screening purposes is not currently authorized.<br />

The division’s procedure to assess fines for violations at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> inspection<br />

has increased <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> enforcement actions. This has resulted in an<br />

overall increase in compliance with <strong>the</strong> greatest increase being observed in<br />

medical facilities. The division will work with <strong>the</strong> regulated community regarding<br />

health issues and expects <strong>the</strong> trend <strong>of</strong> increased compliance to continue.<br />

Following a misadministration or an overexposure at a registered facility, <strong>the</strong><br />

division will continue to attend all Radiation Safety Committee Meetings. These<br />

meetings mandated by a <strong>Department</strong>al Order provide a forum to adequately<br />

address public health concerns and discuss <strong>the</strong> facilities’ radiation safety<br />

procedures.<br />

The chart below shows <strong>the</strong> types <strong>of</strong> facilities regulated by <strong>the</strong> division listed in<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> radiation machine type or purpose and <strong>the</strong> frequency at which <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

inspected. For clarity, please note that <strong>the</strong> words machine and tube are used<br />

interchangeably. (See below).<br />

*Code <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong> Regulations (COMAR) 26.12.03 states that “Radiation Machine”: means a<br />

device that is capable <strong>of</strong> producing radiation. On any radiation producing equipment with more<br />

than one x-ray tube, or o<strong>the</strong>r single point from which radiation may be emitted, each x-ray tube or<br />

radiation emission point is considered a separate radiation machine. “Tube” is defined in<br />

COMAR 26.12.01.01 as an x-ray tube or o<strong>the</strong>r single point from which radiation may be emitted.<br />
