2012 UFE Results<br />
<strong>Manitoba</strong>’s 2,900 CAs <strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong>ir congratulations to <strong>the</strong> prov-<br />
ince’s 87 successful UFE candidates <strong>of</strong> 2012.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> CASB region 1,007 candidates were successful while<br />
across <strong>the</strong> country, 3,076 new CAs will be entering <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>es-<br />
sion. In 2011, <strong>Manitoba</strong> had 76 successful candidates, CASB’s<br />
count was 1,038 and across Canada successful students<br />
numbered 2,858. <strong>The</strong> number <strong>of</strong> successful candidates has<br />
increased this year, along with an increase in <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong> Canadian CA pr<strong>of</strong>ession has reciprocal membership ar-<br />
rangements with a number <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional accounting bodies<br />
around <strong>the</strong> world. Members <strong>of</strong> those bodies, whose standards<br />
have been assessed as substantially equivalent to those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Canadian pr<strong>of</strong>ession, are eligible for admission to membership<br />
in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Manitoba</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> after successfully completing <strong>the</strong> CA<br />
Reciprocity Exam.<br />

Celebrating Success<br />
<strong>Manitoba</strong> CAs and <strong>the</strong>ir guests celebrated <strong>the</strong> dedication and ac-<br />
complishments <strong>of</strong> several <strong>of</strong> our members in November.<br />
<strong>The</strong> 2012 Member Recognition Dinner was held in honour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
new members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 50 Year Club, <strong>the</strong> latest recipients <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Early<br />
Achievement and Community Service Awards, <strong>the</strong> new FCAs, and<br />
this year’s recipient <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lifetime Achievement Award, Charlie<br />
Curtis. Also recognized were recipients <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Queen’s Diamond<br />
Jubilee Medal.<br />

Unification Update<br />
In <strong>Manitoba</strong>...<br />
<strong>Manitoba</strong>’s Transition Steering Committee (TSC), established by CA and<br />
CMA <strong>Manitoba</strong>, is developing a formal merger agreement for <strong>the</strong> two bodies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> TSC has equal representation from both organizations and is working to support <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> CPA pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
education program, develop governance policies and create a detailed transition plan to integrate operations.<br />
Across <strong>the</strong> country...<br />
ICAS and CMA Saskatchewan pursue merger agreement<br />
On December 3, 2012, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chartered</strong> <strong>Accountants</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> Saskatchewan (ICAS) announced to <strong>the</strong>ir members that<br />
<strong>the</strong> ICAS Council has voted unanimously in favour <strong>of</strong> pursuing<br />
a merger agreement with CMA Saskatchewan. In addition, a<br />
Transitional Steering Committee, consisting <strong>of</strong> ICAS and CMA<br />
members, has been formed to oversee <strong>the</strong> merger process in<br />
Saskatchewan.<br />
Alberta CA, CMA and CGA accounting bodies issue announce-<br />
ments<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chartered</strong> <strong>Accountants</strong> <strong>of</strong> Alberta (ICAA) is-<br />
sued an announcement to its members stating that <strong>the</strong> ICAA<br />
Council has chosen to resume discussions with CMA and CGA<br />
Alberta to support unification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accounting pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />
currently taking place across Canada. ICAA will be pursuing<br />
a consultation process with members and o<strong>the</strong>r stakeholders<br />
regarding unification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>ession.<br />
<strong>The</strong> CGA and CMA bodies in Alberta welcomed <strong>the</strong> ICAA<br />
announcement and said that <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ICAA to <strong>the</strong><br />
unification effort in Alberta completes <strong>the</strong> <strong>Chartered</strong> Ac-<br />
countant provincial presence in <strong>the</strong> national merger. CGA and<br />
CMA Alberta will continue to move forward on <strong>the</strong> operational<br />
merger that began formally in October while ICAA completes<br />
<strong>the</strong> consultation process.<br />

CMA Ontario and ICAO issue announcements<br />
CMA Ontario’s board <strong>of</strong> directors issued an announcement<br />
stating CMA Ontario has decided to continue to support<br />
unification <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accounting pr<strong>of</strong>ession currently taking place<br />
across Canada. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chartered</strong> <strong>Accountants</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
Ontario is currently concentrating on transitioning to <strong>the</strong> CPA<br />
and <strong>the</strong> creation <strong>of</strong> CPA Ontario. CMA Ontario anticipates this<br />
process will need to be completed prior to <strong>the</strong> initiation <strong>of</strong> new<br />
efforts to join CPA as a member <strong>of</strong> CPA Ontario.<br />
ICAO welcomed <strong>the</strong> CMA Ontario announcement and said it is<br />
pleased that <strong>the</strong> CMA Ontario Board recognizes that <strong>the</strong> pro-<br />
cess <strong>of</strong> transitioning to CPA Ontario that is currently underway<br />
needs to continue and that CMA Ontario is prepared to wait<br />
until this process is completed prior to initiating new unifica-<br />
tion efforts.<br />
<strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chartered</strong> <strong>Accountants</strong> <strong>of</strong> Bermuda announces<br />
positive vote results<br />
In a communication to members, <strong>The</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chartered</strong><br />
<strong>Accountants</strong> <strong>of</strong> Bermuda (ICAB) reports that at its Special<br />
General Meeting held on December 6, 2012, <strong>the</strong> membership<br />
voted 97% in favour <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bermuda <strong>Institute</strong> joining CPA<br />
Canada and 3% voted for Council to decide. <strong>The</strong> vote con-<br />
sisted <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ICAB members present at <strong>the</strong> meeting along with<br />
<strong>the</strong> proxies received from members overseas.<br />

MNP Crush win volleyball tournament<br />
<strong>The</strong> MNP Crush defeated True North Finance & Accounting in a closely contested final to win <strong>the</strong> PricewaterhouseCoopers Trophy<br />
at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Institute</strong>’s 17 th Annual Volleyball Tournament. True North took <strong>the</strong> first set (25-19) and MNP came back to win <strong>the</strong> next two<br />
sets with scores <strong>of</strong> 25-19 and 16-14.<br />
Eight teams participated in <strong>the</strong> event held at <strong>the</strong> Universi-<br />
té de Saint-Boniface. Thanks to all participants for making<br />
this a great event again this year.<br />

Carol Bellringer appointed to IFAC Board<br />
<strong>Manitoba</strong>’s Auditor General, Carol Bellringer, FCA, was ap-<br />
pointed as a new member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> International Federation <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Accountants</strong> (IFAC) Board. Carol replaces CICA President<br />
and CEO Kevin Dancey, FCA, whose term on <strong>the</strong> IFAC Board<br />
expired this year.<br />
With Carol’s appointment, <strong>the</strong>re are now four pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
accountants from <strong>Manitoba</strong> serving in important roles within<br />
IFAC. Considering our province represents 3-4% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pro-<br />
fessional accountants in <strong>the</strong> country, <strong>Manitoba</strong> is playing an<br />
important role in <strong>the</strong> future direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> accounting pr<strong>of</strong>es-<br />
sion on a global basis.<br />
<strong>Manitoba</strong>’s representatives at <strong>the</strong> international table are:<br />

toba once <strong>the</strong> merger is finalized.<br />
IFAC is <strong>the</strong> global organization for <strong>the</strong> accountancy pr<strong>of</strong>ession, dedicated to serving <strong>the</strong> public interest by streng<strong>the</strong>ning <strong>the</strong> pro-<br />
fession and contributing to <strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> strong international economies. It is comprised <strong>of</strong> 173 members and associates in<br />
129 countries and jurisdictions, representing approximately 2.5 million accountants.<br />
<strong>The</strong> IESBA is an independent standard-setting board that develops <strong>the</strong> Code <strong>of</strong> Ethics for Pr<strong>of</strong>essional <strong>Accountants</strong>. <strong>The</strong> structures<br />
and processes that support <strong>the</strong> operations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IESBA are facilitated by <strong>the</strong> International Federation <strong>of</strong> <strong>Accountants</strong> (IFAC).<br />
<strong>The</strong> PAIB Committee provides leadership and guidance on relevant issues pertaining to pr<strong>of</strong>essional accountants in business and<br />
<strong>the</strong> business environments in which <strong>the</strong>y work.<br />
