While it may have been a bumpy
ride early on, it was smooth
sailing for the Woodstock Lady
Wolverines lacrosse team in
closing out its 2009 campaign.
Charting victories over Allatoona,
17-0, and North Forsyth,
14-4, last week, the Lady Wolverines
head into the offseason with
seven straight wins, finishing a
program best 11-5 overall and
3-2 in Area 7 to place third.
Seven different Woodstock players
scored against Allatoona, led
by Sam Wilkins and Ciara Hilburn
with four goals each. Goalie Taylor
Moody, meanwhile, worked her
second shutout of the season.
Blake Pettway then led the Lady
Wolverines against North Forsyth
with five goals.

Etowah sets stage for run at
Region 5AAAAA crown
Entering the final week of regular
season play, the Class AAAAA
No. 9 state-ranked Etowah Eagles
(15-7) sit atop the Region 5AAAAA
standings at 13-2, after winning
three region bouts last week.
Riding the arm of junior David
Birch (7 innings, 3 H, 0 ER, 10 K,
0 BB), the Eagles topped visiting
South Cobb, 5-2, on April 21, then
handled Cherokee, 10-0, on Friday
and edged East Paulding, 4-2, on
Saturday.
Offensively, Jacob Caffee went
3-for-4 with two stolen bases, and
Nick Singleton, Michael Squires,
James Harris and Robbie Marbach
recorded an RBI each.
Caffee again came up big on Friday,
as the junior center fielder collected
two hits and a pair of RBI.
Squires also drove in two runs, as
did Zach Waters with a two-run
homer. Danny Schmit picked up
the win on the mound, working
2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Denying East Paulding of a
chance to move into a three-way
tie for first in the region, Patrick
Merkling allowed one hit and
struck out nine in five innings for
the win, while Waters hit another
two-run blast and Harris went
2-for-3 with two doubles and
two runs. Birch threw a perfect
seventh, fanning two, for the save.

Creekview in position to
clinch Region 7AAA title
Despite having an 11-game winning
streak snapped, the Class
AAA No. 3 state-ranked Grizzlies
picked up wins in three-of-four
contests last week and to clinch a
state berth and hold a two-game
advantage in the Region 7 stand-

Starting the week against Flowery
Branch, Creekview posted a
5-2 victory on April 20, then, after
dropping a 15-14 slugfest at Lumpkin
County a day later, blasted
Johnson, 15-0, on April 22 and
edged West Forsyth, 5-3, on Friday.
Christian Van Camp (5-0) and
Jakob Nixon each tossed complete
games for victories, while Jon
Husband worked six innings for
the win against West, with Adam
Carraway picking up the save.
Will Garner had three multi-hit
games, including going 3-for-3
with three RBI against Johnson
and belting a grand slam at
Lumpkin. Scott Geary had two
hits and a home run against
Lumpkin, Collins Wold, Garrett
Lovelace and Nixon combined for
six hits, six runs and five RBI
versus Johnson, and Lovelace and
Van Camp accounted for three
RBI against Flowery Branch.

SHS falls to NW Whitfield
Tyler Adams had an RBI double
and Robbie Love hit a game-tying
grand slam in the top of the
seventh, but it was not enough as
Sequoyah dropped a 6-5 decision
at Northwest Whitfield, April 24.

Cherokee wins a pair
Splitting a four-game slate for
the week, the Warriors (8-15)
knocked off North Cobb, 7-1, and
Forsyth Central, 14-11.
Taylor Barnes threw five innings
of one-hit ball to defeat North
Cobb, while Treavor Weatherby
picked up the win on the mound
against Forsyth Central.
Against North Cobb Jake Landry
went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Zack
Brigham was 2-for-3 with a double,
a home run, two runs scored and
two RBI. Tyler Lusk highlighted
the win over the Bulldogs with a
grand slam.

Woodstock recovers
Snapping a six-game skid, the
Wolverines (14-9) knocked off
Harrison, 1-0, and Marietta, 6-2, to
climb back into fourth place in the
Region 5AAAAA standings at 9-6.
Kent Emanuel went the distance
against Harrison, striking out
seven, while Shawn Haley went
3-for-3 with an RBI.
Haley then picked up the win
against Marietta, with Jacob Bruce
getting the save. Taylor Hailey,
Matt Stephens and Ben Schmidt
(two RBI) each had three hits.
