NORWEGIAN HORSE RACE TRACK KEPT TIDY WITH MOLOKS

COMPETITIVENESS
MUST STAY STRONG
During the last few years, many companies
in our line of business have prospered in
growth, and have enjoyed economic success,
as we here at Molok have also done.
Today, though, these times of economic
recession tend to make the years of nonstop
success and growth a distant memory:
a fond memory, however!
Most of us can also remember the recession
in the beginning of 1990’s, which were
hard times for almost everyone. Today, one
should keep in mind that the hardships of
the early 90’s also meant a new beginning
and growth towards the future, which recent
history has confirmed.
The consequences of the international
financial crisis are now obvious all over
the world, but – as history shows – recession
lasts only a moment, then the relentless
push of economic growth continues
on - often even stronger than before.
Here at Molok, regardless of the
world’s economic situation, we have not
altered our investment plans. A new rotation
molding machine has successfully
been introduced into operation, which
makes our manufacturing capacity even
greater.
Despite the recession, we have taken
measures for product development according
to plans, with our latest product
being available for our customers since
May.
MOLOK PRODUCTS HELP KEEP NORWEGIAN
HORSE RACE TRACK TIDY
Thousands of horse race lovers gather almost every
Friday evening at Biri Track, one of the most popular
horse race tracks in Norway. Recently, the race
track changed its waste collection system, replacing
the old surface bins and containers with tidy Molok
Deep Collection containers.
Situated between the capital city Oslo and the
Olympic city Lillehammer, Biri Track is known for a
number of national Norwegian race records. In addition
to weekly races, the track also organizes various
riding schools for horse enthusiasts.
The basic challenge for Biri Track’ s waste collection
system was to keep pace with the crowds on
race days, then blend in with the quieter less crowded
weekday environment.
Therefore, to keep all the visitors to Biri race track
satisfi ed, a large capacity system that takes a minimum
amount of space was crucial.
Overfl ow and unpleasant odors
problematic with surface bins
The overfl ow of garbage, along with the resultant
odor, was the main problem for the race track during
race evenings. Lack of an effective recycling system
was also a major problem.
Once Retura (one of Molok Ltd’s main distributors
in Norway), introduced the Molok Deep Collection
system, the solution to the problem was clear:
Biri Track chose Moloks. In addition to the tidiness,
capacity potential, convenience, and the pleasing
outer profi le of the containers were all crucial in the
decision making.
- The representatives of Biri Track were pleased
with the wide options available for framing. They decided
to purchase the outstanding aluminum framing,
says Sales manager Magne Brennhagen of Retura.
In mid-July 2009, the existing containers and
surface bins were replaced by Moloks, and thanks
to the Deep Collection system’s design fl exibility, a
comprehensive recycling system could then be created
for the race track.
In addition to the ordinary waste, Biri Track now
collects and recycles separately; paper, cardboard,
plastic debris, glass, metal, and bio-waste.
- The customers have been very pleased with
Moloks, which remain tidy and odorless even during
the most crowded race evenings. The pleasant profi
le and outer appearance of the Molok containers is
an added bonus, Magne Brennhagen adds.
Five 5 cubic meter containers and BioMolok
For the entire race track, fi ve 5 cubic metre capacity
Moloks and one BioMolok was suffi cient. Thanks
to the tidiness, the containers could be placed right
where the main visitor masses congregate while they
watch the exciting races.
Altogether fi ve big Molok containers and one BioMolok can handle all waste collecting tasks of
the Biri Track horse race track in Norway.
MOLOK DEEP COLLECTION SYSTEM AS A PART OF
ENVIRONMENTALLY CERTIFICATED OPERATIONS:
ARTILLERY BRIGADE
IS THE WORLD NUMBER ONE
FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES
The artillery brigade in Niinisalo Finland is ranked as
the number one unit of its kind for environmental
protection. Located in the middle of beautiful dry
peat forests, the artillery brigade’s base is a major
military education center, and it now hosts the fi rst
unit in the world accredited with the ISO 14001 environmental
certifi cate. For some time now, the garrison
has handled their waste management with the
Molok Deep Collection system.
The artillery brigade trains thousands of draftees
and reservists per year in artillery, scout, Special
Forces education, and international courses.
Adjacent to the artillery brigade grounds, there is
a test fi ring range, radar station, massive provisioning
center, and two large training areas. Environmental
optimism has been lifted up to be one of the
Brigade’s seven main values.
Riitta Huhtasalo working in the catering department
is a well-accustomed user of Molok Deep Collection
containers. The right waste type slides easily to the
correct container.
4 Deep Collection News 1/2010
“Open minded management decided to invest
in environment”
When visitors enter the Niinisalo base, the fi rst thing
they see is the plain, yet beautiful, dry peat forests
that surround the premises. The broadly situated
buildings, which are barely discernable from the
natural setting, seem to underline the efforts of the
brigade to achieve total environmental integration.
The success of these efforts is underscored by the
fact that the brigade area maintains its role as a major
groundwater source for several nearby towns.
One of the major reasons behind achieving the
environmental certifi cate is the open-minded management,
who accepted the creation of an environmental
pilot system as a challenge. The artillery brigade
has persistently worked on the environmental
issues, says the brigade’s logistics commander, Major
Juha Majala.
In 2007, Artillery Brigade decided to expand the
existing environmental program, to include the ISO
14001-standard as an environmental system guideline.
In a vast risk survey, the challenges of environmental
protection were defi ned. The survey included
the garrison’s waste management, numerous vehicles,
and broadly situated buildings.
One can only imagine the kind of challenges presented
to the garrison staff by the constant environmental
observation, infl ux of yearly draftees, and
constant international visitors.
Molok Deep Collection system reduces the
amount of mixed waste
A major part of the brigade’s new environmental
program was in replacing the small and outdated
600 litre surface bins with Molok Deep Collection
containers. The fi rst containers were installed in the
training area in the beginning of the 1990’s.
Today, most of the brigade’s waste management is
done by Deep Collection. Molok groups are located
at various strategic points throughout the garrison,
with a total of 50 containers now in use.
Due to the Molok Deep Collection’s active re-

cycling system, the amount of
mixed waste has actually decreased
during the last few years.
Molok containers are now used in
collecting glass, metal, cardboard,
paper, and organic waste. In addition,
wooden waste and hazardous
waste are separated from
mixed waste by using pallets, says
Kari Jokisalo, manager of the Construction
Establishment’s local offi
ce in Niinisalo.
The waste that is taken to the
dump site in Kankaanpää is carefully
weighed, with a fee charged
accordingly, thus making a good
incentive for recycling.
The decreasing amount of
mixed waste proves the cost-effectiveness
of Deep Collection
and, since replacing the outdated
surface bins, the emptying intervals
have increased by over 40%,
Kari Jokisalo estimates.
“Functional system”
Logistics commander Juha Majala
thinks that the Molok system is
excellent for recycling and separating
different waste types:
Molok collecting points stay
tidy, reduce odours, and are convenient
to use, which is especially
important due to the huge amount
of new draftees each year. Because
of our international operations,
all recycling instructions are also
printed in English, Majala adds.
In the future, the 15 000 hectare
training area plans to add more
Molok collection points. The ultimate
role that Molok Deep Collection
containers will play in the
vast test fi ring area is now being
planned.
Constant environmental
protection
On September 18, 2009 The Army’s
provisioning department decorated
the artillery brigade with the
ISO 14001 environmental certifi -
cate, which was the fi rst ever certifi
cate of its kind ever awarded to
an army department.
The containers situated next to the living quarters at artillery brigade’s
base are used in collecting paper in addition to mixed waste. The traditional
cannon on the background tells about the base’s branch.
The tidy Molok container groups are situated in various locations through
the garrison. Logistics conmander Juha Maijala, Molok Ltd’s regional sales
manager Kari Kailasto and manager Kari Jokisalo of the Construction Establishment
in Niinisalo checking the containers.
The holder of the certifi cate
is expected to be diligent in all
matters related to environmental
protection, with the annual audit
demanding constant efforts in
this regard. At the moment, the
environmental program is being
updated as a part of operation
plans for 2010.
One major factor in environmental
protection is the refuelling
of army vehicles in such a way that
avoids damages to the sensitive
ground water. Leaks have been
prevented by detailed instructions
and education, but there are now
plans to further reduce leak risks
by building permanent refuelling
stations made out of concrete.
To demonstrate the constant
efforts to improve on even the
smallest details concerning environmental
protection, an experiment
to replace paper towels with
washable cotton towels is now
underway.
The environmental efforts that
are done by the Niinisalo brigade
are acknowledged by garrisons
throughout Finland, and now the
Upinniemi garrison is following in
Niinisalo’s footprints towards environmentally
friendlier operations.
THE MOST PROFITABLE AND
SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION
The underground Molok system is practical, hygienic,
and profi table. In the city of Navia (in Asturias),
Spain, Molok containers were installed over ten
years ago, and have been in constant use ever since.
In September 2008 there was a simple change of replacing
the old wood framing with the new aluminum
profi le.
During this Molok facelift, Navia took advantage
of the situation to replace the old lifting bags with
rigid containers featuring double hook systems.
Without hiring outside contactors, and without the
need to seal the containers, the entire process lasted
only as long as the few hours it took to install the
aluminum framing. The result was amazing: the containers
that had been in use for over ten years were
transformed into completely new containers
The key is the quality and the design of our con-
tainer. For that reason we offer, with all confi dence:
10 years guarantee.
In the City of Navia all the installed Molok containers
are grouped in sets of three, forming recycling
islands. A 5,000 liter for paper, another one for
plastic, and a 3,000 liter Molok for glass. Great capacity
in the minimum possible public space.
In the photo to the right, we can see containers
that are installed next to a public garden, avoiding
any encroachment of the sidewalk, parking spaces,
or road. Moloks placed in such a way actually en-
6 Deep Collection News 1/2010
courage pedestrians not to litter as they pass by.
Being a system of vertical design, Moloks allow
residues to accumulate underground. This generates
a benefi cial effect, slowing down the fermentation
processes. Additionally, Molok containers repress
odors and discourage insects. The aluminum profi les
allow the containers to blend in with the urban surroundings
and the esthetics of the streets. An island
of several containers of great capacity can thus pass
nearly unnoticed.

HIAB STRENGTHENS WASTE
HANDLING SOLUTIONS OFFERING
IN THE ASIA PACIFIC MARKET
Cargotec’s business area Hiab specialised in load handling solutions is developing its environmental
solutions business globally. As a part of strengthening its market leadership in providing
solutions for waste stream management, Hiab has agreed on signifi cant co-operation with
Finnish Molok Ltd, the globally leading provider of Deep Collection systems for waste.
Hiab is now the exclusive sales partner of Molok Ltd’s
Deep Collection systems in the Asia and Pacifi c market.
Molok’s Deep Collection systems form a central
part of Hiab’s environmental solutions offering for
the entire logistic chain for handling waste streams,
from consulting and designing the solution all the
way to providing and maintaining the customer’s
solution. The new agreement expands Hiab’s and
Molok’s existing co-operation in the Asia Pacifi c region.
”Molok is the global leader in providing Deep
Collection systems for waste handling. The company
has a long and extensive international experience
of presence in over 30 countries. The product’s
suitability for different climatic conditions and temperatures
makes it a very interesting global product
for different waste streams and recycling materials”,
states Jukka Loikala, the global Director of Hiab’s Environmental
Solutions.
”Molok’s high level and high quality Deep Collection
containers complement Hiab’s offering with
products that can minimize the environmental hazards,
such as contamination of ground waters, odours
and fauna. On the other hand, all the advantages of
modern waste handling logistics are well attainable:
the cubic volume of waste will be minimized thanks
to gravity forcing the waste to compact itself, the signifi
cantly lower amount of waste collection containers
needed and the minimal time and effort required
for emptying the containers”, Loikala continues. In
addition, the decreasing number of emptying activities
will minimize the waste vehicle traffi c and reduce
carbon monoxide emissions.
The business takes local culture, waste handling
processes and infrastructure into consideration, and
the solutions are tailored to meet the local customers’
needs. Hiab and Molok have implemented several
signifi cant projects in the Asia Pacifi c market
area, such as the waste handling system for the Beijing
Olympics Park in 2008. Additionally, in the Chinese
city of Nanjing, Hiab and Molok carried out an
innovative pilot project, which combined Chinese
model for waste collection and the most modern
waste handling technology into an innovative waste
collection system. The system utilising Molok Deep
Collection containers, waste compactors and waste
handling vehicles lowered the environmental load of
waste streams and attained 30–50 percent savings in
waste handling costs.
DEEP COLLECTION INCREASES POPULARITY IN LAPLAND:
THE ROBUST DEADWOOD
CHALETS IN RUKAN SALONKI
OFFER LUXURY – AND LUXURY
WITH WASTE MANAGEMENT
Thanks to the efforts of Määttä
family business, the last decade
has seen the development of one
of the most luxurious accommodations
in Kuusamo, Eastern
Lapland. Areas of the Ruka forest
have been cleared to make room
for luxurious pine chalets that are
nestled on the shore of the new
man made lake. The Määttä family’s
quest for luxury has also infl uenced
the waste management of
the area, as the obsolete surface
bins have been replaced by Molok
Deep Collection containers.
In the past, we emptied the
surface bins at least three times a
week, and yet we still had problems
with birds and squirrels spreading
garbage to the surroundings. After
the installation of Molok containers,
the squirrels and birds have
behaved themselves, and we still
haven’t had to empty the containers,
even through almost an entire
summer season, tell Eija and Jouni
8 Deep Collection News 1/2010
The robust deadwood chalets and Molok containers match perfectly.
Määttä, the sisters in charge of the
Rukan Salonki Company.
One can only imagine how
many working hours we can save
on emptying drives, as the distance
to the closest dump site is
60 km. The time saved can now be
spent on improvements, rather
than on maintenance, Jouni Määt-
Eija and Jouni Määttä, children of Pentti Määttä, have expanded the
holiday village with their families. Now the village is an amazing holiday
resort where waste management is handled with Molok containers.
tä says.
Six Molok containers are
enough to cover the waste
management of the chalets
There are 14 luxurious pine chalets
in the area, situated in such a way
as to afford each chalet complete
privacy and uninterrupted tranquility
in the heart of scenic Lapland.
The excitement and thrills of
the Ruka skiing center just a few
kilometers away offer a perfect
counterpoint to the peaceful and
scenic tranquility that the chalets
provide.
After seeing Molok Ltd regional
sales manager Juhani Aine’s
demonstration at the Builders exhibition
in Oulu, the Määttä family
decided then and there to start
replacing the existing surface bins
with Molok Deep Collection containers.
The functionality, tidiness, and
durability of the products con-

vinced us immediately. We were
certain that Molok containers were
the best alternative for our high
class, natural, and tranquil resort
village, the Määttä family says.
The surface bins were removed
at the end of June 2009, and simultaneously
four new 5m³ Molok
containers and two 300 liter containers
(for collecting glass and
metal) were installed. The future
aim is to expand the system with
an additional container for collecting
paper.
We are very pleased with the
containers, and so are our customers,
judging from all the positive
feedback. The premises stay
tidy and the emptying traffi c has
decreased, praise Eija and Jouni
Määttä.
Emptying interval: 2-3 months
At the end of August, and after
nearly two months of heavy seasonal
use, we took a peek inside
one of the Molok containers and
discovered that it wasn’t yet full.
We now believe that the emptying
intervals will be about 2 -3
months, sometimes even longer.
Despite the long intervals, no
odors are present, says the Määttä
family.
The company empties the containers
themselves with their own
crane equipped tractor.
Molok containers are
becoming increasingly
popular in Kuusamo
Molok containers are rather popular
in the Finnish Lapland. The
Rukan Salonki resort village has
been a pioneer in the use of Deep
Collection in the Kuusamo area.
During the summer, about twenty
containers have been installed to
row houses, hotels, and at cabin
areas near Kuusamo.
It is obvious that Deep Collection
is the most functional solution
for waste management in
the remote cabin areas due to the
long distances to dump sites, Jouni
Määttä adds.
The dead wood pine- built chalets offer homelike amenities with luxury
High-tech smoke saunas
and ice bar
The Rukan Salonki cabin area has
put a priority on high class living
and peacefulness. The chalets
are built with maximum 60 cm diameter
dead wood pine and are
equipped with all the amenities.
Accommodation is available for
more than 200 visitors.
The initial idea for a cabin resort
area came from Pentti, the
father of the family. Pentti’s children
Eija, Jouni, and Vesa, with
help from their families, built on
Pentti’s dream and have created a
unique and unforgettable experience
for visitors.
Most of the guests consist of
company executives and foreign visitors
from Russia, Germany, France,
the Netherlands, and Japan.
There is a high tech smoke sauna
and hot water tub available for
guests, and during winter months,
an ice built sauna and ice bar are
featured. Restaurant Kultala offers
unique fl avors from Lapland.
New, natural gas -operated molding machine offers
MORE CAPACITY - LESS EMISSIONS
The manufacturing capacity of Molok grew
while emissions reduced signifi cantly when
the new rotation-molding machine was introduced.
The only emission that the new natural
gas-operated molding machine produces is
carbon dioxide.
The addition of the new molding machine
doubles Molok Ltd’s manufacturing capacity.
The machine is used for manufacturing the
main part of the Deep Collection containers,
the well bodies.
“Faster service to customers”
- For customers, the increased capacity means
faster and more fl exible service. With two operating
molding machines, we can now react
faster to changes in the markets, easily adjusting
our manufacturing capacity when necessary,
says the CEO of Molok, Mr. Jukka Blom.
- Another important character of the new
molding machine is its eco friendliness. The
natural gas -operated molding machine makes
Molok’s ecological footprint smaller than before.
This emphasizes Molok’s position as an
environmentally safe product, Blom adds.
The Italian-made molding machine, Polinivil,
is the biggest of its type in Finland. In the new
machine, the mold is rotated inside of a stationary
oven. In the older machine, the entire oven
rotates. With two machine option, the working
shifts of the ovens and crews can be adjusted
and tailored to fi t the demand.
“Melodies are born during night shifts”
In addition to Molding master Harri Helin, there
is also an American born musician Wiley Cousins
operating the new machine.
Wiley has a history as a professional musician
for two decades in Texas, USA. During the
week, he usually had 5 to 6 gigs, all in different
cities. In a large country such as the USA, this
could mean anywhere from 4 to 14 hour drives,
just to play one gig.
The journey from a professional musician in
Texas, to a father in Tampere, to working a shift
at Molok’s molding machine is huge, yet Wiley
seems more than happy with his life today.
- Now is a good time for a break in performing,
as the career of a musician and family are
impossible to combine. First things fi rst (as the
old saying goes), and the number one priority
10 Deep Collection News 1/2010
for me these days is my family.
The well bodies are made in three separate 8
hour shifts per day. Wiley Cousins likes his job,
as he often gets ideas for music during working
shift.
- I write my own music, and during the quiet
hours of night shifts, the rhythm of the molding
machine often gives birth to melodies and
songs, Wiley says.
