8. GIFTS AND BENEFITS
Elected Members shall not:

(1) seek or accept a bribe or other improper inducement to act in a particular manner in relation to Council
business or Elected Members' functions and duties;
(2) accept any benefit from any person if there may be a real or potential risk of compromise or conflict of
interest relevant to the Elected Members' duties or functions.
(3) solicit or accept any benefit, advantage or promise of future benefit or advantage for themselves or
any person with whom they are closely associated, from any person or body whom they know or could
have reasonably been expected to know, is in, or seeks to be in, any contractual or special
relationship with the Council subject to the exception as set out below.
Note: Subsection (3) shall not apply where the Elected Member has derived or will derive e benefit by virtue of
the Council's support of particular events or functions; where the benefit has been officially entered in the
Registar of Members' Allowances and Benefits, or where the gift has been accepted on behalf of the Council
and has been or will be donated to the Civic Collection.
For the purposes of this Code 'benefits' include:
• hospitality e.g. meals/drinks;
• entertainment;
• airfares and accommodation;
• goods in the form of gifts; tickets.
9. DECISION MAKING
This Council is committed to open and transparent decision making as a primary principle and, in doing so,
views reasonable and informed discussion and debate as an aid to decision making.
Elected Members shall approach decision making with an open mind, taking into account only relevant
considerations arriving at decisions based upon the individual merits of a matter.
At all times, the process of decision making is to be free from actual or perceived bias on behalf of individual
Elected Members and the Council as a whole.
Elected Members shall ensure that where present at a meeting of the Councilor a Committee they vote on
matters arising for decision unless they have a conflict of interest under the Local Government Act 1999 or a
matter of urgency arises.
Elected Members accept that decisions of the Council are binding on the Council and the organisation.
10. LEGAL SUPPORT
In instances where Elected Members in discharging their duties and responsibilities in accordance with the
Local Government Act 1999, require legal advice, such advice will be made available and the Council shall
meet the reasonable cost of such advice and assistance.
