Research projects in the Academy are planned<br />
and carried out in 10 scientific fields. 24 scientific<br />
schools have been established to deal with problems<br />
related to protection of people and territories<br />
from natural and man-made disasters.<br />
The scientific research over the past 5 years<br />
resulted in 27 monographs, 975 research papers,<br />
14 compilations of materials from different conferences,<br />
etc.<br />
Over the 2003-2008 period 146 research projects<br />
were realized in the Academy and 6 grants<br />
were received from different organizations to<br />
carry out scientific research and to publish monographs<br />
and manuals.<br />
The Academy offers opportunities and facilities<br />
for pure and applied research and development.<br />
For its inventive activity and innovatory<br />
projects the Academy has received 12 patents and<br />
utility model certificates. A number of inventions<br />
were exhibited at some All-Russian and international<br />
expositions.<br />
The Academy has organized 12 conferences<br />
(including 2 international conferences). It is a<br />
central institution of higher education with an<br />
open competition for the best research work in<br />
natural, technical and humanitarian sciences for<br />
the students of other institutions of higher education<br />
of the Russian Federation in the section No.<br />
32 “Safety in Emergency Situations”.<br />
Educational programs in the Academy comprise<br />
both traditional and active learning techniques<br />
and approaches with up-to-date technical<br />
means and computer technologies.<br />
There are 2 crisis management learning centers<br />
(CSMC), each of which is equipped with<br />
computers with local network access, state-of-the<br />
-art audio and visual teaching aids and equipment,<br />
integrated video conference systems, special<br />
telephone hardware and other means used to<br />
organize control center hotline training activities,<br />
command and staff training and crisis management<br />
simulation exercises for the following specialties:<br />
Civil Defense Command and Staff Tactical<br />
and Operational Strategies, State and Municipal<br />
Management, Protection in Emergency Situation<br />
and Applied Mathematics.<br />
Furthermore, teaching in the Academy is conducted<br />
with the use of special software developed<br />
with the assistance of its own graduate students in<br />
Applied Mathematics.<br />
