motors and optimized
speed control, the waste of significant
amounts of energy can be avoided. The cooling
lubricant plant which is connected to the test
bench is supplied from two differently sized
pumps, the larger of which is only switched on
during the daytime. When no work is being performed,
only the smaller pump runs to provide
the necessary recirculation of the cooling lubricant,
while the larger pump is switched off.
Lighting, PCs and thermal heat
In order to optimize the lighting conditions in
production and assembly areas, roof windows
have been retrofitted in some halls. In addition,
daylight sensors are used to monitor light intensity,
and fluorescent lamps are automatically
switched on as
required in a staggered pattern.
In areas where the lighting
requirements are lower, automatic lamps are
only switched on as and when required. Dimmable
grid mirror lamps are installed in the offices,
where they control the lighting according to demand
whilst offering a low power consumption.
Energy can also be saved by disconnecting PCs
with a switch from the mains when they are not
in use, instead of leaving them in standby mode
ready for their next use. With around 300 PCs in
use at the NIEHOFF headquarters, the combined
savings add up to quite a significant amount of
money.
Also the consumption of thermal energy for
heating and therefore also the demand for natural
gas has been reduced, for example by an improved
insulation of the buildings and a new
electronic regulating system and hydraulic control
of the heating system. In this way, emissions
of CO 2 – widely regarded as one of the main factors
in global warming – have been reduced by
250,000 kg/year at the company’s headquarters.
This is still more remarkable considering the fact
that hand in hand with the diminution of the CO 2
emissions the production has been increased.
From the year 2004 to the year 2005 the growth
was about 16 % and from 2005 to the year 2006
the growth was about 5 %.
Summary
The machinery and plants from NIEHOFF use efficiently
the energy and help their operators to reduce
costs. NIEHOFF is also working to keep internal
energy supply costs to a minimum.
Being in Dubai
NIEHOFF of Middle East
On 1st of July 2007, Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF officially opened its new
marketing and representative office in Dubai. The office is called NIEHOFF of
Middle East (NME) and headed by Michael Dalal.
the year 2010, leaving behind Western
Europe and the USA. However, as it is assumed
that petroleum resources will
start to run out in the foreseeable future,
these countries are investing in
new areas in order to gain market shares
in other industries and fields of business.
At the start of February 2007, the German
business newspaper ”Handelsblatt“
quoted Jürgen Thumann, the President
of the German industry association BDI,
as saying that “the projects started and
planned in 2006 in the Gulf States alone
have a total value of more than US$ 600
billion.“ All of these projects, which also
attract numerous foreign investors,
mean strong growth for the wire and cable
industry. Some of the products which
are in great demand include building
wire and medium and high voltage cables
for overhead lines in particular.
NIEHOFF, Middle East and NME
NIEHOFF has long maintained good and
close relationships with wire and cable
manufacturers in the countries of the Middle
East. Prior to the foundation of NME,
customer service was provided from the
headquarters in Schwabach, Germany.
Hans-Joachim Melcher, who is responsible
for this area, will retire next year. His successor
is Michael Dalal, who will be working
directly in the office as the Managing
Director of NME. Michael Dalal (44)
worked as a manufacturing engineer for
power cable manufacturer The Okonite
Company between 1988 and 1996, and
joined NIEHOFF in 1996 as a regional sales
manager. Michael Dalal was born in
Lebanon and is highly familiar with the
language and customs of the Arab world.
He is married with three children.
NIEHOFF of Middle East (NME) is responsible
for the following countries:
Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait,
Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Saudi Arabia,
Qatar, Syria, United Arab Emirates and
Yemen. It is also planned for a service
engineer to become part of NME.

Zhenxiong Copper Group Corporation
Rise and expansion
The headquarters and main factory were built in
March 1997 on a site measuring 180,000 m² – an
asset now worth in excess of US$ 12 million. More
than 2000 people are employed at this production
site alone. Today, the group has four factories
in China and one office in the Japanese capital
of Tokyo. A further factory is currently being
built in Thailand (see below). The total production
capacity amounts to 100,000 tons of copper
conductors per year.
Production
The Zhenxiong Copper Group, which was accredited
according to the ISO 9002 quality standard in
February 2003, manufactures copper conductors
primarily in the 0.05 – 0.50 mm diameter range.
The company’s range of products includes bare
copper wire, copper alloy wire, tin-plated, silverplated
and nickel-plated copper wire as well as
stranded wire. The products are mostly used in
the automotive industry, as well as in information,
communication and telecommunication
technology and other electronics applications.
The bulk of the products is sold to domestic companies,
but the export share is growing.
Zhenxiong works together with leading Japanese
companies and supplies international companies
like Nexans, Hitachi Cable and Suzuyo.
The headquarters of the Zhenxiong Copper Group Corporation is located in Kunshan, a city with
one million inhabitants situated in the southeast of the Jiangsu Province near Shanghai. The company
which was founded in October 1996 is now the biggest fine wire copper conductor manufacturer
in mainland China and one of the top 500 leading Chinese private companies.
Corporate culture
Zhenxiong has adapted business processes to
match standard international practices. Production
facilities have been brought right up to date with
modern machinery, and a training center and a
number of leisure facilities for employees have
been built. The holistic concept behind these measures
is described in company brochure with the
guiding principles ”Space Leap, Challenge the Utmost”
& “Stand High (Tall) and See Far, Complete
Sincerity”. The success of these endeavors is reflected
in the leading market position of the company
and its credit rating of AAA, the highest rating
available.
MMH multiwire drawing machine
Ambitious plans
Plans are under way at Zhenxiong for a US$ 300
million investment to build ”Zhenxiong Industrial
Park“ in Huaqiao Town. This will incorporate
an entire process chain – including the processing
of raw materials for copper conductor production,
wire and cable manufacturing and the manufacturing
of products like electronic wiring harnesses.
Jin Zhenrong, President of the Zhenxiong
Copper Group Corporation, wants even more: he
aims to increase copper conductor production to
400,000 tons by 2008, an amount which corresponds
to half of the total production in China.
Zhenxiong is also set to become a globally recog-
world.
Factory project in Thailand
One major step towards this goal is the construction
of a new factory in Thailand. One of the key
project partners is the NIEHOFF Group which will
install a high-speed rod breakdown line in the
new factory with a WPT 400 type inline galvanic
tinning line as well as ten MMH-series multiwire
drawing machines which can produce wires with
a final diameter of down to 0.05 mm. The factory,
which is designed for a capacity of 20,000 tons
per year, will be operational next year and is intended
to serve the markets outside China.
NIEHOFF and Zhenxiong
Maschinenfabrik NIEHOFF, which is supporting its
customers with advanced technology and service
via representative offices in Shanghai and
Singapore, is very proud of its cooperation with
the Zhenxiong Copper Group Corporation. Both
companies aim to help each other to gain more
experience and strengthen their positions as
technology leaders.
Aluminum and
CCA wires for the
automotive industry
In June 2007 the ”Automotive Wiring Components
Forum“ took place in Munich, Germany.
The conference which was organized by the
companies Acome und Tesa, covered issues relating
to the production and use of cables and
wiring harnesses in cars. One trend is to replace
certain copper wires with aluminum or CCA
cables. Under the title ”Aluminum and copper
clad aluminum (CCA) as substitute for copper
automotive wires“, NIEHOFF presented information
about the requirements which need to
be met in the production of aluminum and CCA
wires. A specially developed MMH104 multiwire
drawing machine for aluminum and aluminum
alloys with inline annealer RMA201, as well as
the following stranding on double-twist bunching
machines enable economic production
methods like in the copper wire production.
wire 2008 is nearly here
In just a few months, wire – the biennial key industry
exhibition for the wire and cable industry – will take
place again in Düsseldorf (March 31 – April 4, 2008).
The traditional NIEHOFF stand (10C02) will offer a
larger display area with more exhibits, as well as a
larger area for meetings and entertainment. NIEHOFF
will unveil a new annealing technology and many
other new products.
