The underground Molok system is practical, hygienic,
and profi table. In the city of Navia (in Asturias),
Spain, Molok containers were installed over ten
years ago, and have been in constant use ever since.
In September 2008 there was a simple change of replacing
the old wood framing with the new aluminum
profi le.
During this Molok facelift, Navia took advantage
of the situation to replace the old lifting bags with
rigid containers featuring double hook systems.
Without hiring outside contactors, and without the
need to seal the containers, the entire process lasted
only as long as the few hours it took to install the
aluminum framing. The result was amazing: the containers
that had been in use for over ten years were
transformed into completely new containers

In the City of Navia all the installed Molok containers
are grouped in sets of three, forming recycling
islands. A 5,000 liter for paper, another one for
plastic, and a 3,000 liter Molok for glass. Great capacity
in the minimum possible public space.
In the photo to the right, we can see containers
that are installed next to a public garden, avoiding
any encroachment of the sidewalk, parking spaces,
or road. Moloks placed in such a way actually en-

courage pedestrians not to litter as they pass by.
Being a system of vertical design, Moloks allow
residues to accumulate underground. This generates
a benefi cial effect, slowing down the fermentation
processes. Additionally, Molok containers repress
odors and discourage insects. The aluminum profi les
allow the containers to blend in with the urban surroundings
and the esthetics of the streets. An island
of several containers of great capacity can thus pass
nearly unnoticed.
