2012 UFE Results
Manitoba’s 2,900 CAs offer their congratulations to the prov-
ince’s 87 successful UFE candidates of 2012.
In the CASB region 1,007 candidates were successful while
across the country, 3,076 new CAs will be entering the profes-
sion. In 2011, Manitoba had 76 successful candidates, CASB’s
count was 1,038 and across Canada successful students
numbered 2,858. The number of successful candidates has
increased this year, along with an increase in the number of

Congratulations also to Boniface Mwangi, Certified Public
Accountant (Illinois), on successfully completing the 2012 CA
Reciprocity Examination.
The Canadian CA profession has reciprocal membership ar-
rangements with a number of professional accounting bodies
around the world. Members of those bodies, whose standards
have been assessed as substantially equivalent to those of the
Canadian profession, are eligible for admission to membership
in the Manitoba Institute after successfully completing the CA
Reciprocity Exam.

Celebrating Success
Manitoba CAs and their guests celebrated the dedication and ac-
complishments of several of our members in November.
The 2012 Member Recognition Dinner was held in honour of the
new members of the 50 Year Club, the latest recipients of the Early
Achievement and Community Service Awards, the new FCAs, and
this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Charlie
Curtis. Also recognized were recipients of the Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee Medal.
Help celebrate the successes within the profession by nominating a
friend or colleague for the 2013 Member Recognition Awards. More

Unification Update
In Manitoba...
Manitoba’s Transition Steering Committee (TSC), established by CA and
CMA Manitoba, is developing a formal merger agreement for the two bodies.
The TSC has equal representation from both organizations and is working to support the implementation of the CPA professional
education program, develop governance policies and create a detailed transition plan to integrate operations.
Across the country...
ICAS and CMA Saskatchewan pursue merger agreement
On December 3, 2012, the Institute of Chartered Accountants
of Saskatchewan (ICAS) announced to their members that
the ICAS Council has voted unanimously in favour of pursuing
a merger agreement with CMA Saskatchewan. In addition, a
Transitional Steering Committee, consisting of ICAS and CMA
members, has been formed to oversee the merger process in
Saskatchewan.
Alberta CA, CMA and CGA accounting bodies issue announce-
ments
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA) is-
sued an announcement to its members stating that the ICAA
Council has chosen to resume discussions with CMA and CGA
Alberta to support unification of the accounting profession
currently taking place across Canada. ICAA will be pursuing
a consultation process with members and other stakeholders
regarding unification of the profession.
The CGA and CMA bodies in Alberta welcomed the ICAA
announcement and said that the return of the ICAA to the
unification effort in Alberta completes the Chartered Ac-
countant provincial presence in the national merger. CGA and
CMA Alberta will continue to move forward on the operational
merger that began formally in October while ICAA completes
the consultation process.

CMA Ontario and ICAO issue announcements
CMA Ontario’s board of directors issued an announcement
stating CMA Ontario has decided to continue to support
unification of the accounting profession currently taking place
across Canada. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of
Ontario is currently concentrating on transitioning to the CPA
and the creation of CPA Ontario. CMA Ontario anticipates this
process will need to be completed prior to the initiation of new
efforts to join CPA as a member of CPA Ontario.
ICAO welcomed the CMA Ontario announcement and said it is
pleased that the CMA Ontario Board recognizes that the pro-
cess of transitioning to CPA Ontario that is currently underway
needs to continue and that CMA Ontario is prepared to wait
until this process is completed prior to initiating new unifica-
tion efforts.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bermuda announces
positive vote results
In a communication to members, The Institute of Chartered
Accountants of Bermuda (ICAB) reports that at its Special
General Meeting held on December 6, 2012, the membership
voted 97% in favour of the Bermuda Institute joining CPA
Canada and 3% voted for Council to decide. The vote con-
sisted of the ICAB members present at the meeting along with
the proxies received from members overseas.

MNP Crush win volleyball tournament
The MNP Crush defeated True North Finance & Accounting in a closely contested final to win the PricewaterhouseCoopers Trophy
at the Institute’s 17 th Annual Volleyball Tournament. True North took the first set (25-19) and MNP came back to win the next two
sets with scores of 25-19 and 16-14.

Carol Bellringer appointed to IFAC Board
Manitoba’s Auditor General, Carol Bellringer, FCA, was ap-
pointed as a new member of the International Federation of
Accountants (IFAC) Board. Carol replaces CICA President
and CEO Kevin Dancey, FCA, whose term on the IFAC Board
expired this year.
With Carol’s appointment, there are now four professional
accountants from Manitoba serving in important roles within
IFAC. Considering our province represents 3-4% of the pro-
fessional accountants in the country, Manitoba is playing an
important role in the future direction of the accounting profes-
sion on a global basis.
Manitoba’s representatives at the international table are:
• Carol Bellringer, FCA, IFAC Board
• Steve Vieweg, FCMA, IFAC Board
• Gary Hannaford, FCA, International Ethics Standards
Board for Accountants (IESBA).
• Todd Scaletta, FCMA, IFAC’s Professional Accountants in

Each of these individuals will become a member of CPA Mani-
toba once the merger is finalized.
IFAC is the global organization for the accountancy profession, dedicated to serving the public interest by strengthening the pro-
fession and contributing to the development of strong international economies. It is comprised of 173 members and associates in
129 countries and jurisdictions, representing approximately 2.5 million accountants.
The IESBA is an independent standard-setting board that develops the Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants. The structures
and processes that support the operations of the IESBA are facilitated by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC).
The PAIB Committee provides leadership and guidance on relevant issues pertaining to professional accountants in business and
the business environments in which they work.
